i saw a soil scientist speak the other night and he said that the big earthworms we have here came over from europe during the past 400 years. they're not indigenous. that was surprise number 1. number 2 is that, while good in home gardens, in other areas worms can actually aerate the soil too much, i guess causing too much oxygen to enter the soil and thus burning up nutrients too fast.

what i don't get is that, tho i've gardened organically in this spot for 14 years, and have composted and mulched and green manured and not rototilled every year, i have VERY few earthworms. why??!! i don't think this is necessarily bad, because my vegetables are almost always problem-free and healthy. but whenever i read about how abundant earthworms are a sign of healthy soil i wonder why i don't have them. i think my soil is healthy.
