Please help me match purples! Long, w/pics

I posted this on the Home Decorating forum; but I need advice from the "home girls", too. Forgive me for being long winded; I have a lot of issues going on in this room. LOL

I'm choosing paint for the sewing room. It's 12x12 with an 8' ceiling. It has one 35x51 north window and one 35x70 east window. They will be dressed with hidden roller blinds and lace panels.

I want to paint the walls pale lavender and the ceiling an even paler yellow. I have a "purple" love seat that will sit in the room. The loveseat is a red-based dark purple. The paint I love best is a pale blue-based lavender.

The other furnishings will include a non-descript sewing table, and antique Pfaff sewing cabinet, a walnut chest-on-chest, one or two book cases.

When the room must function as a guest room for the MIL, I'll put a twin bed in there temporarily. I have a lovely bedding that coordinates with the paint I want to use.

Do I paint the room the color I want, and live with the love seat as is? Do I try to slipcover the loveseat so it coordinates better with the paint? Or, do I use a paint color that is not my "first choice" to blend in with the loveseat? If I do this, the bedding will not coordinate with the paint, but it won't be used more than twice a year, at most.

...Here's the loveseat, in our house on base. During certain times of the day the loveseat looks more brown than purple. This room received a lot of light; the new sewing room does not.

...Here's the paint color, bedding, and a wash stand I may use in the room.

...Walnut chest in old room on base and my craft table.

...Future sewing room in the raw. New windows just in, floor striped. Before major wall cleaning.

Any ideas ladies? I'm not in love with slip covers, but this is "my" parlor and won't get a lot of stress and strain.

I'd use the paint you like. And try the loveseat after it's painted, as is. If you don't like it then use a slip cover. I love the chest.

Caroline...if the pictures are showing a true color...

I see both the wall color and the loveseat color in the table lamp (shade) So if you would get or make some pillows in both colors for the bed I think it would tie it all together...

Plus maybe a pale yellow pillow or maybe a floral one tossed on the love seat.

I love that love seat. And those are the colors I want to use in my bedroom.

Several years ago I took some old hankies and scanned and printed a bunch of them. it only prints out so that you get half the hanky divided corner to corner (catty corner)

The plan (still) is to paint my walls pale yellow and use the hankies I've printed as a border on the wall. I chose hankies with purple and yellow flowers and some blues.

Thanks for the info. LindaC - the metal towel hanger on the washstand is not original. I see holes where a wooden dowel once was but it broke off. Sorry I didn't mention that. I was going to drill those out and refit it with a new wooden dowel stained to match. For the washstand I'll take more pics of the casters. I'm guessing 2 may be original, 1 may be a replacement (it looks different). I didn't know that the caster material was a date indicator too - thanks for the info on that! I did pick up a 4th caster at a salvage store so it balances a little better, but it is always falling off - poor thing! Also there appears to be a metal fitting on the bottom of the legs surrounding the hole for the caster. That's how I was able to guess that the dresser had casters too. I'll take a pic of that too. I'm guessing that the key hole plates are original. There are no other nail holes on the piece by the key holes. I agree that structurally the dressers are in very good shape for their age. That maple is so solid! No veneers here! The bottoms of a couple of the drawers are a little cracked but I can work around that by making a pretty drawer liner that is on the thick side. I'll look into repro backplates but right now I want to get them finished off before it gets too cold to work on them outside - right now the weather is amazing! I'll post more pics later today and will also take pics of the mirror. I appreciate all the info! I adore old furniture and enjoy learning about these things. The history this piece has experienced! ANOTHER QUESTION ABOUT OTHER BATHS: I've been focusing on the master bath so much that I've neglected the other baths. For the other baths, we will have the same faux porcelain tile on the floor (straight set) and in the tub/shower (straight set). There will be shower curtains so no glass. Same cabinets and countertop as above. I was just going to do the standard 4 inch granite backsplash, but now I'm wondering if I should do something different. BUT I want it to be low maintenance and inexpensive. Keep in mind one of the baths is a kids bath and will have a lot of use. Lovely home, Nancy. I trust my3dogs' advice on paint for the study and would definitely use the lovely toile as a window seat cushion and as cushion fabric on the chairs. Would a toile valance compete with the transferware.? If so, perhaps a solid blue cornice edged 2 1/2" in the toile. Until the exercise equipment finds another spot, consider a whimsical touch by using the toile on the bike seat cover, a cover for what appears to be the bench pad and as basket liners. All of these can be made from scraps so you're not wasting material. Don't want to put the equipment where you lose the incentive to use it, so have fun with it. In the bath, you can provide DH with his earth tones with a warm stone ranging from Dark Emperador to Light Rosalia countertop. Find a stone which speaks to you before continuing with the paint swatch on the wall. I'd be tempted to use the toile only as accent, perhaps at the top 20% of the shower curtain, perhaps with a matching blue ball fringe, and as the loops on Roman shades, with both curtains in a solid or tone on tone stripe in the toile background color. I too love real lamps in baths, and hope you keep one there even if you add a sconce or cans. Add a real rug if the bath doesn't get abused, and you have an inviting place that both you and your husband will find comfortable. Nearly twenty years ago I had a wonderful red textured paper (vertical ridges so likely your paper gives a similar impression from a distance) in a bath. I'm sure your toile is lovely with red wallpaper although my look was quite contemporary. Four years ago I fell in love with a tone on tone island toile I used in a guest bath in a previous home. Again, a more contemporary twist, but toile is always elegant. It's easy to get stuck if you try to focus on several areas. I understand the importance you may place on keeping a sense of cohesion, but it may be easier to start with the stone, finish the bath, then move on to the study. Trust your instincts as they've already served you beautifully.

Then again, when you post your responses you always make the poster feel as if you are their own private decorator. You don't know how much I appreciate your response, your opinions to my little M.Bdrm dilemma here --Thank you!!! When you say a wide band all the way around, do you mean top and bottom of the panel, also? I will need about 2 inches to have the panels meet (when closed) with a little gather of the rings/fabric at the rod. Would 3 inches of band on each side of the panel be enough, do you think? Or should I go a bit more? But as per your suggestion, solid banding it is--Thank you! Light terracotta for the headboard -- it doesn't matter if the color of the fabric on the headboard is not the color of the coverlet? As long as the color is in the same family, right? What is the general guideline about a tailored bed skirt, same color family but different shade OK? I'm having a heck of a time when it comes to the colors Terracotta/Rust. Everyone has a different hue/shade of the color. Haven't been able to find any two that even come close so far but I'll keep looking for that special pillow I want to make. On the same thought, if I go with the Blue Banding on the panels, what if I have the same trouble finding the exact blue as in the window panel fabric? The blue is not blue-blue but has what seems like a bit of green. Not enough to make it aqua but enough. This is going to be a tuffy. *smile* As for the shams, oh how I would love to make matching shams (I'd have to read up on Welting 101 but I'd do it!) but I don't think I'll have enough fabric----eeeek! Unless I do the panels with a different color at the top and the print 3/4 the rest of the way. But that would bring me back to trying to figure out more color coordinating combos. Why oh why couldn't I have been born with even a tad of decorating gene *grrrrr* As for the dark bark green bed -- I love how it's turning out as long as the room's lights are on or at dusk. With natural light coming in the window each post, each side of each post of the bed takes on a different color---- Another Eeeeek! I'm thinking about adding an antiquing on top of the dark green just to unify the dark bark green color all around. The antiquing would look ok in the turns of the posts, no? Don't mind the temp bedding or stuff on night stands. All temp until I figure out what I'm doing. Colors of Footboard Post and Wall just to left of post are the true colors. So I ask daughters this morning what they thought of the direction I was taking in the bedroom and one said "Mom, looks like you're going for a Bold Mediterranean Mother Earth thing". The other daughter nodded wildly in agreement. *sigh* I haven't seen that style listed in any decor book.

I think they look good together. As long as it is reading true on my monitor.
As others have said, you can always put a slip cover on it, if it doesn't work out after you've painted.

I think the different shades of purple will look lovely. And that loveseat is a beauty!...if you can't live with it, I'll be happy to take it off your hands LOL. Truly, once everything is painted and you move the furniture in, you'll be able to get a clearer picture of how it all works. I'd definitely give it some time before deciding on accessories. It's a process, and if you're anything like me, the room will tell you what it needs. You can always blend the different hues by using patchwork pillows, accessories, and window coverings.
Be sure and post "as you go" pics, too ;o)

I have a purple bedroom, so I know what you are saying about the 2 different purples. I don't really like mixing the violet with the lavender.

I really like the loveseat and the bedspread...so I'd go with the paint color you like and if the color combo really bugs you, then try a slipcover for the loveseat.

I wish I had a loveseat in MY craft room, I could use it as a fainting couch when I'm overcome with bits of thread and complicated instructions on a project! And I love the bold colors of it, even though I lean more towards blue based purples.

Boy, this is hard. Personally, I think the 2 colors of purple don't work that well together. For me, it would be bothersome, but I like things to be pretty matchy-matchy. The only way I see it working is if you find some fabric that has your 2 colors in it and use it for pillows, drapes, etc. Or paint the room a more neutral color, even an aqua blue would work, in my mind.

Maybe if you had a color wheel in front of you, you could pick some complimentary colors more easily. Even a sage green would be lovely.

All that said- it's your room! Your dream sewing room and it should be what you want and you shouldn't have to settle for anything less. Why don't you paint it what you want and sew yourself some simple off-white canvas slipcovers for the cushions and use lengths of it to cover the back and sides, the finished cushions will make it look very classy! Then it is neutral and you can dress it up and down.

I agree with the others,wall color you like (although I wouldn't personally use the yellow with the purple,but that's just me) and if needed use a slipcover on the loveseat.Or.....
as someone mentioned make some throw pillows using the other colors,maybe even some florals or other designs with those colors in them.I personally don't see a problem with the color of the wall and the loveseat.

LilliePad ~ I got the loveseat (It's double-size pull out sleeper.) at Slumberland. It's made by "Dimensions," a secondary branch of La-Z-Boy, I believe. It's very comfortable to sit on, but it's lacking as a "sleeper."

Flamey ~ I like matchy-matchy, too, and there is my problem. I do think I'm going with the lavender paint and I'll work on a slipcover for the loveseat...eventually!

Mrs. Marv ~ You know I'm going to post lots of in-progress photos, ad naseum. LOL

I'm off to the paint store now. Then I'll really be confused. I'm taking a loveseat cushtion, the lamp shade, and my Lilac Vapor paint chips. They'll lock the doors when they see me coming!

I actually think a different wall color would go best with the bedding and the love seat (I love both, by the way). What about doing the ceiling in the lavendar and the walls yellow? That way you can have both colors in there but not as much purple. I think that the bedding kind of disappears against the same color wall. It is so pretty, I would use a paint to hi-light the purples, not make them disappear. I like a yellow or a mint green for the walls.

Have you tried posting on the decorators forum? They are really helpful over there.

Good luck, I'm sure whatever you do will be beautiful. Please post pics when done.

I say paint the room the color you want!

People often say "Oh, it's just paint - you can repaint if you don't like it!" Yes that's true, but it's also a heck of a lot of work.

I think it will look fine with the loveseat, anyway, especially if you make some throw pillows with both the colors in it.

I meant to add- I LOVE that chest! I have one similar and treasure it. And I'm glad your east window is the bigger of the 2. lol It'll help warm up the cool lavendar room. (That's just me living in a dark house talking. I have a lot of north windows, I yearn for more light.) Have fun at the paint store!

watch your paint color at different times of the day

The sunlite,or lack of it will make the room "change"

There is a strong possibility that it is mixed with either red or blue,and those colors will come thru with the change of the daylite

What that means is the "hue" will change...your room will NOT look blue or red,it will take on one of those tones tho.

That will be a BEAUTIFUL ROOM!!!

Can you take pictures or an arm rest cover and the bed spread to the paint store? Or bring home all the color strips and lay them out against the fabrics (all in one pic) and post a picture.
