I lent my snowblower to my neighbor Sheri last Saturday. She stopped by with her 4 year old Joshua to drop off a lovely Christmas cactus to thank me. WTH does this have to do with the wild rice lotto?

Well, I had folded the papers containing the names of all who had entered and placed them in a bowl. I thought I would ask my renter to select one. However, Joshua asked what I was doing so I explained it to him. He asked if he could pick a name and I said sure! I turned to the pantry to grab some rice to give to his mother. It's amazing what can happen in a couple of seconds. I looked over at the table and Joshua had 4 pieces of paper on the table.

His mom said something about picking only one paper and he burst into tears. Poor little guy. It's 7:30 and he probably had a really long day. I assurred him that 4 people would be getting a prize instead of one. What the heck - I still have 40+ lbs in the pantry. And sharing the rice has been bringing good things and friends into my life.

I have not gone back and re-read the thread, but I believe one or two of you have never tried wild rice. I hope you all enjoy it. My email link on my member page works. Please send me your addresses - this evening would be great. I'm headed to the post office tomorrow to mail shambo's rice. It would be great to mail them all at once.

thank goodness for wild rice and Joshua!!! I'm mostly a lurker, but both of my in-laws were from Cloquet,MN and so I have a lot of experience with wild rice. I hope those that you choose to send it to will be converts to the great grain that it is. I buy 10 lbs. every year, we love the stuff!!!!
Anyway, what a great way to introduce your new forum friends to a new to them product.

I am SO excited. Today we went to visit a friend that was in a bad accident and is in the hospial. It is a 2 1/2 hour drive, each way. I took my little laptop so I could check and see who won. I really wanted to win this and get to try real wild rice.

First it was the Greek recipe DVD's and now the wild rice, YAHOO!

Theresa, do you know if there is an online source for wild rice? Thank you!

Nope, but now I will. I know y'all think all of TX looks like the old cowboy movies. Hard to imagine growing rice. This picture is from near my son's house.(about 10 miles behind the treeline.) They also grow a lot of lawn grasses in east and southeast parts of the state. Harvesting rice Try wild pecan rice, too. It is yummy. It is sold under the Konriko label. Maybe others, but that is the brand sold here. This is a quote from an article about rice. "This is another variety of aromatic or specialty rice found in US. This rice is a basmati hybrid. Louisiana Pecan/Wild Pecan Rice is grown only in the bayou country of southern Louisiana. It is a long grain rice. It has a rich, nutty flavor and a popcorn-like fragrance. It is similar in flavor to Basmati, but the flavor also suggests pecans. Louisiana pecan rice is so named because it is dried on pecan husks and picks up the nutty aroma."

It IS taking a long time to load, Bonnie. I was able to fold half a line of clothes waiting . . . Does starting a harvest thread make sense? I had lettuce in my lunch sandwich today but we are definitely down to the last of it. We'll see if the most recent transplants can overcome the dog days of Summer. Three beds of peas have been ripped out so far. I harvested the shallots from sets this week! A little early but it was either get them out of the ground or allow the weeds in the bed to run to seed! What is with the onion family? They offer ZERO resistance to weeds and trying to pull a weed beside an onion at almost any stage of growth means taking a 50/50 chance of ripping the onion out of the ground along with the weed! Fortunately, I've still got the shallots-from-seed left in the bed, uh well, 50% of them. I think they'll be able to grow to be sets that can survive a Winter. I'd be pleased to get another variety going. All onions are doing well where more attentive weeding prevailed. Altho' I am a little worried about my leeks. I blamed the American Flag variety for being so scrawny last year and went back to Lancelot . . . they seem rather scrawny, themselves. It looks as tho' sweet onions from seed will continue "bulbing-up" sufficiently not to embarrass me in o8. The sweets from plants are HUGE! The little leeks will get more fish emulsion tomorrow and maybe they can catch up. The 1st zucchini came off a vine nearly 10 days ago. Not much sign of anything else in the cucurbit patch with the exception of small Fastbreak cantaloupes forming! Oh, and it looks like I'll have a good sized pun'kin for Halloween. The earliest of the sweet corn has started to tassel. And hey, I've got the 1st Dusky eggplant for tomorrow's lunch!! Somehow, it seems like we should be later in the season . . . Maybe that's because we went from a cool Spring, to very pleasant warm weather, to some Summer HEAT, to today. Whereas it was 91Â° mid-afternoon yesterday, it was 63Â° with a smattering of rain showers at the same time today. Makes it seem like Autumn. digitS'

Oh Bob - I'm so glad it made you feel good! I had 24 people at my house for dinner and as they were nibbling on the appetizers I was thinking how grateful I was for that recipe! They were completely gone. Good job inventing that and for sharing it with us! We are lucky! Foodonastump, Here's the recipe. They were sooo good! One of my oldest T&T recipes is for stuffed-mushroom caps. The are relatively easy to make a day or so ahead, and then you merely pop them in the oven for 10 minutes or so and serve them. Bob's Magical Mushrooms 1 lb white mushrooms 12 oz cream cheese 3 Tbsp butter 1 tsp minced garlic 4 slices of provolone cheese 3 green onions (chopped fine) Remove stem and cut away the lower half of the mushroom exposing the gills Soften cream cheese in microwave, mix garlic and green onions into cream cheese. Melt butter in small dish. For each mushroom, spoon the cream cheese mixture into the mushroom, then dip the top into the butter, and place in a glass baking pan. Then cover the top of the cream cheese with provolone cheese. The above amount should fill a 13x9 baking pan. At this point you can refrigerate overnight. Preheat oven to 400 deg F Bake for 10-12 minutes until the provolone is melted and the mushrooms are cooked. Serve immediately.

trixie - I hope your friend is okay. After reading your post I am thrilled Joshua picked your name!

I do have a couple of sources I order from in years our crop is not so fruitful. I will email those sources to you! Both of them are way up in Northern Minnesota - Deer River territory.

I also intended to congratulate the other winners! I wish you could go back and correct or at least post again.

Teresa, our friend has a long recovery. This accident happened October 16th. He had many serious injuries!

Teresa, thanks so much. I am thrilled and shocked. You are more than generous to part with f pounds of wild rice. I have not used wild rice, it will be a treat! Sorry I was away yesterday. I hope I haven't inconvienced you. Sending you an email. Oh, maybe our paths have not crossed before. I have been on this forum for several years, but have not posted as much recently because of family demands and other commitments. I hope to get to know you.

Teresa, I'm so excited that I won some of your wild rice. I have never tried it so it's really going to be special.

Thank you for the Lotto! I don't play our state lottery but wouldn't miss a CF Lottery. I am TERRIBLE at sending packages so that's another amazement for me is that you are getting all the packages out.

Congratulations to all the winners. I am liking how this lotto ended up with four winners. The real winner of course is Teresa. Not too many people can afford to give.

I got to the post office today and there were no less than a couple hundred people. I will take an earlier bus tomorrow morning and go to the PO when they open at 6:30. So Shambo and all others should get their rice Saturday.

Lou - no need to send me anthing. I found a package of goodies on my steps today that came from you! That will be a seperate thread.

This was really fun! And Joshua did a great job picking a good mix of folks. A couple have never had the rice, some people I know, one I've never heard of! I was very happy to be able to share rice this year. I've never seen a crop like this, and I don't expect I ever will again. There have been years I have ordered rice from Deer River, Minnesota when our crop was slim. I ordered 30 lbs of rice from the guy a couple weeks ago for a friend who was coming to town for Thanksgiving. The shipping to my house was cheaper than shipping it to Texas. I had plans to meet this friend for drinks and I handed off the rice then. If anyone wants the name of that place, let me know. There are several rice sellers in Deer River, but only one has hand harvested lake rice.

Lake Mayor - sorry I just notice you included your email in your post above. I emailed you. Gees - this working thing is harder than I remember! LOL By the end of the day my brain is scrambled!

Now I am going to sit back and sniff the pizzelles that Lou sent me - and get high on the scent. I want to sleep with them on my pillow!

Teresa, I sent you my address. You are a wonderful person to go to the post office and fight with 100's of people to get this sent off to us. We are four very lucky people. This is really special to me and as others have said, this will come back around to you, I'm sure of that.

I could kiss little Joshua for drawing 4 names! The wild rice is so good! I baked a cup for Teresa's wild rice soup, but after the first taste, I could have eaten a bowl of just plain rice. It's like nothing I've ever tasted.

The soup had a few variations from the recipe because DH was just getting over the GI flue after Thanksgiving. I left out the cream, sherry and almonds. It was scrumptious soup. DH loved it. I am anxious to try the full recipe.
