Well, a lot of pecans come from Texas and the drought destroyed that crop. Along the gulf coast and up into Georgia, rain was in short supply there too. About $10/lb. is what I'm seeing also. I get mine from the Ellis Bros. in Georgia. Excellent quality. Hubs will pick them up when he returns from his upcoming trip "up north".
Try the TJ in Des Moines. TJ seems to have good prices on nuts. I haven't looked here this week.
I don't use many pecans. I just bought 15 pounds of new crap walnuts from a friend with a family walnut ranch. $66 for 15 pounds. Mostly perfect halves.
I did a quick online search. I think you got a bargain.
North Carolina's pecan crop is wonderful this year due to great weather. Here locally I can buy in-shell pecans for $2 per pound, shelled for $6.25 per pound for 10# or more from the little growers. The on-line NC Pecan Growers members prices are about $10 per pound for shelled pecan halves. Less for pieces.
I bet shipping would jack the price up for those NC pecans. I've glanced at the price of pecans here, but don't remember what it was, other than way more than walnuts, so I've got a good stock of walnuts, no pecans, in my freezer.
My pecan trree was dropping bad pecans in July and August this year. Obviously, way too early. And I watered it, but that didn't help it enough not to shed it's pecans way too early. It was just too darn hot!
I am lucky. I haven't had to buy pecans in a while. My brother-in-law in GA has a couple of huge pecan trees and every year he sends us a large priority mail box full of pceans from his trees. I have to shell 'em, sure....but they are free!
I was cruising the nut aisles at a few stores this morning anyway so I kept an eye out for pecans. Prices up to about $13/lb were common, but the best price I found by far was at Whole Foods - $7.99 for their 365 branded pecans.
Speaking of "Whole Paycheck", I've considered them an absolute last resort for many years, but this isn't the first time recently that I've found pretty good deals there. Anyone else noticing a trend?
We have a Whole Foods here as well as a Trader Joe's....they always have great deals. You just have to go in regularly to find them. I bought Pecans at Costco, don't remember how much but they were not to expensive. I always get free walnuts, we have friends in Yuba City that farm them. They give us a full gunny sack full (they are cracked) and ready for market.
Smirk. I am a terrible typist! I just usually catch the really bad ones! I'll blame the long bike ride followed by a glass of wine...okay two glasses.
I see good nut prices at Walmart. I will look at the farmer's market and local stands and see what pecans are going for. It seems that more walnuts and almonds are grown here than pecans.
The advantage of purchasing from the groves is that the pecans are as fresh as can be! Sure, Walmart and Publix has pecans, but there's a big difference in quality!!
Oh man! I wish there was some way to trade my pecans for hazelnuts. We live on the other side of the continent from where they grow the best and I love hazelnuts, but never, ever, ever see them in stores.
The 2-pound bags of pecan halves from Sam's Club have nearly doubled over the last 18-months (to $16.24). Just in time for one of our newest snack favorites (link below). We tried the recipe with almonds - they were okay, but pecans were better.
I generally stock-up after-the-holiday sales when I can find nuts 50-75% off (in shell or out - hubby will shell nuts for me while watching football ;-). I'll be keeping my eyes open for discounted nuts this year for sure....
