Don't you eat with your eyes first? Bad food photos (not cf)

This is currently running on the area above our topics under "make ahead Thanksgiving dishes".

In my opinion, not a single dish looks even appetizing, not even the turkey. The photo emphasis seems more on the serving dishes and high altitude shots than the food.

I agree, they aren't very appealing, and I do eat with my eyes first, and I've noticed a lot of unappealing food pictures lately. I especially noticed the photo of a turkey in the LA Times this morning looked particularly unappealing, until I realized it was upside down! Give me a break. I can't decide if they are lazy or stupid.

I think one of the reasons I like the recipes on the CF is because of the wonderful photographs the CF members post with their recipes. Not that my rendition ever looks as good, but I always add the photo to the recipe when I save it so I know what I'm aiming for.

Don't think the L.A. Times turkey is upside down, just the wings and legs are at odd angles.

I agree the iVillage photos are not appetizing; bad lighting and poor background linen choices made everything look drab. The slaw doesn't look green and fresh and the cranberry sauce does not glow like the jewel that it can be.

OA, pretty cool, the only thing to change is the size of the cells. If you go to the top, and put your curser on one of the lines at the edge of the cell, and drag the curser, it will enlarge the cell so the words don't overflow into the next cell, plus if you have a more wordy description it will now fit. I am glad you knew how to do an attachment of the excel like this, I could not figure out how to "show" it to you all. thanks! PS, the excel in the example that I use is just a guide line for me, you can adjust it to your own personal needs.

Thanks so much for the help! See .. I thought feeding all of those cats out of one big feeder is very wrong too. Thanks for validating one of my concerns. We have the five dogs and there is no way I'd feed them out of one big dish, they all have their own dishes and a few their own eating areas due to when they were strays it caused food aggression issues with other dogs ( not people ). If left to their own being fed out of a large dish, the food aggression dogs would drive the others out and fights would ensue to regain the bowl .. basically everything that's happening to this cat. So, I do blame the people for not getting involved on her behalf. She's an adult cat, my DH ( who had cats as a child ) thinks she's maybe 6 - 8 years old ?? I think right now I'm going to try to get her back into shape, she's eating for me and she seems very content to hang out down here now. As we sat on the porch last night, she hung out on my DH's lap and soaked up the attention. We live in NC and it's been one of the hardest states hit by unemployment, the papers are filled with people giving away their animals. The rescues and humane socities are also filled .. we went through the whole thing with trying to find Daisy ( the Basset my DHbrought home last year ) a home or into rescue and never could, so we just kept her. I'm also going to call and talk to our vet about a dewormer for her, they'll be able to give me an idea how much it would run and if they need to see her first. They are pretty good about giving us a break when the animal is a stray, they did with Daisy and her whole heart worm treatment. Thanks again everyone, hopefully we can get her looking a little better soon :)

If you want to see a guilty dog watch the videos of Denver the guilty dog. Omg they are so funny. He got famous for his YouTube videos and has been on some TV shows. There's no doubt they know, they have long term memory, and they know their name or the sound associated with it. My little one is very good but if there is a kleenex within reach and we are not in sight then it must be shredded immediately because kleenex are the debbil! They must be destroyed! She usually eats tiny bits too to decorate her poo. Lol We know what she has done because she always does it under the little table beside my husband's chair and that's where she goes to hide too. I have never raised a hand to my animals so I don't know what they are afraid of but it's very funny to see it. My Great Danes were terrified of the flyswatter, they of course never had one used on them, but they saw what happened to those bad bad wasps! I swear I knew immediately if there was a wasp in the house, the Danes would all go stampeding into the bedroom and hide. Sure enough I would see the wasp and out comes the dreaded flyswatter! Thanks for those articles from me, too. The CDC still says to use bleach to disinfect, which is different than sanitize. They say that to disinfect hard, non-porous surfaces you need 1/3 cup of regular chlorine bleach per gallons of water, although Clorox recommends using 1/2 cup bleach per 1/2 gallon. For small batches, use 4 teaspoons of regular chlorine bleach and 1 quart of water. Dip a cloth into the mixture, wipe the surface, ALLOWING THE SOLUTION TO CONTACT THE SURFACE FOR 5 MINUTES AND AIR DRY. For food contact surfaces, like countertops and high chair trays, rinse with warm water and air dry after disinfecting. Use it sparingly on stainless steel sinks and surfaces. I use bleach regularly, I have all those white bar mops that I wash and bleach, I use them for everything. I also bleach the white socks and cotton gloves I use/wear on the farm, as well as wash cloths and some white towels. A person should NEVER have white towels on a farm, BTW. Anyway, I use enough that it's never outdated, and I leave it in the original opaque container. The biggest mistake people make, though, is to wipe their counters with the solution but not leave it the required 5 minutes before wiping the residue to dry their surfaces. Obviously they have no foodie or decent photographer working for them. That food didn't make me want to sample it at all.

I found myself looking at the utensils and bowls more than the food in those photos. The food itself didn't look awful, it just wasn't anything I'd lick the screen over.

Of course, this is kind of the pot and the kettle because my food photos are nothing to sing about. :)

They look pretty good to me! I take pictures with the camera on my phone lately, just because it's handy!

I use to do cooking for photography for several magazines and it takes a lot of special effort and techniques to make food look delicious in a picture; many times the food isn't even eatable once it's done being messed with. I'd say this work wasn't done by someone who was a food photographer.... just took photos of meal-ready foods.

I also went forward to their "Thanksgiving disasters to avoid"- some of them were pretty pitiful. One family that refuses to travel on Thanksgiving because the first time they did so, their dishwasher pipe broke while they were out and flooded the kitchen. That could happen any day. Another woman who doesn't "risk" making her own pumpkin pies because the first time she did she used too much Karo syrup that acted as a laxative. So get a new Karo syrup free recipe, fer cryin out loud.

Actually, Westelle, the photography was done by food professionals. She is a food stylist and photographer as is her husband. She has books out and an impressive Gourmet credential. I looked her up on Google.
Probably didn't have much time or something.

I got dizzy looking at the pictures that were taken from directly above. The cranberry sauce looks better because it is shown in perspective, as one might really see it. The main problem with the pictures is the camera angle - not sophisticated at all! Even the turkey, which is somewhat better, is shown straight on instead of from an angle. She obviously didn't take very many shots, or else she would have had something better to choose. Many of the photographers were are much better, including Ann and Diana. I've done professional product photography myself (for furniture), but Ann's food photos are better than mine.
