Running Out of Time with Sick Kitty

Hello -- I'm grateful for any input. I found my cat in distress a couple of weeks ago (heart racing, labored breathing) and took him to the vet. He was diagnosed with congestive heart failure (he's only eight) and anemia. They were able to get the fluid out of his lungs and his heart rate returned to a more normal pace. He has an enlarged heart (they did x-rays and an ultrasound), and I am keeping him on meds to keep the fluid out of his lungs. He refuses to eat but he drinks a lot of water. He vomited bile on occasion for a few months prior to this diagnosis, which the vet seems to dismiss. I am successful in getting just a little food in him by injecting it into his mouth, but he doesn't want to eat. He's wasting away. The vet is waiting for him to regain his strength before running tests to see what the underlying condition may be. Any thoughts? I am grateful for any help.

Either you misunderstood the vet,
or the vet doesn't realize that the cat isn't getting any nutrition,
or it's time for a new vet.

Nobody can "regain strength" without eating.

I wrote a very specific post, and deleted it because I didn't in any way/shape or form want to look like I was diagnosing or trying to be a vet.....because I'm not. I am versed somewhat in physiology because I was in the human health care field and this is what I'd be doing if my cat were in that situation.

I'd be informing the vet that the cat is drinking excessively and taking in no nutrition. I'd ask specifically if the cat had any renal panels done (blood work for kidney function). Why? Because cats who take in abnormally large amounts of fluid could be sufferenting from several conditions and one of which is renal failue (that's how my geriatric cat presented) and because there is a condition called cardio renal anemia syndrome. It is CHF, anaemia and underlying kidney disease.

I have no clue whether he/she is going the most conservative approach before proceeding, in hopes the animal will snap back. I'm not against that and often my vet does that. But, it's my job to let them know if it's working and keeping him updated. I also try to find out why he's taking a certain approach and what he may suspect if the conservative approach isn't working and what the prognosis is. If this cat has multiple problems, it might be easier on you and the cat to find out up front so you can make good decisions. IOW, I ask a lot of questions and throw out a lot of what ifs. They probably run when they see me coming, but good dialog is very important and owners understand it better than some vets think they do. LOL. I also think a talk with your vet shouldn't be postponed too long if he's doing this poorly. Starving cats, especially heavy cats who suddenly stop eating are at risk for fatty liver syndrome.

camarogirl219, I am so very sorry for your loss. That's a lot of years for you to pack into a single goodbye, I know. My heart aches for you and Daisy, who must be traumatized and disoriented by the loss of her bud. I suspect that the addition of a new feline might be a difficult adjustment for her, but I do think it would be best for her in the long run. I would NOT, however, recommend adopting a male feline UNLESS you find an older adult who is known to be laid back and to live peacefully with other cats. Male kittens and young adults tend to be VERY rowdy, demanding, and rough and relentless in their play. I think that might be completely overwhelming for Daisy. But an older, mellow, well socialized boy might make a wonderful companion for her after the initial adjustment period. A young female kitten might also be a good choice of companion, as they don't tend to be nearly as overwhelming as males. And Daisy might find it easier to accept a young kitten, since she will not see the kitten as either a territorial or physical threat. An adult female probably isn't the best choice, though, as they tend not to bond with other adult females with whom they have not been raised. That's my experience after having integrated many felines of both genders and all ages into my household over the decades. I wish you a peaceful grief and happy future with Daisy et al. Laurie

I'm very sorry for what has happened to your boy. I'm dealing with my third CRF cat now, and I know how overwhelming it can be. Your experience is exactly why I keep dragging my feet to get dental work done on one of my other cats, even though I know he needs it desperately. In case a similar situation should ever arise in your life or for anyone else reading this thread who might be facing dental work in an older cat, there are precautions that can be taken to try to protect the kidneys when dental procedures are performed. My cats enjoy the 'Catch Me if you Can' (Walmart has them). It's a battery operated toy that spins around under a tarp erratically. You have to change the batteries frequently but the toy seems to hold their interest. They sell tunnels that were a big hit for my cats for quite some time until the novelty wore off. They still run do them once and awhile, though. I hooked 2 together so they have a long tunnel to buzz through. They make a crinkly sound when they run through them similar to paper bags which are always a delight. I think that you have to keep experimenting with toys until you find what is a hit with your cat. I have a little box of toys accumulated, some they play with some they could care less about. Anything with real fur is preferred here opposed to synthetic. Only of three cats of mine like catnip toys. I have two Bengals that retrieve but they both have different interests. One loves the real fur mice and these plastic jaks I bought in the kids section at the dollar store. The other one loves balls, mainly those plastic colored balls with the slits. She spends a lot of time knocking them around the kitchen floor. (If you squeeze them, the annoying little bell inside comes out). A window seat or a place for kitty to sit and watch the birds and squirrels helps keeps them occupied, too.

Sorry, I didn't mean to do a post and run. I've had a crazy weekend. My name is Deb, and I've actually been on GW off and on since 1999. I post mostly over on Florida Gardening, Brugmansias, and sometimes on Cactus and Succulents. I write articles...lots and lots of articles. I also have a few blogs that are sadly neglected, so I'm trying to get them back up and running, especially my gardening blog. I'm in my late 50's, have lupus, and of course, love to garden. I live in SW Florida and am soon moving to Gainesville, a whole zone north of me, where I will not have a yard at first. I'm going to try to get into a community garden there, so I can at least grow my veggies and some of my plants. Moving at my age is hard, and I thought I'd never leave here, but circumstances forced me to make a choice, so I'm leaving. This yard is too much for me to take care of anymore. I need a break from all this physical labor, but I know I could not live without gardening, so I'm thinking my African Violets will be my new indoor project. I have two sons, 25 and 37, and they both live in Chicago. No, we aren't from Chicago, the older one was there and the younger one was in Seattle and decided he wanted to be with his brother, so there they are. So far, they are both doing well, just going through the normal trials of life, which they moan to me about just like I moaned to my mother when she was living. I am estranged from my family by choice, so my sons are my only family. I'm happier that way. I'm a Pantheist, which is not Christian, but I do believe in God. I just define him differently. To me, God is nature...all of nature, including humans. I searched for many years to find a spiritual path I could follow, and tried everything but Satanism in the process (but I did read about it and it is very scary...totally based on 'self' and making yourself happy, no matter what the consequence). I settled on Pantheism because it makes sense to me. There is no one and nothing to blame if things go wrong or bad things happen. It is all just part of the cycle of life, and that is hard to accept sometimes, but it makes more sense to me than angels and demons. I do pray, so I will be asking for and giving out many prayers. I agree with calliope, and if it were my cat I'd be asking the vet to do a full blood panel. Loss of apetite, refusing to eat, vomiting bile and drinking excess amounts of water are all symptoms of kidney disease and if he doesnt start eating soon he will not recover but until you get a blood panel done you wont know for sure. If he does have kidney disease he may need fluids then antacids and anti nausea meds and a diet change will get him eating properly again.

I agree that 1) not eating is a serious problem that needs to be addressed ASAP 2) drinking excessively could be diabetes, kidney disease, UTI, or just trying to keep up with the diuretics he's been given for his heart. Either way, kitty needs vet ASAP. Wasting away is no way to go. I'd certainly opt for a second opinion or a vet who cares.

It is very common for cats with CHF and very mild underlying kidney disease to go into full-blown kidney failure once diuretics are started. I've had several do that, and unfortunately there is very little that can be done. The heart can't take excessive fluids, and the kidneys demand them. It would take only a simple blood test to find out if this is your cat's problem. If he is in kidney failure along with heart failure and is not doing well, unfortunately it may be time to let him go. I hope that is not the case and that he recovers. But waiting for diagnostics until a sick cat gets better without treatment isn't logical IMHO.
