When did Hobart stop making Kitchen Aid mixers?

I bought my KA in early 1996. It is still working beautifully and I've never had any problems with it. I use it about once a week.

Occasionally, I think about what color and model I would like the new mixer to be, when it's time, but is there any possibility I have a Hobart made mixer? (they're precious!)

Do you know how I can tell?

You can tell if your KA is a Hobart because the name Hobart is on the bottom of the base.

I think that it was in the late 1980's that Hobart stopped making the KA.

"The name KitchenAid was first introduced as a brand name for an electric stand mixer developed by the Hobart Manufacturing Company in 1919. In the early 1900s Hobart had begun producing the first electrically driven machines for grinding food items, including coffee beans, peanuts, and hamburger. However, an antitrust suit filed by appliance manufacturers White Consolidated Industries and Magic Chef delayed the acquisitions for a year. The two companies alleged that Whirlpool's arrangement with Emerson would give them an unfair amount of power in the market, allowing them to take away a substantial amount of business from White and Magic Chef. After an investigation by the Federal Trade Commission, the suit proved unsuccessful, and in February 1986 KitchenAid was acquired by the Whirlpool Corporation."

cotehele - I only use the Zo for mixing/kneading - it replaces what my hands used to do. I used to slowly add the flour into the liquid ingredients, and beat the mixture by-hand using a Danish Dough Whisk, and using as many as 500-700 strokes to develop as much gluten as possible while the dough was in the bowl. This cut down on kneading time and made a finer bread. When making dough by hand, properly mixing the ingredients is an important step people tend to rush through and not do a good job. If a shaggy lump of dough is tossed on the counter for kneading, then there wasn't enough time spent incorporating the flour into the liquid ingredients, and not enough gluten was developed before beginning the kneading. When it comes to using the bread machine, I rarely allow the dough to rise in the bread machine, preferring to use a dough-rising bucket so I can make sure the dough doesn't over-proof. Dough doesn't tell time, and all the rises are according to time on the machines. Dough ACTUALLY rises based on the ambient temperature, humidity, amount of sugar/sweetener in the dough, and the strength of the yeast. A timed rise is just a good (or bad) guess. It's especially important when using 100% whole wheat flour to keep the dough to just UNDER "double" for the rise. Whole wheat doesn't have the extensibility bleached and unbleached flour does, so allowing the dough to rise to double is actually over-proofing it. If I'm not getting a good oven-spring, that means the dough was over-proofed during one or both of the rises and the yeast was spent before it hit the oven - which seems to happen when I leave the dough in the bread machine to rise. When I use the QUICK DOUGH cycle, I can have dough in about 30 minutes. This includes pre-heating, mixing and kneading. There is also an add-in beep (about 25-minutes into the cycle) so you can add raisins, multi-grain cereal, etc. Placing dough in a dough-rising bucket is a perfect little environment for it, normally taking anywhere from 20-45 minutes to rise (depending on the ambient temperature and the type of dough). I may decide to toss it in the refrigerator for a nice long, slow, cool rise to really develop the flavors. It's nice to have options. If using the BASIC DOUGH SETTING, it takes 67-minutes for 2 rises (45-minutes for the first, stir down, and 22-minutes for the second) for a total of 1:50 for the entire cycle. So I save a lot of time there. I can cut that time by 45-minutes to an hour. Not that speed is everything, it's not, unless you are trying to get out several recipes in a 5-hour bake-a-thon. I also never make less than 2 to 2-1/2+ pounds of dough at a time. I can make 2-3 small loaves, or divide the dough for 1 loaf, 6 sticky pecan rolls, and a pan of dinner rolls (or 6 hamburger buns, or 6 hot dog buns) - all from one recipe of dough. I can program my Zo, but I never have (I hate messing with electronics). I generally use the QUICK DOUGH setting - no rising in the bread machine. That's the nice thing about a Zo, you can use it however you like, personalize the cycles to suit your recipes, and use whatever cycle works out best for you. I have a friend who programs hers for specific breads she makes. She sells her breads, so she has using the Zo down to a fine art. Choose to use the dough cycles or bake the loaf in it. Different strokes, different folks. I do an overnight sponge for our "Everyday Bread", so the Quick Dough Cycle is perfect because most of the work was done overnight in the sponge. The flavors developed, the acidic kefir (or buttermilk) provide lactic acid to break down complex starches and irritating tannins in the wholegrain flour, and make the finished loaf easier to digest. Soaking also increases vitamin content and makes all the nutrients in grains more available. The sponge also makes the bread lighter in texture and color and I get a nice high rise not typical to loaves of 100% whole wheat bread when made with a fast mixing method associated with most of today's recipes and methods incorporated when using a bread machine. The Zo X-20 has a Sourdough cycle, but once again, it's timed and I'd never use it for rising the dough. All starters are different. Some are stronger than others, so 120-minutes for a rise may be too long, or not long enough. So for naturally-leavened breads, I use the bread machine for mixing and kneading, but never for the rise. -Grainlady

What a great thread - I have the original white, lift bowl Model K 5A. And I have to confess that many times over the years I've been tempted by the siren call of those glorious cobalt, pistachio and and chrome machines. But I have a strong sentimental attachment to my Kitchen Aid and I still remember the day my husband and I purchased it. While waiting to have the tires changed on our 1971 Plymouth Duster we wandered across the parking lot to a Best Products store. He spied me eyeing the mixer and encouraged me to buy it. I thought it was too extravagant - we were living on one income and he still had 2 more years of med school. But we had been scrimping and watching every penny and DH was working in the lab on weekends so he bought it for me. I still have the receipt, I use it as a bookmark inside my Joy of Cooking. That was 11/20/1976 and I paid $164.89 for it. And it's also the first thing I look for when I check a bridal registry - it's my favorite gift. Maire

On those older KA's, does the Hobart label show, or is it hidden somewhere? Just wondering, since DH goes to lots of estate sales, and one of those older KA's would be a great find if he knows what to look for. As for colors, remember avocado green? It seems to be back. I was looking at the KA's at Macys, and they had a green one that looked just like the old avocado green. I don't know what they call the color now. I didn't take the time to look at it that closely. Who knows, maybe the old "boring" colors will make a comeback. Sally

I wasnÂt going to post to this thread at first because you asked specifically about Kitchen Aids. However, I think you ought to consider the Cuisinart 5.5 quart. CookÂs Illustrated reviewed high end mixers, and among several other mixers, gave the following rankings: Highly Recommended: Cuisinart 5.5 Quart Stand Mixer $349. Recommended: KitchenAid Professional 600 Stand Mixer $399. Recommended with Reservations: KitchenAid Artisan Stand Mixer $249.99. The Cuisinart has an 800 watt motor, the KA Pro has 575 watts and the Artisan has 325 watts. You can read CookÂs Illustrated reasons for their rankings in the link below. A friend of DD works in a high end kitchen shop. They have several different mixers in use in their demo kitchen where they give classes. He said he prefers the KA Artisan for looks, but for performance he would choose the Cuisinart, hands down. My Cuisinart 5.5 is only a few weeks old, but I am very pleased with it. Durn. I had kinda hoped as this one works so good.
I've never had the problems other people seem to have with their mixers. Mine has a lift, btw.

Ann, I made your praline cheesecake w/sauce and it was a big hit. The caramel sauce in particular was especially liked by several family members and me, of course. I made it a few hours ahead and then reheated it right before serving. I poured it on the cheesecake (which didn't look as good as yours) and it had the chicken Kiev effect when I cut into it at the table. Nearly everyone gasped.

I had made the sides a bit too high and the cake sunk- which I filled with caramel. I used a rimmed cake plate.

On another note, I didn't use a bain marie because last time my foil leaked and made the crust soggy. So, I placed a 8" square pan of water in the oven next to the cake...it didn't work. I had several cracks.

Hobart sold the small appliances to Dart & Kraft in 1980 and Whirlpool bought it from Dart & Kraft in 1986. (AFAIK Hobart still makes the commercial units used in bakeries and the like.) I don't know at what point they changed the design significantly (going to plastic gears and such), but as of about 1980 it's not made by Hobart though they could have still made it the same way for a while. The band around the head of the mixer should also say Hobart on a true Hobart-made unit.

Interestingly the initial unit sold weighed 70 pounds and was sold door-to-door by women. How'd you like to grunt a 70# mixer and knock on doors for a living?

I haven't verified it but rumor has it that some of the more expensive lines have gone back to metal gearing. Many people use a KitchenAid as marquee value and don't use it in a heavy duty fashion so they'll last a long time for many. Some use theirs so heavy, and I know people who have burned them out and have gone to other brands.

The Professional 600 is back to all metal gears and has been for a few years. I'm not sure about all of the other models.

I bought my KA on Dec. 20, 1981 and it is a Hobart... and I use it a couple times a week, and more in summer when I need it to makes tomato sauce and juice, etc... It hs been a regular workhorse in our home. I do tons of canning and processing of foods, bread making etc.. so it gets quite a work out. This machine has only been in the shop one time and it was my fault. When we moved here and built our first home here, I didn't use it for about a year...and when I did it made a very strange sound..so off to Nashville I went with it... All that was wrong was that the oil on it;s innards had settled down to the bottom and so the gears didn't have the necessary oil to keep them from grinding together.. the repair guy said that in times of non use of a week or more... just turn the machine on for 2 or 3 minutes and let the oil work through those gears and it should last a life time..

Looks like Dart & Kraft did buy Hobart in 1980, but it was just a parent company and Hobart still used the Hobart name until 1986 when Dart and Kraft unmerged.

Whirlpool bought Hobart's Kitchenaid line shortly afterwards and changed their marketing scheme.

Chief among their reasons were that they thought Americans did not want commercial mixers, they wanted shiny multi-speed gadgets. 'Commercial equipment in general is not intended to look good in the kitchen; it is intended to work reliably for many years in the commercial environment. Americans won't pay for durability and lack of features over looks.' So to them there was no way for a commercial equipment manufacturer to make money on a "prosumer" mixer line.

We bought our KA stand mixer in 1978/79. We had to have the motor rebuilt about 2 years after we got it because DH was making all WW bread and burned out the motor. They use to have repair shops for appliances back then. We got it fixed and it has worked fine with no problems since then. I don't use it for bread anymore and haven't since the 80's when I got my first bread machine. I need to use it more to keep the oil circulating. DH took it apart and found out that the oil settles on the bottom so it can have a smell when you start it up if you don't use it often. Someone said you should just run it a couple of minutes each week to keep it well oiled.
