Grocery Prices for Today.

I went grocery shopping today and there were some bargains to be found. Store brand canned vegetables were two for a dollar, but of course you don't have to buy two to get the good price. Strawberries were 3 quarts for $5.00, seedless grapes, $.99 a pound, sweet onions $.99 a pound, a great variety of apples $.59 a pound, big colorful sweet peppers were 2 for $3.00, milk $2.50 a gallon any kind except chocolate, boneless, skinless chicken breasts were $1.99 a pound, store brand pie filling was $2.00 a can and pumpkin was also $2.00 for a great big can, lots of things including frozen vegetables were 10 for $10 and the eleventh was free, they were mix or match and Steel Cut Oats, a box of 24 ounces was on sale for $2.69 as was the 18 ounce box of Bulgar Wheat. I did buy one 2 pound 8 ounce jar of Jif peanut butter was $5.49, it was not on special sale and has an expiration date into 2013. Pecans are still expensive at $8.99 a pound. I have most of my stuff put away but have to find room in a freezer to put some things. I think I will have to haul it out to the club house refrigerator freezer. Izzi will like that as we will go out on my "big rig". I bought extra as bad weather will be here one of these days and I hate to be carrying things in when it is bad out. Are there any bargains this week for you?

I had a nice chicken sandwich for lunch from Wendy's and a large unsweetened iced tea. Very good. Beautiful day today, no rain yet and it is 70 out. The leaves are in full color here and so pretty. I hope everyone is having a very good day.

Broccoli for 59cents. That's a bargain!

BUT we noticed that the bottled water for $1.99 had 20, not 24 bottles in the package. That's a first!!

We drink tap water (tastes really good....no chlorine smell etc), but DH likes to have bottled water on hand so he can take a few bottles with him when he plays, in case the bar doesn't provide non-alcoholic drinks (which happens seldom).

Just sent DH to the grocery store to get milk $1.57 a gallon.
Red seedless grapes $.79 a pound.

Wally World is, by far, the most expensive source of produce in my area. You have to shop around and know the prices, before buying ANYTHING at WMT or else you may pay more for the same item, available for less, down the street! Not every price is a bargain in their stores. Sale items usually are. As you probably know, their prices on any given item may vary from store to store, as they use demographic data to set prices. The pricing is determined by the average household income in the surrounding ZIP Codes and can vary by 10-20%. They also adjust prices upward in any store, to reflect losses due to shoplifting and employee theft (actual or anticipated!). Wow, 29 cents a pound is a deal! Like jane, we also got our bird for 48 cents a pound after having to pay $25.00 for other items. But it's easy enough to spend that and then some! I couldn't begin to estimate how much our Thanksgiving dinner cost because both hubby and I have been picking up stuff here and there at Aldi's, Sam's and our local grocer. I bought a HUGE pumpkin pie at Sam's for $7.88. I don't think I could bake one that big and spend much less for all the ingredients that it takes. The only extra things I have to get are the green beans, yams, turkey wings to do a make-a-head gravy and fresh rolls that I'll pick up the day before. I make my own corn bread for the stuffing, and I have all the ingredients for that.

I known people in the refrigeration business (they see the real gross stuff) and in the restaurant business. My own brother was a cook for a very well known Bay Area chain for 19 years. My son is good friends with the head chef of a very high end San Francisco restaurant. I've been in many a restaurant kitchen. I'm also the type of person who sees things around me that most people miss. Believe me if some of you really saw/knew what goes on in the restaurant biz you would never eat out. Some of the priciest places can be the worst. Some dives can be the cleanest. It all depends on the owner and management. Larger areas haven't got nearly enough food inspectors to keep up. Even when citations are given they only have to fix them for the recheck and then most places know the inspector won't be back for a year or more. It really comes down to the ethics of the owner/manager and cook who runs the kitchen.

You're right - when I saw the date, in small print, and did some calculations (my memory isn't what it used to be), I realized that the limiting date was Sunday ... and it was then Tuesday. I was somewhat out of line when I claimed the $2.29, agreed ... but when she gave me back my $20.00, originally I thought that she was starting over, but when she said that it was free, I said that I figured that I should pay the price that I'd asked for, at least, as that was the price that was showing on the shelf (rather than the higher price of 2/$5.00 that should have been showing, had the staff been vigilant). But she assured me that, as it was the store's error - it was free. I think that I'll feel some obligation to pass it on. __________________________ I'm crying the blues, some, as I'd neglected to write my cheques to the federal and provincial branches of a political party earlier in the year, at least before year end, which offer some substantial credits on income tax, or even partial refunds. But it was at the time that my car quit (Dec. 27/28) and I was staying at son's (minus chequebook) till Sunday Dec. 31 and the letters carrying the cheques had to be postmarked by Dec. 31. So ... though I've been paying no or minimal income tax for several years ... I'll be paying some for 2017! ole joyful

Prices here in ND are way too high, especially in Central and Western due to the oil boom. Gas should be less than a $ per gallon with the thousands of gallons of oil being shipped out of the country. Milk is almost 5.00 a gallon, with other items not far behind. It really makes it rough on those who are not getting big bucks now. Especially the Seniors, teachers, law enforcement. They wages are much lower than other states.

What is killing us is cat food! Our inside kids are one thing but the outside ones are getting to be expensive until we manage to catch them all! One of the stores has Friskies on sale 30 cans for $11, we'll be heading up there Friday night. We usually end up buying 150 cans.

I only feed the outside cats, (none inside), dry food and buy the store brand. I buy a 16 or 18 pound bag for $8.99 today.

Milk here is $1.97 a gallon. I paid $3.50 for 1.75 lbs of ground turkey today.

We feed them dry food, Sue but we also feed them canned. I used to feed them Special Kitty (WalMart brand) in a 13 oz can, but now they make only the 5.5 oz cans, and those end up being more costly than the Friskies on sale (which contain more food as opposed to 'juice'.

We have 4 adults (3 are neutered but Mama is not) and 3 kittens out there. I have a live trap, we're going to try to catch Mama.

Kraft had a news article that they aren't going to raise their coffee prices.

To get around this they have decided to make their Maxwell House coffee in the large tins, 1/3 smaller. This is a HUGE gripe of mine.

Their prices don't reflect the smaller size either. We used to buy the 925 gram can (used to be 1 kg, then went to 925), for $4.99 on sale (regular price is $11.99)

Today the 631 gram can (1/3 smaller) is on sale for $4.99

That is criminal! It's forcing people to buy coffee more often, with the smaller sizes too. Grrrrrr

Sherry, I agree with you. How sneaky is this? Another trick is that some companies use is to keep the container the same size and then make the bottom even more concave! Geez.

WOW! I can't get over the difference in milk prices. I bought a gallon yesterday for $4.00, and that was the store brand!

I shopped last week at Sharp Shopper. Celery, 69ÃÂ¢, broccoli 59ÃÂ¢ a pound, cucumbers 39ÃÂ¢ each. They had Domino Pure Cane sugar 5 lbs 2.99. I'm stocking up on that; I have 20 lbs now. I only buy one brand of milk; it is $3.49 a gallon.

The best find for me was WHITE potatoes. They had 10 lb bags for $7 something and 5 lb bags for $3 something. They also had 10 lb bags of the same potatoes, in bags that were marked "unclassified." On the bag it explained what that meant: misshaped, possibly a cut or black spot, etc. They were $2.99 a bag.

I got the unclassified ones. They are perfect after you peel them. I've made soup, and today I made potato salad. They have that good earthy flavor that white potatoes have. A few are big enough to bake. I will surely buy those again if they have them when I need potatoes. BTW on the bag it said "Grown in the USA."

I do love a bargain.

Hi I live in Sydney, Australia.

I am astounded at the prices quoted.

Our $ and your $ are equal in value.

Here is what I have been paying lately.

Grapes $8.99 a kilo. origin US.
Milk $2 for 2 litres.
avacado $3 for two.
bananas $14 a kilo.
apples $3.99 a kilo.
mandarins $2.99 kilo.

a kilo is 2.2 pounds. 1 litre = 33 oz.

I think we pay too much for food here.

POPI!! WOWSERS!! that is absurd!! 14.00 for two pounds of bananas? I think I paid 59 cents a pound a couple of weeks ago...what is your minimum wage and what do your service people typically make per year (service meaning fireman/police officers/teachers) I'm glad to see your dollar and ours are the same and I hope it keeps up...my girlfriend and I are headed there in Sept, 2012...we can't wait!!

I'm headed to grocery shop in the morning and it never has bothered me before but they are sure going up and I don't know about y'all but I worry about people on fixed incomes or minimum wage earners...my kids are both back at home cause they barely make enough to pay a car payment/phone bill...let alone try to make it in an apartment with electric/water bills...

Sue I bet Indiana is alive with color about now!! I just love Brown County in the fall!!
