Did you 'register' for crystal stemware/china?
Comments (40)I can understand that some people think that registering is demanding and greedy. That's the way it is now. I have watched young women go on line and see what has been bought from their "checklist." And the check list is long. And there are many stores. One thing they do that is nice is they will pick places like Target and Bed Bath and Beyond so you have a range of prices. But my friend's daughter was furious when she got gifts that weren't on the list. My friend was horrified my her daughter's behavior but I have seen that before. If I were the groom to be I would run for the hills. In my day....I registered for only china & silverware and glassware. That's what my friends did. I had no idea if anyone bought it. I was at school. We opened our gifts after we were married. There were many more things like candy bowls and candle sticks and a hobnail sugar and creamer set. Whatever they bought I have til this day to remember them by. No taking things back. I was flabbergasted that people would think of such nice things to make or buy for me.And I wrote my very personalized thank you notes within the month. My mother made sure of that. She would have been embarrassed to get a phone call asking if I got the gift. Someone gave me a shower and I got practical gifts like cookbooks and some lingerie and fun gifts. Nowdays, I have friends who give elaborate engagement parties at expensive restaurants. You can't tell the engagement party from the wedding reception. There is competition between friends. No wonder these kids don't know how to save money. I have also seen kids take many of the gifts back and use the money for televisions and in my God-daughter's case, windows. How do you like that!! I was wide-eyed when she told me and her mom was mortified. It seemed so unfair to the people who took the time to buy what they thought she would like.Oh well....See MoreHow do you display your glassware?
Comments (16)I have mine in an old French glass door cabinet. I still have to stain a couple of shelves so you will see that some are light in the cabinet, but the display works. Eventually this will all go in the butlers pantry but for now it's handy to have in the parlor next to the dining room. In our house guests get to pick their wine or drink glasses. Everyone has a lot of fun with this. I have several patterns of depression glass, crystal, fancy glass and even glass ware from the 50's and 60's, rarely more than six pieces of each type. I display them on shelves based on their use (champagne, cordials, wine, water, high/low ball and beer) and try to keep the pieces together on the shelf. I will take a couple of pics for you tonight but it's kind of dark in there so if they aren't great I'll come back and do more tomorrow for you if you want....See MoreHow to display figurines?
Comments (17)I have mine on the top two shelves, and they're mixed with other glassware, ect, so the mirror really sets the glass off. My curio is also sitting on a dark wood floor and stands alone like a Grandfather Clock. But..I was born old, when I was little my grandfather had one in his house and I was always drawn to it. He had an antique monkey with symbols he'd get out for me. On my bottom shelf I have little stuffed animals for my grandkids so they'll think they're special too. :) Remember, other things besides figurines can go in a curio to really make it unique....See MoreVery Shallow Cabinet For Glassware?
Comments (13)Hi johnliu. We just did what you are talking about. Our kitchen is so tiny (11' x 9') that we had to find every inch of available space. One of our walls is between the kitchen and a staircase; it's a standard wall made with 2 x 4s. My husband opened up the wall and devised sets of shelves sized to accept Avsikt glass doors from Ikea. The shelves themselves are wood. There will be six of these "cabinets" altogether, three lowers and three uppers. Picture six Avsikt glass doors nestled into a wall. The back side of the wall (the stairside wall) will be sheetrocked. The shelves are not quite finished and have no doors yet, but so far, I love them. They are 5" deep. I'm using them right now to store my glass spice jars at comfortable eye level. The jars are all the same size and have simple labels, so I hope they will look OK behind glass. The shallow width is also becoming useful for other tiny items that hog cabinet space -- short jars of organic honey, cans of tomato paste and roasted peppers, bags of sundried tomatoes, little boxes of tea, anchovies, and boxes of sugar-free Jello. The lower set of shelves holds my 21 old glass mayo jars full of dried goods -- beans, lentils, shitake mushrooms, popcorn, elbow macaroni, raisins, and other items bought in bulk from our local co-op. These jars are all the same size too, they all have white plastic lids, and the contents are sort of colorful, so I hope they won't look too bad either once they get their glass doors. I don't plan to illuminate these shelves; visually, it would be too noisy for my contemporary kitchen. There's a lot of glass stored inside and I have quarry tiles for flooring, so I'll have to be extremely careful not to drop anything. No glass stands a chance against quarry tile. Your idea sounds very workable, and what's more, I think you'll love how it will work for you. Cheers, rc...See Moreyogacat
