the coarser the materials are the slower they'll go, and cold weather slows things right down, sometimes to a standstill .... 12-15°C would get more action

in the fall I make sure there's lots of partly decomposed material in the bin [large] and cover the top with some insulating stuff like cardboard, and just ignore them till spring

1 kg of food in a bin with 1 kg of worms is far too much. Especially that it only three months old. It is likely to go bad and get smelly.

And, as Squeeze points out, things will slow down in cold weather. I agree to leave it alone till spring. Just check it doesn't dry out.

Have you buried your food into the bin surface? I find that larger scraps buried into the bin get eaten much faster than those left on the surface. In my opinion, your food quantity does not seem too large. Many folks suggest that a bin can process a weight of food equal to the weight of worms each week. Another benefit of burying the food is that the composting process, gentle as it may be in a worm bin, still warms the material a bit.

Hi vagas! I believe the secret is the temperature. When the thermometer goes down all activity slows down microbial and the worms as well as any other composters in the mix. So as stated above slowly raise the ambiant temp to the comfort zone even higher than above to 17-23 deg C =62-74 deg F.

Please remember that if the worms like it... they will eat their bedding. making them slower to eat the food you put in.

And yes! watch the temp too, cold and they eat a lot less!

Worms don't like fresh food, It has to be compost first for them to accept it. What I do is blend all the scraps together, including egg shells, put it in a separate bin with moss or hay in it for a couple of weeks. I then proceed to feed the worms checking out that they like what I put in.

And what IS the "formula" - that worms will eat their weight or half their weight in a day or a week? I think it is closer to a week. When I had mini-bins I would feed them every other day but now that I have them (from 2 minis) in one 10-gallon Rubbermaid I feed them once a week. I fill a gallon plastic bag during the week with my tea bags, egg shells, veggie & fruit scraps so I think that is a couple pounds. . . I'm sure I have at least a pound of worms.

I think it is possible that "all conditions being perfect" a worm could eat it's own weight in material in a day. Trick is, how often is everything perfect and the worms actually eat the microbes that are digesting the scraps and bedding more than eating the scraps themselves. I find that a bedding like shredded corrugated cardboard tends to turn into castings with very little food added.

Anyway, the temp is probably what has slowed down the worms there and since it isn't a very old worm farm the worms are probably still taking a fair bit of time to consume things in the first place.

I found that it took a long time for my first 2# of worms to really get going but now it seems that I will need to be feeding them much more if I want the herd to keep growing.
