Most of the wild rice you buy in a store is farmed wild rice.
During the processing of this product the seed heads are striated by mechanical means.

This gives you a quick cooking rice that can be mixed into those rice blends.

I find the difference between real, hand harvested wild rice and the farmed, mechanical harvested and mechanically tenderized rice quite large.

there is a reason true, hand harvested, actually wild, wild rice is so expensive. Its worth it.

I am not greedy, just superstitious. Teresa got a new job just when she started to give out the rice. When I got the rice, I ended up with a fantastic business oportunity. I really think the rice brings good luck.

If I win, I will give it away to bring more luck.

I am having some fun with the rice. I took some extreme close ups with the rice before and after cooking. Beautiful stuff.

jasdip - it was the first photo that scared me! Then it occurred to me that dcarch just increased his chances of winning the drawing - who is going to enter now after viewing that first photo? LOL

IâÂÂm just curious is your wild rice any different than the Californian grown wild rice I buy at Trader JoeâÂÂs from the pictures it sure looks the same.

Claudia - it is essentially the same aquatic grass seed. The cultivated wild rice is harvested in a different manner. It is grown in paddies which are drained when the rice is ready to harvest. Then when the ground is dry enough combines are brought in to harvest the rice.
Hand harvested rice is beaten off the stalks with sticks, dried in the sun and toasted in iron kettles over a fire. No machinery involved. The cultivated is a darker color because of processing it goes through.
It's all good however!

Wild Rice dilema. I must've been a little sleepy when I typed this thread yesterday morning. I wrote Monday, December 7.

Well, it's Monday but it is the 6th of December. Shall I extend the deadline out to tomorrow afternoon? Someone emailed that they thought 2 days was kind of short notice for a drawing because some only check the CF once a week.

What to do..........what to do? I think I should extend it to tomorrow afternoon.

Thoughts anyone? Keeping in mind that for every person that throws their name in the hat, your odds of winning go down! :-)

Oh, I had it in my mind that the drawing was today.
I don't pay attention to the dates.....just when it's to be drawn.

I guess that's why I didn't get the winning email!!! Hahahahaha!

Whatever you want to do my dear, is fine with me. I'll just have to keep my fingers crossed, longer.

I think extending the deadline at least a few more days is a good idea.

It is a very busy time of the year for many people, religious holidays, and bad weather in many areas.

Well, maybe Mustangs did not get scared by the up close photos of the rice. You have not fooled me however! That first photo of the uncooked grains is not the rice I sent you. I'm pretty sure those are petrified cucumbers from the Stone Age! (wink)
