It's the scanning code of conduct. We practice is: but you need to bring up the subject in our store. :) You will get their FIRST item for free UP to $10. But pay the price it's actually supposed to be for the second item. A lot of stores (not just Shoppers) will do this automatically. Also: did the cashier hit the total button before telling you the price you pay? With a lot of our sale items, the price changes on the screen once we hit the total button.

Something I'm not clear on here: The 14th has come and gone. Therefore the price you should have paid was $5 for the two, correct? Seems to me the cashier cheated the store out of $5.

@cynic - most stores will honor the price on the shelf, even if it's expired - because it's ON THEM to make sure all prices are correct.

Of course the store won't go broke from one giveaway but my point is that when you put an expiration on something, AFAIC they said it was over. They can honor it if they want, it's their option - their store. But they shouldn't have to. The price was correct. The old price expired. If the store wants to do something different, that's fine but why bother putting expiration on there. And yes, I know how few people seem to be able to read, much less comprehend print these days. I suppose coupons must be honored even if they have expiration dates on them as long as the coupon is presented. Or if someone has an old ad, the store should honor the price because it's in print. Makes as much sense. And you can be sure the customers would return! To each their own, and voluntary code involved or not, I personally would (/could) never expect a company to honor a price that is specifically stated as expired, whether it be a shelf tag, a talker or a print ad. I just can't imagine doing it. But that's me. And beyond that, if a store does things like that but does not honor old ads, I'd quit patronizing them. They're catering to the wrong clientele IMO and that certainly is to the detriment of the consumers as a whole.

Joyful, enjoy your free cream :-) I appreciate stores that have policies to cover such situations, and teach those policies to their checkers so that management doesn't have to be called over for every little situation. Good for them.

As far as expiration dates go: what I expect is that sometime between midnight and opening time (or say, 6:00AM for 24-hour stores), store personnel look at their own shelves and remove expired sale notices. There's one store here that's often a couple days late ... it's irritating ... because then I have to double-check what today's date actually is, lol.

Good for you OJ! Our stores have stopped honoring the "free item" scan accuracy policy. I run across an older checker, once in awhile, who'll give an item away if it scans in wrong, but it's rare. The shelf tag, if the sale has expired, should have been removed by the store...so it's really nice they gave it to you!

I think this is very important. You might have one store that goes by the letter. and certainly that is their right. Then you get a different type of store that has the flexibility to give a bit of a break, and the customer leaves the store happy.

I have heard, do not know if it is true, that grocery store profit margins are slender. Building loyalty might be considered smart business.

It's all about good customer service. We don't honour expired coupons. That's 100% not on the store. It's 100% on the customer to read their coupons they bring us to make sure they're still good to use. Moot point.

Old ads are also moot point. They're old ads and flyers. That would include the entire store so NO: we don't honour old ads.

We ONLY honour sale talkers (as we call them in our company) that are left up because out of the average 6000 SALE talkers alone (doesn't include price freeze, optimum or clearout) that we take down every Friday during the day so we can put up the next 6000+ talkers Friday evening, that we may have missed. We honour it for GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE. It's a Canadian thing. Most stores here will do that, not just our chain. Walmart even does. And they're cheap as hedoublehockeysticks. We do this to make sure our employees don't get lazy and only take down some talkers. And to be nice. We have a reputation to stick to. ;)

That happened to me at Kroger. Someone had not pulled the "sale" price on bottled water. They gave it to me free. And then sent someone to go and pull the sign.

Elmer, who's getting their magnifying glass out to see the expiration date on the tag. If there's a sale tag on the shelf that has a big huge $2.29 on it, that's all that I see. I don't go around checking each shelf sign for the small print and a customer should NOT HAVE TO!

You're right - when I saw the date, in small print, and did some calculations (my memory isn't what it used to be), I realized that the limiting date was Sunday ... and it was then Tuesday.

I was somewhat out of line when I claimed the $2.29, agreed ... but when she gave me back my $20.00, originally I thought that she was starting over, but when she said that it was free, I said that I figured that I should pay the price that I'd asked for, at least, as that was the price that was showing on the shelf (rather than the higher price of 2/$5.00 that should have been showing, had the staff been vigilant).

But she assured me that, as it was the store's error - it was free.

I think that I'll feel some obligation to pass it on.

I'm crying the blues, some, as I'd neglected to write my cheques to the federal and provincial branches of a political party earlier in the year, at least before year end, which offer some substantial credits on income tax, or even partial refunds. But it was at the time that my car quit (Dec. 27/28) and I was staying at son's (minus chequebook) till Sunday Dec. 31 and the letters carrying the cheques had to be postmarked by Dec. 31.

So ... though I've been paying no or minimal income tax for several years ... I'll be paying some for 2017!

Some years ago, about to attend a reunion of former missionaries in Korea, a few miles from here, I'd been asked to bring some serviettes/napkins for lunch, and had talked to a person in the checkout line.

When I got to the cashier ... she said that the guy ahead of me in line had paid for my order. He was gone - couldn't thank him.

I've felt some need to pass it on ... and a while ago, when someone was leaving some things behind, apparently due to shortage of money, I paid for some.

arkansas girl, I think you misunderstood what I said. I wasn't suggesting anyone walks around stores with a magnifying glass nor pays that much attention to what's marked. Though some do.

debby's comment was that her store honored shelf prices even if wrong, "it's a Canadian thing". I don't think that's the case at all, I think the same happens in the US at most stores. My wife had such an experience a few days ago at Whole Foods. A food item we often get, normally priced at $9.99, was shelf marked to be $5.99, so she got two. At checkout, it was recorded at $9.99. She normally wouldn't have paid attention but did because of the big markdown. She spoke up and we got both for free. I didn't think of that as being out of the ordinary.

Looks like it's a "U.S. thing", too ... and fairly frequently, it seems.

Folks from any other countries feel like reporting in?

So it bothers you when someone says it's a Canadian thing, but not when it's a Chicago (NOT southern) thing. Got it. Wonder why this one bothered you, but I shouldn't be bothered by the one you've made me before (more than once) and Anglo made this time.

If your comment is directed to me (Chicago?), nothing bothered me. I questioned something said I thought was said in a serious tone that I believed to be incorrect. Everyone is entitled to question and be questioned, be right or wrong, concerning as many things as they wish. It doesn't "bother" me.

That same store gives a discount on quite a few items, including a bag of milk, to seniors on Seniors' Thursday, weekly, when using their store loyalty card.

After I got home a week ago today ... I noticed that, while the Seniors' Thursday (with store loyalty card) was to have been $3.42 for 4 litres (just over a gallon) ... I'd been charged regular price of $4.27.

On my visit there a half hour or so ago ... after checking my receipt and some consultation, the cashier gave me a refund of the difference.
