Where would you decorate w/ this stove-garden, patio, dining area

I found this stove at a local estate sale several years ago, and since I thought it was special and it was getting very, very low bids, I tried my luck, and won. Everyone looked at me with a 'what is she going to do with that?'. I could picture it in an area of my garden along with a picnic table and other seating. It would probably work to make hot dogs with the grand kids.

Yesterday my DH and I set it up. I brushed it, painted it with flat black grill paint, and then gave it a mist of alum./silver. It is not quite finished, since I need to polish or paint the 'toppie', and finish the back, but the more we look at it, we really like it. I thought about adding faux burning logs or candles. How do you think it would look in the corner between the sliding glass door and the bay window? I feel it goes with the old charm of the drysink.

Another possibility would be on the back covered patio as shown on the dining area photo.

WOW !!! WOW !! That is a great stove. You are a lucky duck!! Have you tried to use it with a fire inside? That requires that you paint it with a special paint to withstand the heat. If it were mine that is what I would do is use it...so pretty. I love it as a patio accessory...and no you don't HAVE to paint it purple but...LOL...how cool it is. c

trailrunner, you gave me a chuckle. The black grill paint I used on the outside will withstand heat to 1200 degrees, not so the mist of silver. It will probably be used as a decorative piece with the exception of maybe those hot dogs, depending on where I will finally place it.

Thank you for your comments and suggestions. I forgot to address the brick tile floor in my opening post. I will be scrubbing it with a grout brush and then either sealing it again, which doesn't really seem to work, or I will check with the person that installed it and see what he suggests. The brick tiles have been installed since 1996. The brick tiles look great every time I wash them, but the grout, not so much. I usually use Murphy's Oil Soap. My DH did not want to go through the upheaval of installing new tile so we need to make them the best they can be. The grout is a charcoal gray, and when seen in person blends with the countertop. We will also be getting a new range hood, and lighting in the kitchen. The drysink seems overly large for the area where it now resides, but that is the only space available. I did not care for it back , and flat against the wall. My DH does not want to angle it any harder because he feels it would stick out at the archway to far. We did try it in the corner between the sliding glass door and the bay window but it looked like a monster hanging over the table. We also took the leaf out of the table which made it square, but neither of us liked that look, and it did not help the 'monster' in the corner. As far as the calender height, I am 5'3", and my DH is 5'10". He tried to strike a happy medium, but it can be lowered if it looks awful. Are the 'twins' to high, also?Is there a 'formula' for placing pictures, decorations etc. on walls? He likes to place them lower than I like, but I guess he is right since that is what you are advising. If I tell him to lower them, he will say. "see, you listen to your HD buddies, but not to me". : ) Thanks again. Jane PS: The drapes were ready made tab tops that I turned in to drapes. Both the tab tops and the valances are from Boscov's where I hope they can get me fabric to match from their distributer. The manufacturer is A.L. Ellis (made in the USA), and the floral pattern is called Glenboro.

Smallhouse: Thank you for the links to your friends new kitchen. I like it! And it is so helpful to see how some ideas have worked out in small space. TBB123: Our upstairs is not too-too convoluted, but we do have a room that was divided in half. Both rooms are useful, but one is a weird shape. If your son ever puts info on his house online, I'd be very curious to snoop into what they've done with it. (I haven't gotten the chance yet, but I will map my other two floors and post the diagrams to this thread.) Brewcat: Happy hunting for renovation ideas. I am going to order a copy of the book you mention. I have read a little bit on rowhouse history, since I live in one and am (barring a massive career shift) setting down roots here. But what I read was not super detailed. I bet the book would be very illuminating. Maybe I could even figure out when our house was built... I have a rough idea but its really rough. Thanks for your observations re: the real estate market. My broad impressions are in line with yours on Fed Hill and Canton. I am uncertain what is true in my own market (Hampden). The market is not, I think, nearly as robust; at least, the home values are not as high as Canton. There has been a noticable uptick in buying and selling since I got here (I bought during the housing crash), and all the sudden people are gutting properties and doing the total overhaul inside that tbb123 and 4kids mentioned. Will the trend continue? It seems very recent, almost like it started last summer. I'm not sure I trust it yet. It does make me feel optimistic about the wisdom of smaller projects, esp if they improve aesthetics. I did try to do a little survey of what was up for sale this spring. A lot of houses have 2 baths, and many of them - not even the totally overhauled homes - have those baths above or below first floor. A lot of people who could use a basement seem to have done so. But it's also not super hard to find places that do have the first floor bath. So if a buyer wants it, she will have a choice of houses, and some will offer it. My suspicion is that, in terms of the market especially, there is wisdom in holding onto the powder room. One reason a person might consider Hampden over some other areas is that you can get a little more space for your money, you may be able to get a little yard, and the prices for the not-totally-overhauled houses is still reasonable. My observation is that this has attracted a lot of couples with babies and toddlers. And that, as some have pointed out, makes the first floor bath an asset. Also, having looked over our house very hard this last weekend, I realize that it might be difficult to find (a lot) more bathroom space on the other floors. So if I have space for a powder room on floor 1, it might be a bad idea to erase it. One advantage of the daylight rowhouse layout is that even if we keep the back partially blocked by the powder room, we could invest in nice windows all along the wall that is not shared with neighbors. It is mostly closed off right now, but it is south-facing and very bright. I suspect it that more windows would really open up and brighten the space.

Yeah, and I also love the kitchen on that one. The thing to keep in mind - they don't come out and say it, but that must be a walk up. Elevators in brownstones are rare and touted. If you look at the photo, you can see the curvilinear balcony off the LR and the windowed DR to the right. That is 5 floors up from street level to carry the groceries to the kitchen. Also, oddly, the floor with the bedrooms is below. So your guests enter on the BR floor and then go up a level. These brownstones are usually carved into 3 units. The bottom unit gets a walkout basement and an entry at street level (under the front stairs). That is usually my fave because you control the little front garden, have a rear courtyard accessible from your own parking spot that accesses an alley, and you don't have to traverse a steep set of uncovered front stairs in winter. The middle unit usually gets the grand entry at the top of the stairs, and one floor above. They have the best floor but the smallest outdoor space, if any; usually a rear balcony. The top floor gets a roof deck but has to walk all those flights. We've been to half dozen open houses looking at these kinds of homes in this area, so we know the drill. It's a tad quirky!

i love the stove and it would be great in the porch to actually warm yourself with in the cool evenings..just remember to put it where the smoke will vent away not get caught under the roof..and smother you.

i really really love it.

when my husband and I got married our first house had a majestic wood stove in the kitchen and a parlor stove with ising glass windows in the living room and we heated entirely with wood..it was beautiful..hard work..but beautiful..i envy your beautiful stove..treasure it..blessings

I think it would look better on the porch, what a great piece, great job with the paint. In the corner of your dr, it would not be seen in it's entirety, although I don't know how high it is.

I totally disagree with Trailrunner. It IS ugly, but you need to send it out here to me here in New Mexico instead of to that stove-chasing Alabama gal ;^P
(LOL!) Jane, it's wonderful and I'm so happy for you! I don't think it would work well in that corner of your dining room. The draperies and the small area there would both work against it. But, outside on your covered patio it would take center stage. Big congrats on your great find! Don't forget to take pics to show us once you've settled it in your perfect place.

harumph....Lynn...get in line !! If Jane hears raised voices of 2 women on her patio...well she'll know who it is LOL. I agree outside as the featured decorative item on the patio and definitely plan to use it. Please do post pics...also it will be easier for me to pick it up if it is outside :) c

That stove is so adorable I can barely stand it! I agree with the others, use it outside and enjoy, enjoy, enjoy!

P.S. doncha just love it when people say what's she gonna do with that thing anyway? That's when you know you've got a real winner!

How about a place on the wonderful patio outside -- BUT within viewing of the kitchen! Perhaps create its own small safe stand with a couple of large basic concrete pavers as a "safety" pad?

Perhaps add a nearby black patio set -- a metal one with green or red cushions for the chairs that would look nice with the kitchen colors? Maybe a bright red umbrella for the table?
