Collections: Display That Which You Love...
I know you’ve seen them…they grab your eye and cause you to pause as you browse and drool your way through the wonderful rooms of houzz. Of what do I speak? The delightful, whimsical and so very interesting personal “collections,” artfully displayed in the rooms we love.
I did a little reading about why we love to collect the things we collect, and some folks believe that it’s almost a genetic thing…going back to our hunter-gatherer days. Of course, some folks collect because the item of their affection has real intrinsic value, thus, becoming a true investment that could ultimately be passed down to future generations.
But the collections I see most often are my favorite kind…those that are lovingly collected from the heart either for the sheer love of the piece or for their artistic value when displayed. Not only do the collections capture our interest but they speak volumes about the collectors, themselves...their hobbies, interests and what they value.
Do you have a few blank walls in your home and you just don’t want to hang yet, another picture. Take a look at your collections…consider using them in a beautiful wall or table display. Here’s some inspiration to get you going…

I've adored this picture since the first day I saw it. What a delightful collection and how brilliant to place it in front of a window where it can really be appreciated.
I "heart" hearts so this collection really caught my eye. I love the mix of frames, different backgrounds and sizes...all with a unifying theme.
When displaying your collection, odd numbers like 3 or 5 seem to be more pleasing to the eye. How wonderful that these vintage swimsuits are here to be viewed and enjoyed instead of stuck in a drawer somewhere.
The botanical and bird themed plates are such a wonderful addition to the elephant print. Imagine if the print hung alone over the sofa...wouldn't be near as interesting, would it?
Do you think a professional photographer lives here? I love how the dark cameras are silhouetted against the white shelving. Are you getting any ideas for your collections? :)
This collection of white pottery would not have the same impact if it were spread throughout the house. Gather similar pieces from around your home and place them all together for a really stunning display.
How fun! This collection belongs to Brian Patrick Flynn. You can read more about his playful style in this interview here: https://www.houzz.com/magazine/houzz-interview-decor-demon-stsetivw-vs~50934
Even simple frames can become an interesting focal point when grouped together.
Hats are a wonderful item to collect that won't break the bank. They are so pefect framing out the mirror above the chest. I can just picture someone choosing a hat, and arranging it just so in the mirror as they are heading out the door.
A dazzling, heart stopping display of china and crystal. If you have a large collection, be sure to take that into consideration when building or adding onto your home.
Colorful vintage tins...another beautiful, whimsical collection that makes a wonderful display and proves you don't have to spend a fortune to add interest and decorative touches to your home.
Now here's a unique collection that's bound to be a conversation topic when friends and family come to visit. The description states it's "the owner’s modern-day cabinet of curiosities, brimming with jars filled with preserved aquatic body parts and specimens." Fascinating!
As you can see, virtually any collection can be used as an interesting display in your home. What captures your heart? What do you collect and display in your home?
