Please help me match purples! Long, w/pics

I posted this on the Home Decorating forum; but I need advice from the "home girls", too. Forgive me for being long winded; I have a lot of issues going on in this room. LOL

I'm choosing paint for the sewing room. It's 12x12 with an 8' ceiling. It has one 35x51 north window and one 35x70 east window. They will be dressed with hidden roller blinds and lace panels.

I want to paint the walls pale lavender and the ceiling an even paler yellow. I have a "purple" love seat that will sit in the room. The loveseat is a red-based dark purple. The paint I love best is a pale blue-based lavender.

The other furnishings will include a non-descript sewing table, and antique Pfaff sewing cabinet, a walnut chest-on-chest, one or two book cases.

When the room must function as a guest room for the MIL, I'll put a twin bed in there temporarily. I have a lovely bedding that coordinates with the paint I want to use.

Do I paint the room the color I want, and live with the love seat as is? Do I try to slipcover the loveseat so it coordinates better with the paint? Or, do I use a paint color that is not my "first choice" to blend in with the loveseat? If I do this, the bedding will not coordinate with the paint, but it won't be used more than twice a year, at most.

...Here's the loveseat, in our house on base. During certain times of the day the loveseat looks more brown than purple. This room received a lot of light; the new sewing room does not.

...Here's the paint color, bedding, and a wash stand I may use in the room.

...Walnut chest in old room on base and my craft table.

...Future sewing room in the raw. New windows just in, floor striped. Before major wall cleaning.

Any ideas ladies? I'm not in love with slip covers, but this is "my" parlor and won't get a lot of stress and strain.

I'd use the paint you like. And try the loveseat after it's painted, as is. If you don't like it then use a slip cover. I love the chest.

Caroline...if the pictures are showing a true color...

I see both the wall color and the loveseat color in the table lamp (shade) So if you would get or make some pillows in both colors for the bed I think it would tie it all together...

Plus maybe a pale yellow pillow or maybe a floral one tossed on the love seat.

I love that love seat. And those are the colors I want to use in my bedroom.

Several years ago I took some old hankies and scanned and printed a bunch of them. it only prints out so that you get half the hanky divided corner to corner (catty corner)

The plan (still) is to paint my walls pale yellow and use the hankies I've printed as a border on the wall. I chose hankies with purple and yellow flowers and some blues.

There are a number of ways to make keeping your pond maintenance more efficient without the outrageous price your handyman puts on the job. The first problem of fine leaved Honey Locust leaves could be solved by making a screen sided or mesh sided basket to put into the top section of the pond to collect the leaves. Just leave it in place between cleanings. If you are handy, the screen sided bucket is simple enough but premade mesh fish nets come in some rather large sizes and shaping the handle to serve as a cup type handle is easy enough as is making some sort of shelf to hold the net in place. Just lift the net out by the handle, let the water drain back if it is sufficiently clear and dump the leaves out. I am putting in a link for a website that happens to show several products on the same page that would do a good job of cleaning the mulm under the bottom drain. The fish capture nets are there, too. The Muck Vac is about as simple as it gets. The price is a bit steep but it works. All you need is 50 lbs water pressure in the hose. The leaf vac uses a bag to catch debris and I use one to collect leaves on the bottom. It isn't as good for mulm unless you get the extra bags for that purpose. The price is hard to beat. It adds water to your pond so prepare as for a water change. The Python pond vac is a more elaborate version of the Muck vac designed to collect leaves and mulm. It is more difficult to get into tight places and I have a problem opening and closing the jar that collects the debris because my hands hurt a lot. The pond vacuum on this page is pretty expensive but you can get a garage(utility)vac with a continuous flow(water)discharge for between $75 and $90. It works, too. Just add a hose to run the water to the garden. I got one at Walmart and I've seen them at Lowes, Menards, etc. It took me a while to get the hang of it but Horton came through for me with proper instructions. UV, UV. Hum-mm. I don't see anywhere the flow rate would be low enough to let the UV work. I see you have valves all through the system that makes in-line space at a premium even if it lets you adjust the flow. It seems to me that adding another pipe with a valve to control that flow would make the system complicated to the point of maintenance inefficiency and it would certainly raise the scream level. Maybe I am wrong. Since you are going to move, I would use a small submersible pump and a stand alone UV + filter. It might even be possible to get by with only the sponge included prefilter to protect the pump. The object is to increase dwell time to allow the UV time to work. You can get small fountain pumps for cheap. Try Harbour Freight.I found the UV and filter from Laguna on sale for 45 bucks. several years ago. That screwdriver must be a sign of ingenuity or ineptitude. I don't know which. One of these days you will laugh at it. In a number of stores I see wire shelves that are stackable in the laundry and storage departments. I don't see how deep the hole is but I bet you could find one of those shelves that would fit close enough. You might need to do a bit of bending or cutting. Please do not put stones on the bottom of the pond. It will make cleaning an impossible task and eventually the water will become stinky. Now I will let the smart guys take over. ANOTHER QUESTION ABOUT OTHER BATHS: I've been focusing on the master bath so much that I've neglected the other baths. For the other baths, we will have the same faux porcelain tile on the floor (straight set) and in the tub/shower (straight set). There will be shower curtains so no glass. Same cabinets and countertop as above. I was just going to do the standard 4 inch granite backsplash, but now I'm wondering if I should do something different. BUT I want it to be low maintenance and inexpensive. Keep in mind one of the baths is a kids bath and will have a lot of use. If you want to have two matching stands on each side just get two baby dressers like the third photo. They are 36" like you are looking for. They won't clash with the full size dresser you already have. Oak baby furniture is not as common so you will have to do more Googleing to find them. I would not put a solid black or white painted ones in the space. To harsh with oak. If you want to do a painted piec get one with an oak top to blend it in a bit with the oak you have. I think a deep painted color like the second photo could bring in some pop to the room but NOT with two of them painted the same color. That would be overkill. If you are putting a nightstand in front of the window you should stick with swag valances. Swag valance would look cute on the window by the chair. The comforter looks like it leaves a gap at the bottom and does not hit the siderails. I thought it might be the wrong size. I had to live with a full size comforter on a new queen size bed for a long time until I had the money for a queen size one. I thought maybe you were just using this one until you found the right one for the new bed. One thing to consider when shopping for a queen size comforter is that even though is says 'Queen' on the label it may not be the right dimension for the new deeper mattresses they sell now days. Something to look out for when ordering online or through a catalog. Check the measurements. They can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. Black with oak top dresser nightstands also available:

Oh wow, thank you all SO much for your replies! You are wonderful and have given us lots to consider! remodelfla - You know, we never thought of laminate! Thanks for the suggestion! I took a peek online and there are some pretty cool soapstone looks, but I'm concerned about the seams and the "green" factor (we're trying to make our home as low VOC as possible without going broke). Hmmm... johnliu - My DH likes your vote! That is pretty much exactly what he wants to do - Give it a shot, and scrap it and go with wood if it doesn't turn out right. I had no idea that Ikea was having issues with their wood countertops - we need to look into that (eek). And I completely understand what you mean about granite not fitting a cottage look. Yeah, the more I look at the photos, the more I agree that the dark counters give the nicest contrast. I'm thinking that we should go this route one way or another. ellendi - I would love a matte finish dark granite like Jet Mist. A terrific suggestion, thank you! For a while I had my heart set on Nordic Black granite in an antique finish (which I learned about through this forum). I absolutely love the look and low maintenance, but unfortunately, it seems to be pretty pricey. :( Is there any chance that the Jet Mist would be $30ish a sq ft? I don't want to get my hopes up, but I'll look into it. cleo_2007 - Wow! What a creative idea and gorgeous kitchen (with exactly the look we love)! Thank you!! Staining the wood dark...inexpensive, cottagy and contrast. Verrrry interesting. We will definitely need to explore this idea further! One of my goals for the house is to keep it as low VOC and non toxic as possible. I'll do some research on the India Ink. Waterlox, while awesome, I think is pretty high in VOCs. (My nose has been off the charts sensitive ever since I got preggo with our now 17 month old.) But - maybe there is a low/no VOC food safe Waterlox alternative. ? I'm excited to look into this more. boxerpups - Yes, the India Ink idea is definitely growing on me! I was concerned about the maintenance for the concrete as well. I'm really hoping that I can find a durable yet no VOC alternative to the Waterlox and we just might be in business! I suppose one down side would be that a scratch would reveal the lighter wood underneath, right, and it would probably require at least re-sealing annually? But, granite needs to be resealed, and soapstone oiled (for the dark look) - so I could probably talk DH into that. Very exciting, indeed! I think they look good together. As long as it is reading true on my monitor.
As others have said, you can always put a slip cover on it, if it doesn't work out after you've painted.

I think the different shades of purple will look lovely. And that loveseat is a beauty!...if you can't live with it, I'll be happy to take it off your hands LOL. Truly, once everything is painted and you move the furniture in, you'll be able to get a clearer picture of how it all works. I'd definitely give it some time before deciding on accessories. It's a process, and if you're anything like me, the room will tell you what it needs. You can always blend the different hues by using patchwork pillows, accessories, and window coverings.

I have a purple bedroom, so I know what you are saying about the 2 different purples. I don't really like mixing the violet with the lavender.

I really like the loveseat and the bedspread...so I'd go with the paint color you like and if the color combo really bugs you, then try a slipcover for the loveseat.

I wish I had a loveseat in MY craft room, I could use it as a fainting couch when I'm overcome with bits of thread and complicated instructions on a project! And I love the bold colors of it, even though I lean more towards blue based purples.

Boy, this is hard. Personally, I think the 2 colors of purple don't work that well together. For me, it would be bothersome, but I like things to be pretty matchy-matchy. The only way I see it working is if you find some fabric that has your 2 colors in it and use it for pillows, drapes, etc. Or paint the room a more neutral color, even an aqua blue would work, in my mind.

Maybe if you had a color wheel in front of you, you could pick some complimentary colors more easily. Even a sage green would be lovely.

All that said- it's your room! Your dream sewing room and it should be what you want and you shouldn't have to settle for anything less. Why don't you paint it what you want and sew yourself some simple off-white canvas slipcovers for the cushions and use lengths of it to cover the back and sides, the finished cushions will make it look very classy! Then it is neutral and you can dress it up and down.

I agree with the others,wall color you like (although I wouldn't personally use the yellow with the purple,but that's just me) and if needed use a slipcover on the loveseat.Or.....
as someone mentioned make some throw pillows using the other colors,maybe even some florals or other designs with those colors in them.I personally don't see a problem with the color of the wall and the loveseat.

LilliePad ~ I got the loveseat (It's double-size pull out sleeper.) at Slumberland. It's made by "Dimensions," a secondary branch of La-Z-Boy, I believe. It's very comfortable to sit on, but it's lacking as a "sleeper."

Flamey ~ I like matchy-matchy, too, and there is my problem. I do think I'm going with the lavender paint and I'll work on a slipcover for the loveseat...eventually!

Mrs. Marv ~ You know I'm going to post lots of in-progress photos, ad naseum. LOL

I'm off to the paint store now. Then I'll really be confused. I'm taking a loveseat cushtion, the lamp shade, and my Lilac Vapor paint chips. They'll lock the doors when they see me coming!

I actually think a different wall color would go best with the bedding and the love seat (I love both, by the way). What about doing the ceiling in the lavendar and the walls yellow? That way you can have both colors in there but not as much purple. I think that the bedding kind of disappears against the same color wall. It is so pretty, I would use a paint to hi-light the purples, not make them disappear. I like a yellow or a mint green for the walls.

Have you tried posting on the decorators forum? They are really helpful over there.

Good luck, I'm sure whatever you do will be beautiful. Please post pics when done.

I say paint the room the color you want!

People often say "Oh, it's just paint - you can repaint if you don't like it!" Yes that's true, but it's also a heck of a lot of work.

I think it will look fine with the loveseat, anyway, especially if you make some throw pillows with both the colors in it.

I meant to add- I LOVE that chest! I have one similar and treasure it. And I'm glad your east window is the bigger of the 2. lol It'll help warm up the cool lavendar room. (That's just me living in a dark house talking. I have a lot of north windows, I yearn for more light.) Have fun at the paint store!

watch your paint color at different times of the day

The sunlite,or lack of it will make the room "change"

There is a strong possibility that it is mixed with either red or blue,and those colors will come thru with the change of the daylite

What that means is the "hue" will change...your room will NOT look blue or red,it will take on one of those tones tho.

That will be a BEAUTIFUL ROOM!!!

Can you take pictures or an arm rest cover and the bed spread to the paint store? Or bring home all the color strips and lay them out against the fabrics (all in one pic) and post a picture.
