Recession Lobsters, $3/lb?

The New York Times recently reported that the recession has driven Canadian processing plants out of business. These plants generally buy up extra lobster stock (to sell to chain restaurants) but now there is an excess supply. The article I read said the prices have dropped to $3 a pound in some areas. Has any one noticed a significant difference in lobster prices? It hasn't changed around here, still about $13.00 a lb at the market.

AARGH!!! Where am I when the sales happen!..stuck in Iowa where pork is still expensive...

Fresh Maine lobster are $8.99 a lb. in the local Kroger tank this week, down from $12.99. Thats cheap here, but I didn't buy any. At $3.00 I would stock up!

FOAS, Thanks for the Wiki link. Us coastal Nutmeggers (the state's official nickname is "Nutmeg State" - don't ask, it's a crazy story) all know about the lobster roll's origination but keep our mouths shut to avoid conflict with Mainers. We just happily eat our lobster rolls dripping in melted butter and try to keep them a secret. lol I had no idea about Amagansett but am not surprised considering its location. I love the eastern end of LI! It's frustratingly close. I can see it but it takes our Nordic Tug about 1-1/2-2 hrs to chug over to Orient Point. Just as well. Sag Harbor, Montauk, etc. would bankrupt us quickly. :) This discussion of lobster rolls has decided our July 4 menu - lobster rolls, CT-style. Sides still to be decided. :) Check out Abbott's Lobster in the Rough's website. It's a fun place. Very common for locals to bring along white tablecloths, candelabras, sterling flatware, the good china, and crystal wine glass in a picnic basket and set up for an Abbott's lobster roll dinner on the picnic tables to watch the boats going thru Mystic channel. Everybody in shorts, tees, and flip flops, of course. Abbott's was voted by About.com, in 2012, as the best place to eat a lobster in New England. Bobby Flay is a frequent visitor also. FOAS, I've never halved the recipe, but I bet it would still be great, obviously baked in a smaller dish & deducting a little baking time so it doesn't dry out. When it's bubbly and just slightly brown on top, it's done. My DS & his fiancee are arriving from Denmark on Friday to spend a week w/ us. Lobster is at the top of his list of "must have" foods while he's here. Don't think the $3.99 price will hold, but hope it stays low for just a while longer. For all the folks in other regions who don't get reasonable prices/access to fresh lobster, I can relate. Whenever I read a post that asks, "What can I do with all these mangoes, cherries...or lemons from my tree... ?" I am equally envious. We've all got something special!

This always works for a celebration dinner. ROASTED SURF 'N' TURF 2 lobster tails 1/2 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. seafood seasoning 1 (3 lb.) whole beef tenderloin 1 Tbs. melted butter or margarine 1 1/2 tsp. lemon juice 6 slices bacon 1/4 cup finely chopped shallots 1/4 cup finely chopped green onions (scallions) 1 clove garlic, finely minced 1/2 lb. Mushrooms, thinly sliced 1/2 cup butter 1/2 cup dry white wine 1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce (optional) or 1 tsp. chopped fresh or 1/4 tsp. dried tarragon (optional) Place lobster tails, salt and seafood seasoning in a medium saucepan and cover with water. Bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer 5 minutes. Remove from water and drain. Let cool until able to be handled. Carefully remove lobster tails from shells, keeping meat in one piece. Cut each piece of lobster meat in half lengthwise and set aside. Cut a horizontal pocket through the center of meat to within 1/2 inch of opposite side of tenderloin, slicing the entire length of tenderloin. Carefully stuff lobster pieces, end to end, inside tenderloin. Combine the 1 Tbs. melted butter and lemon juice; Drizzle on lobster. Fold over tenderloin to resemble original shape and tie with butcher's twine. Set aside. Cook bacon in a skillet until slightly crisp; drain, reserving drippings. Crumble bacon; set aside. Put beef in shallow pan and brush entire surface of meat with bacon drippings. Insert meat thermometer in center of roast so the point is right below the lobster, making sure it doesn't go all the way through and touch the pan. Bake at 400 degrees for approx. 25 minutes or until thermometer registers 130 degrees (rare). While roast is cooking, saute shallots, green onions, garlic and mushrooms in 1/2 cup butter. Add wine and Worcestershire sauce or tarragon (but not both). Simmer until roast is ready. To serve, remove twine and sprinkle top of meat with crumbled bacon. Serve sauce with sliced tenderloin. Note: The roast can be stuffed earlier in the day and refrigerated (uncooked). Add a few minutes more cooking time if made ahead. The sauce can also be made ahead and reheated.

Good grief, everything sounds incredible! Robert wants the whole lobster 'experience ', so there are two live lobsters in the fridge as we speak! I am going to do the twice baked potatoes (sour cream, butter, chives, bacon crumbles, cheese), angel biscuits with lemon butter, roasted brussels sprouts (yes to olive oil and balsamic). I'll make a couple sushi rolls for appetizers, the rice is cooling now. Then, I'll bake the potatoes for the first time, then fix them up for the second baking....maybe with the yeasty biscuits. Then the lobsters, and lastly, the sprouts. Sound like a plan? I bought him a pretty cupcake to top it off. :-) I really appreciate all of the ideas. I'd fix some of those creamy dishes in a heartbeat if it were for me! Luckily, I have the appropriate utensils for cracking and opening.

My daughter lives in CT and has seen lobster prices drop to $2.50 and says now they're back up to $5.00. Her paper is running a story on it right now.

When I was in MA a couple months ago, I saw lobster for $3/lb at several roadside lobster shacks (mind you, this was right on the coast, so it was probably as cheap as it ever gets). I was tempted to bring home a big box for my mom, but I'm not that big on lobster myself so it held little appeal.

$3 lb. here would be unheard of. The last I checked it's about $14 lb.

Lobster is only a dream to me, as is any kind of fresh seafood. That's what happens when you live in the middle of the continent, especially when the Artic Ocean is as close as is the Atlantic one!

Oh well, we do have very good beef here.

Our Wegmans grocery store and one other has been having specials of cold water USA caught live lobsters for $6.99/lb. When Wegman's has that special, they also sell the cooked tails and claws for $10.99/lb. That's where my DH got the lobster in another thread I posted.

I live 10 steps from the Atlantic Ocean and they're 9.99 a lb here when they're in season...right now they are 14.99 a lb.
At 2.99 I would buy a ton and can them.

I have to make a trip to the grocery store this morning, and you can bet your sweet bippy I am going to check and see what lobster is selling for! LOL

Anyhting less than $19 per lb here in MN is considered a bargain!

I just phoned my fishmonger & lobsters are $3.99/lb. here in Mystic for under 1.25 lbs. Over, and they're $4.25/lb.

I usually get lobster for free since a friend at our marina has a few non-commercial traps. I just wait until he has some extra that he drops off at the house.

At these prices though...heck, it's as cheap as chicken. Hardly worth the effort, time, & expense of trapping. (license, boat, traps, fuel, maintenance, & risk of accident on the water)

Looks like a good time to put lobster ravs, bisque, appetizers, etc. in the freezer.

Lobsters here were on sale for $4.99/lb. a few weeks ago. I bought 2 and they were so good, a few days later I went back and got 2 more. It's a wonder we don't have gout!

DH wanted more (he's a lobster fanatic) - went back AGAIN, but they were out of them - DH has a rain check for four in his Christmas stocking.

And a gallon of lobster stock in the freezer - yummy stuff!

If I buy several and cook them, does the meat freeze well? Should I freeeze it picked or in the shell?

mudlady, I've never frozen lobster in the shell, but it freezes Ok cooked and "picked". Not that I ever have any leftover to freeze.

OK, I'm looking for lobster this weekend!

If lobsters go that low, I am dumping freezer meats and re-stocking. Heading for the market in the morning...
