HELP! Losing water in new pool

We had our pool filled today and it is losing quite a bit of water. Call in to the PB but long weekend timing is awful! We are concerned about the quartz plater finish if it gets exposed. It is a dark (black onyx) color if that matters. We trucked in water because we were concerned about draining our well and have been finishing the fill with our hose. The water was right to the edge of the vanishing edge, the pumps/filters are on...then we went out for a couple of hours. When we came home the water was down an inch or two in the main pool, so my husband pumped water from the vanishing edge basin to refill pool...it has gone down again noticeably over the last 2 hours. It did not appear to be leaking until the pumps were turned on. Is it OK to turn off the pumps, or will the standing water be bad for the plaster? Hope someone out there is reading this list tonite!

SAME THING HAPPENED TO US TWO weeks ago on Mother's day weekend!! Our new pool and the filling of water became a stressful situation. Our PB told us to turn off the pool pump until someone could come out on Monday. Our spa had a pipe that was not hooked up and as the water filtered from pool, filter, spa it was leaking out quickly. PB said a couple days of drying was not critical that the plaster would be ok.

We did have plaster issues when all was said and done (it took seven days to identify the problem). Our pool would lose water, the PB would think it was fixed, and then we would drain again over night. Kept going on and on. PB was responsive, however, they were fooled into thinking it was taken care of because there was actually a second problem (seal was not plastered tight in spa around the drains). The finish in the spa was stained and dirty. The PB sent out the plaster guy and he was able to beautify my spa. The first step into the pool is still stained and has a couple small pin holes in the plaster. PB plans to fix it after the original plaster finishing curing. However, our plaster is different then yours (Florida gem).

Hopefully your PB will call back and advise you on what to do over the weekend. If you have a reputable PB, no matter what the current issue and if it affects your finish, they should be able to rectify the situation.

if it did not appear to be leaking until the pool pump was on you may want to check and see if the valve is in backwash mode. (providing you have a DE or Sand filter.

So, our PB has now installed an extruded aluminum strip across the dam wall to give it more height (it adds about 1.5 inches). (I will get a picture as soon as I can - need to be in the pool and lift the cover up). It is set so the cover passes (slightly) above it. Good news is that now the pool has more depth; bad news is that I'm not sure this is a great solution long term (e.g. there are stainless steel screws holding it to the wall, but it is a salt pool). Not particularly happy about it since it would seem to mean that the dam wall is too low. Has anyone seen this done before? Is this a good solution or something that we should be concerned about? Well you got the 1st lesson of pool ownership. 1) Becareful of the "pool store" and what they say. They don't always know what they are talking about. Buy a test kit, learn how your pool is suppose to work. Do your own testing. Post your pool chemical test results here and we can tell you what to buy. Also, if I were you, I would attack one problem at a time. One change can effect other factors without ever having to add the second chemical. And, don't worry, you have NOT ruined your pool. When you mix the chemicals together, it "can" basically make them "ineffective" at doing anything so when you end up adding what you have mixed up, the chemicals do nothing or less than what you bought them for in the first place if they react with themselves. So what you did was waste time and money and probably changed your pool chemistry less or not at all compared to if you had added them to the pool separately. The pool chemical company can sell you a bunch of chemicals to attack meaningless problems and many times they set themselves up for you creating additional problems so you can come back and buy more chemicals. You need to know whats going on and go to the store with one chemical and process in mind to buy and ignore the temptation to ask them anything. ;)

Continuity test on the elements, otherwise wired incorrect as 110 instead of 220. If elements are good and wired correctly (should be a double pole breaker) then possibly bad thermostat either upper or lower. DavidR had good advice. As far as safety concerns. Factory setting is 120, which still doesnt kill everything but they dont set it higher because without mitigation it would burn people. I would recommend a tank booster which allows you to set the temp to 140 on the storage tank, which allows you to really kill anything in the tank, maintain hot water longer during use, and also acts as a mixing valve to prevent scalding. That link has lots of useful info. If the tank booster seems too good to be true, then go with a thermostatic mixing valve on the hot side before distribution to the house instead. Side note: I have mine set to 150 and only achieve about 140, I have plumbed in temperature gauges to the cold, hot premix and hot after mix. Temp readings arent real unless you are running water for a bit, so best to check when doing a load of laundry or someone taking a shower.

Seems like it has stopped losing water at the first step. We turned off pumps/filter over night. PB is sending someone out this am. Hopefully we can get a water truck out here today so we won't drain our well trying to refill!
