New This Week: 3 Eye-Catching Laundry Rooms
Just because you have high-tech appliances doesn’t mean your laundry room has to look like something from outer space
Incorporating a sense of style around modern washing and drying machines can be tricky. What goes with something that looks as if it belongs on a space station? The following laundry rooms show how a range of styles — contemporary, farmhouse and transitional — can work for your home.
2. Farmhouse
Designer: Phoebe Howard
Location: Nashville, Tennessee
Size: 83 square feet (7.7 square meters)
Homeowners’ request: Lots of natural light, storage, counter space and a utility sink
Special features: Wall-to-wall windows on two sides; farmhouse style; free-standing sink; Ann Sacks tile
Designer secret: “The secret to this space was building a countertop over the washer and dryer,” designer Phoebe Howard says. “By doing this, we were able to triple the amount of counter space.”
“Uh-oh” moment: “The challenge was fitting all of the needs for storage, counter space and a sink in this small space,” Howard says. “We solved this by using a free-standing sink and making a fabric skirt to cover the underside of the sink to provide additional hidden storage.”
Also on the team: Castle Custom Homes
Floor tile: Pierre Noir, Ann Sacks; wall tile: Chisai in Putty and Smoke, Ann Sacks; sink: Kohler; appliances: Whirlpool

3. Transitional
Designer: Amy Peltier of A. Peltier Interiors
Location: San Marino, California
Size: 54 square feet (5 square meters); 6 by 9 feet
Homeowners’ request: Storage, organization and durability with a palette of blues and neutrals
Special features: Custom built-in mudroom cabinets with bench; blue-and-gray mosaic tile backsplash; travertine floor; window for natural light; quartz countertops
Designer secret: “We took the laundry sink out of the laundry room and put a small farmhouse sink right next door in the bathroom,” says designer Amy Peltier. “This was our ‘aha’ moment. It cleared up space for more storage and counter space that was desperately needed.”
Splurges and savings: Peltier saved on the floor to splurge on the accent tile, which added “interest and contrast,” she says.
Also on the team: Dahl Architects; Russ Kraus (general contractor)
Backsplash tile: Oceanside Glasstile; floor tile: travertine in Durango

Designer: Sophie Mastrokostas of SeventyNine Construction
Location: Toronto
Size: 66 square feet (6.1 square meters); 6 by 11 feet
Homeowner’s request: A simple modern room with an accent of yellow and three necessities — pantry, counter space and sink
Special features: Glossy yellow cabinets; white quartz countertops; sink; black decor letters that spell “Laundry”
‘Uh-oh’ moment: “When the walls went up, the homeowner felt that we wouldn’t be able to fit even a washer in the room,” says designer Sophie Mastrokostas. “In the end, we not only squeezed it all in without taking away any space from the rest of the second floor, but everyone loves the space.”
