Any regrets in your recent kitchen remodel?
Comments (14)Our kitchen (addition on a 100 year old house) is 10" by 30". We don't have a peninsula and just have an eating area with an oval table at the end of the space furthest from our dining room. Our set up is that on one side we have a long L that is our primary work space. The range is on the short leg of the L, and the sink and lots of counters are on the long end of the L. Across the room we have perhaps another 6 or 7 feet of counters that then merge into a built in with a wall oven combo, a fridge, and a closet (this part opens into the eating area). So, this entire set up ends just about across from the end of the counters on the long L. Our main gripe is that, when we have people over, the passageway between the short leg of the L and the opposite counters can get congested. We did not just want to do a galley between the two walls, and the room size (width) dictated that the passageway is only 30". Wider would have been better, but it would also have meant either no L or else a really teeny short leg on the short leg of the L (ours is just under 6'). This is something I'd definitely think about if I were you. And, I really think a peninsula would only work in a situation similar to mine if the opposite wall did not have any cabinetry. Hope this helps....See MorePainting mavens: I need your help with the living room
Comments (3)I currently have Elephant Tusk in my home along with three other shades on that card including rich cream, desert tan and cork. Why not use rich cream or or desert tan? I have desert tan in my kitchen and I love it. If you use the shades from that card, you're home will blend nicely. Good Luck!...See MoreLiving Room / Dinning Room - I need your help
Comments (16)I think it would be fine to change the sand color to Olive Branch. If it's too much, it might be nice to select a lighter, color and consider making the paneling area above the fireplace this color. I agree the scale of the pictures is too small. I think it would be nice to anchor the dining area with a large painting. The bigger the better to fill some wall space. Right now, the furniture seems to be arbitrarily placed throughout the room so I think you should rethink the floor plan. I would place the sofas on either side of the fireplace. I would move the tv to the small wall and hope that it sits below the wall and doesn't stick out. Right now, it's fighting the natural focal point of the fireplace. Now, the concept of Spanish/ Mediterranean. When you continue this space, think heavy, think furniture. Contrast is important in this style so consider black wrought iron details, perhaps a wrought iron chandelier for over the dining table and some sconces for the living area. It might be nice to consider tapestries for the area. When I suggested a lighter color earlier, it might be appropriate to think a tan or an orangish hue that is found throughout this style....See MoreAny advice on painting this living room/loft with wood beams/accents?
Comments (7)Cool house! Oodles of potential! But you've got a lot going on here with the openness and adding a feature wall colour will not be doing the architecture any favours. I would keep it simple and go with one colour throughout. I would go with a white for the walls and the currently painted trimwork. Let the wood accents be the star of your house. That being said, there are 2 things that bother me in the photos. First, the dining room, why does it have a railing? Looks like a weird adult playpen. I would remove that railing and build wall-to-wall steps on each side of the dining room that go down to the lower levels and that would make your space more open and accessible. The other thing that bothers me is the very traditional furniture and lighting. I couldn't tell by your description if the furniture is yours or the previous owners. I would definitely replace all the lighting with something in a more contemporary style. Your furniture should also be simple lines and more minimal. You have an opportunity to make this a really special house. The architecture is already cool, what you do with it could make it awesomely cool!!...See MoreTaralyn
