And it's New Year's Eve! I wonder what everyone is doing? Happy New Year!!! And Happy Friday! Raising my glass of icy milk (been in the mood for it lately)!

Clinking with iced green tea!!

No plans for me except WORK!!!

I have to work til 10 and a neighbor invited us over but truth be told this job really wears me out so I will most likely pop oen a miller chill, get into my jammies and watch the ball drop under the blankets LOL!!
However it is right acrossed the street so maybe just maybe I will go.

Tomorrow starts the Deconstruction of Christmas here in casa Fardone...lots of stuff to pack away till next year.

I am going to eat smarter in the new year however I am giving myself till Monday to finish all the sweets and treats. Tuesday is trash day here so whatever is left is getting chucked!!

I for one will be so glad to see 2010 go. Honestly its been a year from hell!
I lost my job, my Mom, my dog and several good friends but 2011 promises to be a good one with a double graduation, a new fun job with lots of new friends and oh yeah....POOL PARTIES!!!!
Not to mention a few new fur babies to snuggle with!!

I would like to resolve to trying to have more get togethers!!
Anyone traveling to Philly or thru Philly plz look me up!!

So Happy New Year to everyone and please make it a safe one!!

Elery will be here tonight about 5 pm and my mother will be here any minute so I can load her pictures onto the computer and send them in to be developed. I created a monster when I bought her that digital camera, I swear! I have a batch of vegetable soup in my new 6 quart Nesco made with some of that leftover prime rib and bread rising on the stove.

Elery's birthday is Sunday, so I'll make him dinner then, and tomorrow we'll go to the farm and do the chores there.

Nothing planned for tonight at all, I doubt we'll even stay up long enough to watch the ball drop!

I have the day off, because New Year's Day falls on Saturday, so I'm home and clinking with my second (or is it my third?) cup of coffee.

Still guessing, but I try to add some more things to do. Do you hear anything when you crank it with the plugs out?? does it hesitate or have a hitch in the rotation when you have the plugs out?? Any hitch or hesitation will be mulitiplied with the plugs in especially if you hear any noise. things I would look for. Remove the starter and look at the bendix teeth, look at the flywheel teeth. Do a compression check (compression should be atleast around 100 PSI). this will tell you that the valve seat and valves are sealing and closing, Doing one cylinder at a time may also narrow the problem down to one or the other if the engine stops rotating when checking compression which may lead to a connecting rod problem. If you got good compression and the engine spins with plugs out and no unusual noises or hesitations and the drive belt and elect pto clutch aren't binding. Then I would suspect the starter, usually starters last quite awhile, but unless your are an electronic's expert your guessing. Starter is a high dollar item unless you find a used one or one on ebay for at least 1/2 price. Before I replace the starter I would go ove the battery cables again checking for any corossion (on the cables internally) and points of contact I would also jump across the starter solonoid to illimate that. I'm out of guesses or procedures unless you come up with something else. If it was me I would try another starter before I tore into the engine unless I found some evidents of a rotating part problem. I not that familar with V-twin Kohlers, but it still should have valve covers (usually the cover can be reinstalled using the old gasket unless you tear if when removing it) which you can remove and watch the valve action when cranking the engine with the plugs out if you have no compression in one cylinder, if you have good compression (in both cylinders) and no noises then the rotating internal part could be ilimated. I know another tool you probably haven't got, but you really have to have basic tools multi-meter, compression kit, vacuum gauge to have a chance to narrow some problems down.

After having been an apartment maintenance supervisor for more than 20 years i never thought i would ever offer this advice to a tenant, but here goes. Believe it or not, one of the biggest gripes amongst landlords is the fact that the courts usually favor the tenants. The reason most tenants have a hard time is because they don't know their legal rights. Once you have entered into a lease, both parties, landlord and tenant are bound to the provisions of that lease. In effect, you are required to pay your rent on time and live within certain limitations concerning noise, pets, number of people in the dwelling, no alterations to the structure, etc, etc. In turn, the landlord is obligated by law to keep the dwelling up to all applicable building and health code standards and to maintain the dwelling in the condition it was in at the time the lease was instituted. By example, in many cases the need to supply air conditioning is legally determined by the climatic zone where you live. In some northern states AC is an option, whereas on the Gulf Coast it is considered essential. However, even if it is an option in your climatic region, if it was there, and if it was working when you signed the lease, the landlord is legally obligated to maintain it. The question now becomes, how do you bring pressure to bear upon a landlord to fulfill his end of the lease? God knows, the landlord will use all the legal powers at his command to get his money and insure you live up to the lease, now it is your turn, but be real careful here. Legally there is a right and a wrong way to go. We all know that if you withhold the rent he will have an eviction notice on your door in three for four days, right? WRONG. there is a legal way to withhold rent until the services are rendered. Begin by serving the landlord a written work order for the repairs that need to be made, and allow them a reasonable period of time to effect repairs. This is a touchy point, what is reasonable? The court will determine that it is reasonable to expect the landlord to at least contact you and inspect the damage with 3 days. And the landlord should be able to give you an approximate date as to when to expect the work to be done. Usually not more than 7 days. I would make a point of serving the work order request to the landlord by letter, keeping a copy of the letter for your records and also have a witness to confirm you gave the landlord the letter, or better yet, mail it to the landlord by certified mail, return receipt. That would establish in court that your made the request. If the work is not performed by the next time your rent is due, go to your local housing court, file a complaint, and pay your rent to the court. The court will hold the money in escrow and serve the landlord a notice to appear in court. You must also send a note to the landlord stating that the service has not been performed in a timely manner, therefor your have posted your rent on deposit with the court. You may rest assured that you now have the landlords full attention because the last thing most landlords want it to face a judge and explain why they dont do their job. The courts know only too well that landlords dont hesitate to use the powers of the court when it suits them, and it is so seldom that a tenant actually goes through the proper channels the courts generally feel it is payback time. It is within the juridiction of the court to have the dwelling inspected ( something most landlords do not want) and if the inspector were to determine the dwelling untenable, the court can actually direct the tenant into a motel at the landlords expense until the repairs are made. Many tenants are afraid to take these steps for fear that the landlord would take the corrective action, then immediately find other grounds for evicition, but the laws are specific. If it could be shown that the landlord sought eviction in retaliation, the landlord could be held legally responsible for all relocation costs, and if you were to move and had to pay a higher rent, the court could direct you pay the amount on your lease for the remaining portion of the lease period with the first landlord, and the landlord would have to pay the balance each month.

Hello all How nice to have advice, I tell ya, My kids are grown, and I am really rusty at this stuff. I have got so much comfort from this help. To Sweeby, I can't get away with nothin, lol very observant of you. Thank you for the time you have taken here. And, I am starting to believe that, yes there is something a bit off, when a child is told the permission has to be recieved for the computer, but only for supervision, not to say no, and 5 minutes later, she sneaks again, and we have another talk, and the next 5 days are all the same. That is just amazing. The places she goes are all pg healthy disney type sites, so that's not the incentive. I have to say I am wondering if just being defiant isn't the jolly she is looking for. And if you look at just this disobediance, and not the rest maybe its normal, but I would have never pushed an adult several times a day, day after day, and it's important to point out, I am NOT a comfortable auntie she has known all her life, I am a new person in her life. That concerns me because of the problems she will have if she is like this with teachers and other parents. And it appears she is. So I think , like you probably do,Two or three talks is alot, but maybe normal. This was was 9 or 10, To put me in a place to do that, must have been some of the power she was after, I just don't know, but It will never happen again. Trying not to rock the boat, left my about to sink the ship i think. Don't laugh, but I honestly believe she purposely didn't let the dog out so I would have to clean the carpet from urine for a week back in the beginning.. She was sitting 3 feet from the door, where her dog peed, and it was the third time that morning, So I reminded her every half hour. I didnt make the lunch she requested, and she was a bit peeved about it. I had told her mother I felt she should clean these oversites, because we have all been clear she is responsible for letting her dog out. But mamma quickly said no, she would clean it when she got home from work. I knew right then, I may be heading for a real power trip. Plus, I believe she got this fairy tale notion, that at my house, she would be a princess, with control of the days, and that I would not be like another adult/parent figure. From what I have read, 10 year olds didnt know they didn't necessarily have to mind, just a few months ago, and so defying is a bit of an experiment, that we have to endure till they get sick of consequences, they may pay a price, but they need to learn it the hard way, just in case you are not going to follow thru, so I imagine, when I was telling her to pick up her shoes, close the door, no wet towels on the rug please, she was disappointed. And a bit angry too. Just when she is an age where she is finding adult commands tiring, she gets another bossy adult to deal with. Of course, thats just too bad, but I do think this has a hand in her difficult moods. And no, she is not a monster. No one thinks that here I am sure, I certainly don't either. But she has learned manipulation, and she has come to rely on it too heavily. I have talked to her mother, she tries to get her way with me by implying her mom cant do anything for her because she works all the time. With her her mother it's that I am not attentive and wont do any thing with her, sorta the same. So the next time she is working one of us against the other,to get what she wants, (and yes it is normal, but it is running rampant in this house) Mom and are are casually are going to talk to each other right then, in front of her. There will be no fireworks, just state what was said, and then of course deny there is any truth to it, she will see the consequence. We will go on about our day, not punishing for he lie, for the time being, and I hope; in time, she will stop, because it just doesnt work. Sounds reasonable to me, and watch next week Ill be writting how I screwed that up too lol Your advice to be firm but always kind opened my eyes, I was not being firm often enough, she was so tough, and I had told her so many time, that by then time I got firm, being kind was beyond me. I tried not to look mad, but I was mad and that always shows. Seek, I do not by any stretch think this little girl is a phychopath. I think that she was in a place in her world, where at some point this manipulation was all that worked for her. I think things are better now, but she has made such good use of it she doesnt see any reason to give it up. But she spends so much effort and energy at it, she isnt thriving in any other areas, She has too much to keep straight, and too many people to keep from talking to one another. Her school performance last year was pathetic, with f's even. It's not easy to get an f in the 4th grade. I think that this is just something kids all have to learn, but she has had too few adults in her life to have it backfire before BUT, I am grateful to have you say she sounds normal, You have no idea. I dont have a clue either way to be honest, but it give me hope. And it lets me see, that maybe I am too concerned about a few things, I have let go of a little because of your words. I pick up shoes and various other things as often as I tell her to do it, that was a battle I didnt need. So thanks. I have noticed her mother isnt' setting the world on fire with this social grace either, but there's a twist I cant ignore, mom is deaf in one ear, and I think this has played a role, I have repeated myself to her, and when she hears me, she is graciously appreciative, most of the time. But I have realized that when I thought she heard me and choose to say nothing when a thank you was the standard response, she in fact did not. I have watched her with my son, and i c its something to take into consideration, and it makes me all the more determined because I see that it wasnt modeled for fair reason, and so Ill do it now. And Please Know that your compliment on my parenting, was surprisingly emotional, and extremely comforting. So much so, that my eyes welled up and I had realize that failing at this is part of my frustration. Which is not productive at all. I have to accept this is part of the angst too, I feel like I am failing to get along with a ten year old, and it feels crappy, so doing the normal parenting, "what do you say" has not come automatically, I didnt see that until I read your post, and I am grateful. So confidently and relentlessly, I am going to irritate the hell out of her the way I did my own boys. thank you! BEENTHERE I have actually done what you suggest, and I suspect someone has beat me to this technique, and wore it out, she considers any talking, no matter how hard I try to make it light and easy, as a lecture, and gets snotty for the rest of the day, tho this worked well on my boys, its like blowing in an ashtray with her. Even the praise, she sees right thru. I have had it work, if it was praise for something I had not corrected her on, shes a tough cookie. But she is improving here this last week, and I am hopeful it may be a real change for us all. thanks for the help. To the rest of you, speaking of rules, Ya caught me. It's amazing the way you all nailed me on so much. I have been a wuss about house rules, big time, and I knew it. Seeing it in print made me furious with myself, but thank you. The comments here are so insightful. Just goes to show how complex people lives are and how diverse and difficult their experiences have been. Chris M- You wrote- "my wife is depressed and angry every time she looks at the poor job they did with just about everything. I've tried to get her to agree to have another contractor come in and redo the kitchen at least, and some other things too but she won't go for it. Doesn't want anyone else in the house." You also wrote there is "hoarding in her family." That is a lot to unpack there, to choose a metaphor. Presumably you have been together a long time and you know her and her family and her upbringing well. It might help for you to know the roots of what is going here. Is she a perfectionist on some level and ashamed, even mortified that she screwed up by hiring the wrong people? Note, we don't think she screwed up, but might she? Was someone significant in her family of origin rigid/demanding with high standards? Was approval/love contingent on performance and appearance so now your wife cannot forgive her own imperfection and mistake and has poor self-esteem? Did someone marry beneath them (one of her parents or a grandparent or aunt) and always say that they came from better and coulda/woulda/shoulda so now your wife feels her station is lowered and she has lost her sense of self-worth? Is your wife the adult child of an alcoholic, so she, the fixer now that she sees her herself as having screwed up has lost her role in life because she is in over her head? Did your wife suffer a serious loss early on of a significant person? Have a traumatic event? Was she given the message from someone that ones possessions/appearance/home are how one is judged, rather than one's values/morals/behavior so now she sees herself as as trashed and worthless as her home? Anyhoo, you get the idea. No, please don't be her therapist. The above is just food for thought for you. And while you are thinking about the possible origins of your wife's psychopathology, why not think about yourself, too. Not many spouses would be willing to live in the space you describe for as long as you have with a spouse defiantly unwilling to exert a joule of energy to change things or even allow anyone else to. And why haven't you unpacked things yourself and hung up the pictures? Are you afraid of her? Do you think she is so fragile she will flip out totally if you do unpack and hang pictures? Have you done something not so perfect yourself so you two have struck some sort of devil's bargain? Think about it. If so, admit it. And stop talking about ancient history. How about this- Tell her, "This weekend I am unpacking, whatever. I would be very happy if you would help me and I could really use the help, but I will do it whether you help me or not." Then do it, whether she cries, or screams or yells, or curses your every family member. And if she hits you or throws the furniture around, you need to call 911 for a 5150 hold or whatever the numbers are for a psychiatric hold in your state because she would be a danger to you and herself. I mean it. Then another day, unpack the pictures and measure everything and where they will go, and show her the plan and say "This is where I am thinking of putting everything, do you like it, or do you have any suggestions? Take a half-hour to look at it. " (Make a copy in case she rips it up.) Then if she has comments about your lay-out, discuss it with her. If she has no comments, do it per your design, and think about using Command Hooks so you don't make holes in the wall in case you change your mind later on. Throw away any of your stuff you want. Do not throw away her stuff, or communal stuff like photographs. I strongly advise against getting a storage locker, they are exorbitantly expensive, and the odds are she will never go into it, and you will be spending $200 a month in perpetuity for things that are actually worth very little and that she never looks at and doesn't need. When you have done everything with your stuff and the furniture and dishes, then hire a contractor and kitchen designer if you need that. Invite your wife to the design meeting. Tell her that it is going to happen. Period. Tell her you would like her input, she has good ideas and great taste and she and her input is important and you value it and her, but it is going to happen, whether she participates or not, and you are not waiting any longer. And if she doesn't go, you will decide on the plans and you will not pay the added cost if she wakes up and wants to change things later on. And you tell the contractor no changes that you don't sign off on. You get the idea. She can go to counseling. You can go. You can go together. Meanwhile, get cracking. Remember Newton's First Law? INERTIA A body at rest will stay at rest unless acted upon by an external force.

I am working today, too, but may duck out early if the pace doesn't pick up!

It hasn't been a great year here, either, so I am really hoping the new one will be better!

We just had two beautiful 35-40 degre days, but that all ended last night. Yesterday's rain resulted in lots of ice when the temp dropped overnight and there are more winter storm warnings for the weekend.

We are going over to the neighbor's tonight for a celebratory cocktail or two. Much safer than going out.

Tomorrow I'll be making my lobster dinner. Hope I don't cry when I have to drop the little buggers in the pot of boiling water! LOL

Having a couple of friends over tonight....they don't live more than 3 blocks away so even if it does get nasty they should have no problems.
then Sunday I am having 8 for brunch to celebrate anotehr's birthday.

Happy New Year Friends~

I have a pot of black eyed peas with smoked ham hocks cooking now.

We're eating dinner at home and then going to a friends house to ring in the new year.

Tomorrow we're going out on the boat with good friends to celebrate the New Year. Weather is perfect - should be about 79 degrees tomorrow and bright sunshine. We'll stop at a restaurant on the water to have a nice lunch.

Have fun no matter how you celebrate the new year!

Happy New Year everyone!

Been a crazy buzy Christmas, chock full of the 4 F's ( family, friends, food and fun) so no complaints but I am bushed!

Tonight we will have dinner , just the two of us, in front of the fire place, a bottle of wine and some simple Italian fare. I'll try hard to stay awake until the "ball drop" but suspect I won't.

Tomorrow we will probably laze around but by Sunday we have to get our act in gear. We have decided to list the house so there is lots to do in terms of "showing" prep.....I'm not looking forward to it one bit! The photographer comes Wednesday and the agent open house is next Friday....ugh!

Big changes for us in 2011!

Yes, Sharon tell us more about your move!

Just the two of us here and we'll be having shrimp cocktails with salad, nuts, chips, blue cheese & crackers, cava (Spanish champagne) and we'll be watching the midnight celebrations on TV from Germany and Madrid where they are an hour ahead of us.

Then for a second glass of bubbly an hour later, when it's our turn to reach midnight at the same time as London, so we'll be tuned in to British TV as well as a local channel broadcasting from the south of Tenerife.

The Spanish custom is to eat twelve grapes at midnight. Called "las uvas de la suerte" or the grapes of good luck, they have to be eaten one at a time on each stroke of the clock and rinsed down with mouthfuls of cava in order to have a coming year of good luck.

So from this custom arises the gathering by the masses in the Puerta del Sol, or main plaza of Madrid, dominated by a huge clock which is visible to all and televised throughout the country. Of course smaller cities and towns also have their main plaza with clock, where the locals gather to eat their 12 grapes and drink their bubbly.

We will be awake and staying up for this as there are also some firework displays in the town which are visible from our front porch. I could never miss a good show of fireworks! Besides with the noise of them going off outside, one could not get to sleep before midnight here anyway.

We are staying home tonight and having some friends in tomorrow to enjoy football.

I think Sharon's plan is... live at the lake house, sell the house in town and after it sells, think about buying a condo in town. Cuts down on the work, so one can enjoy life in retirement.

Happy New Year to everyone! We are now in Florida enjoying the beautiful weather! We arrived yesterday and will live here until April. We are watching the Notre Dame game as I type. DH has a cold beer and I'm thinking about pouring a glass of wine. However, if I do that I will never see the New Year come in!

Happy New Year everyone! No plans here. There are a couple of parties in the neighborhood, but it's going to be below zero, so we're opting to stay home and keep the fire going.

It's cold and sunny and the trees are heavy with a thick layer of snow... sparkly and gorgeous. The kids will be up to go snowshoeing tomorrow or Sunday. I plan to stay close to the stove, make some bread and a roast beef dinner, and put away Christmas. A nice peaceful start to 2011.

Be safe, all. Clinking with a hot eggnog and rum.

We are having our annual New Years Eve bash, me, DH and the 3 and 6 year old grandsons. After dinner we usually pop fireworks and then get in the hot tub, but it is so cold that we may just have to do dinner, popcorn and a game or several of crazy ates ( the 6 year olds favorite game.)

I always think the new year is on your birthday....to me that is the 'new' year vs. the flipping of the calendar. Nothing special here....never was one to make a big deal of New Years' Eve. Laurie has to get up at 5am for work and we have the new pup and a handful (Eight still here!) of doggies...so just a low-key night...nothing out of the ordinary. On the plus side...no hangover tomorrow!

Tonight, nothing much. This has to be my least favorite "holiday" of the year. I'll be looking at the back of my eyelids at midnight, I'm sure.

Tomorrow Niece #3 arrives with her DH and two darling little girls. They will be here until Sunday. After that, I am through with the holiday season. Next week, I undeck the halls and untrim the tree. I always feel bad for it as it sits by the curb waiting to be chipped up.

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!!!!

We stayed home as well, had the inlaws over for the usual Friday night dinner. DH and I are watching a basketball game, and I think we'll record the Rose Parade and let the kid watch the Marching Bands tomorrow, speeding past the floats LOL. We got a couple of invites but prefer to stay home and off the roads on NYE.

Hey will the folks who have a real birthday tomorrow chime in? Jan 1st is the default and I can't remember who is real and who isn't! If I miss you, send me an email, thanks!

Nancy has it right.

We are at the cottage so much that it is becoming a real chore to manage the house and Gardens here. I can only take a week or two at a time at the cottage during the winter. so we intend to buy a condo in Toronto, right in the city, in an area called Bloor West Village.

We will be at the cottage from April until September, and plan to travel September/October. The condo will be home base from November to April with lots of trips to the cottage.

Well that's the plan anyway but first we have to sell the house.

Big change!!!!

Sharon, that sounds like a great plan, I loved my trip Toronto so a condo there would be very convenient to some great markets and lots of activities.

Plus, it would give you more time to focus on the cottage and spend time there on the lake. Yup, big changes...
