Although I love color, I hate painting. So I leave my furniture and walls in neutrals and change out drapes, pillows, rugs and wall art. This gives me the flexibility to change more often, i.e, for each season or holiday.

If you are absolutely set on painting, your furniture is neutral enough to go with anything. Your sage choice goes well with quite a few other colors so you could accessorize a number of ways with paint in that tone.

I love so many elements you have going on in that room, but something is lacking to me; it's like you just moved in and haven't decided how to make the space your own yet. Why not add some art to the walls flanking the fireplace, maybe a colorful jar or vase of twigs on the floor, some accent pillows or a throw, a valance...

I love neutral green walls, too, but painting is such a mess, and I think your room could benefit from a wee bit of accessorizing. Of course, too many accessories become clutter, but a few add character. (Can you tell I'm waging a personal battle between clutter-free minimalism and homey accessories? LOL)

I actually love the color as is! Maybe just some art or other wall decor would jazz it up?

I like the color too. In addition to some art and colorful accessories, maybe bring in some color/texture with some window treatments?

I think the paint is too matchy to your sofa; a different paint color would add something to the room. Right now it looks a little formulaic Sage could be lovely; does the rug have sage in it?

andreadeg- I think that is what is bothering me the most (the walls matching the couch)! Here is a close-up of the rug. It has a light green in it as well as a blue. I don't really want to paint the walls blue and that is why I was leaning towards a green.

Maybe put a sofa table with lamps behind your sofa, some drapes and lively pillows would help you like it better.
Is your rug new? if your willing to change it maybe somehting more transitional looking. Once you have coffee table w/accessories that may help too.

The paint color is Sisal. It was an ICI paint color but was matched to Glidden. Getting a side table & coffee table are on my list for sure!

I think that no matter what colour you paint your walls I'm not sure you'll be happy. As others have mentioned there is no colour in the middle of the room. If you paint the walls the same problem will persist. My suggestion would be to take some colours from your rug and use them for throw cushions - use a solid colour from the rug for one of them and then a strip or small floral with other colours for one or more of the others. Get some artwork with the rug colours in it for the walls. If you like the green, concentrate on the green for your accessories.

What about adding a lamp to the table between your couch and leather seat or a floor lamp behind the leather seat.

YOu also have to decide - do you want colour or do you want to stay neutral and add interest through texture. If you want texture add pillows that are pleated, add a tall sparkley or pottery vase at the base of the fireplace with tall grasses in it (you could do that anyway).

You basically have a beautiful blank canvas with which to work and everything is flowing together right now. I would continue to use the current colour as part of that canvas and add interest into the middle of the room. My 2c.

You could try adding curtains, and I would make them substantial, so that there is visual separation between the wall color and the sofa.

To me the colors just look a little too safe. Neutral walls, neutral sofa , neutral tile, all in the same intensity, dark chair, dark wood. There is no surprise in the room. Everything looks clean and right, but not lively. I don't mean this as a criticism, IMO this is a common problem with neutral rooms, they are a little too perfect. But in the interest of full disclosure I'm NOT a neutral girl. I like color...can't live without color. to me, yellow, peach and green are neutrals! HA!

I too am not sure that painting your walls sage is going to help. I'm seeing red curtains...picking up the color in your rug to bring some life into the room.

Once you get that in place, how about a coffee table, and then something unexpected somewhere in the room. I don't know what...I'm thinking about it....maybe some photos with a wee bit of red matting on either side of the fireplace?

Crown moulding would add a lovely touch...

I also love your paint color. I think once you get your tables, you can add some more things--accessories, some lamps, window treatments, some new throw pillows to add some texture/color, maybe an interesting painting above the fireplace to bring in some other colors. I think it's going to come together nicely over time.

Oh my gosh, you're room looks a lot like mine. Exact same color couches, walls, etc. This might sound crazy, but paint the one wall, just the fireplace wall, Benjamin Moore Montpelier. It's a gorgeous, rich blue/gray and it will make the room pop. The white fireplace will look amazing! I"m serious. I just painted on Friday and my husband and I just stood there saying "why didn't we do this years ago?!" It will pull the blue from your rug too. Then just buy a few decorative blue glass vases, candles, a few pillows and a throw w/blue in it -- maybe some mercury glass and you'll never want to leave the room. Promise! Good luck. :)

It's a lovely room and I really like the paint and the white trim. I don't think it's going to take much to give you the warmth you're looking for. A large coffee table (I'd go for glass top with dark metal) will really add to your space, since it will give you a spot on which to bring some textures and colors into the center of the room, as well as a spot to set your coffee mug or wine glass!

I'd look for some throw pillows with lots of white or cream (to be bright and light against the sofas) with touches of colors. I don't think the colors need to be exact matches to your rug. Pottery Barn type pillows could be really pretty and bring some life to the space. Many of these could work with your colors. Take a look at the Anna Marie Bird and the Spring Flower Embroidered pillows and the way they mix them (in additional images viewable when you click on each pillow) with other patterns. Might you like something like this look? They are expensive, but there's a 15% off sale for another day or so. Of course you could find a similar look elsewhere (TJ Maxx, Target?).

Now that I've suggested this for you, I'm going back to see whether I want to splurge on some of the pillows for my own living room. Have to say I love those nature themes and the freshness they bring! I also love the Suzani embroidered pillow. Hmmm.

I realize I should have linked to all the Pottery Barn Pillows, not just patterned. Some of the solid textured linens could be great in your room in combination with a couple of patterned onces. There are other patterned options that would be great, too, including Eloise, Suzie....

Thank you for all of the suggestions! I am definitely going to look around for side table/coffee table. I don't think I can get a glass one (I have 3 young boys)! I LOVE all of the tables in PB mag but just have not wanted to spend the $$.
Brandysmom- I think the color you mentioned is what I painted my sons room... Does it look like this color?

I looked at PB pillows yesterday but I had my 7yr old with me & couldn't concentrate. I might go back today. Could a slate color curtain look good? I am really horrible at this decorating stuff! I know I keep everything "safe". Bold colors scare me (except when it comes to my boys bedrooms). That is my oldest sons room above, I painted my middle sons room an awesome gray and my youngest sons walls Navy and it looks gorgeous! The boys bathroom is a dark lime green! I just don't know why I am afraid of color everywhere else.

Yes! It looks very similar. How funny! Do you have any leftover? Honestly, I've been afraid of definite color, like you, too. I finally had enough of the beige and neutrals everywhere, so I went for it and loved it. Funny, now I want to repaint the entire downstairs in real, actual colors! LOL! My "plan B" (if I didn't like the blue) was to paint the far wall a much deeper shade of the other 3 walls. Just to add something. But again, HUGE fan of how the blue turned out. Color is such a personal thing...but I would much rather see you pull a red or green from that rug than the blue. Right now you have a warm space, and blue (IMHO) would make it colder, or more possibly more formal.

However...I reserve the right to change my mind if Christy shares pictures. ;)
