Please help with dining room lights

I have spent a lot of time on the kitchen forum, but have never posted here. Now my kitchen is done--as well as the rest of the house--and we moved back in a couple months ago. I have a very simple chandelier in my dining room and I need two sconces to match. They are on both sides of the window. Not really a big deal, but I am paralyzed. I don't know whether to try to get something similar to the 'water glass' on the chandelier or if I can/should go in a different direction. The chandelier doesn't have any kind of matching sconces available. Below are pictures. Note: the dining room table and chairs are on their way out and I intend to get a rug when the new ones arrive. Also, no landscaping has been done, so ignore the view outside the window. Thanks.

Why are there going to be sconces on both side of the windows? Sconces are usually put in low light areas. Wouldn't the sconces limit the choice of window treatments?

Yes, I would get sconces for the room to match or coordinate, rather than going for something completely different.

I don't know why. But they are already there (you can see the metal plate next to the window in the picture) so I have to put them in. Window treatments are something I have avoided thinking about, but really have to.

Hmmm. It's amazing to me that this is the only fixture that has given me this much trouble. I've been holding most of my fixture order until I made this decision and thought there was no time like the present... I may have to stew on this overnight. Thanks to everyone for your input. It sounds like really, no matter which fixture I choose, it will "be ok". And none of them are extremely pricey (when compared to the rest of the house, :) ) so if I eventually find the "perfect" fixture, I'll just switch it out. oruborisThanks for the link to brightspot.com. It's the scale of the lamps that you need to concentrate on the most. I've found that most homeowners tend to purchase lamps that are too short/small. I use 28"-30" as my guide. I rarely use shorter than 28" unless maybe in a bedroom or for an occasional table, and over 30" starts to look odd in most homes. If you're looking at a lamp in person, rather than online (which has the measurements) just measure from the top of the shade down to the table. Also, purchasing inexpensive end tables and lamps first can really help change the look of a room, while you're saving up for the more expensive items (sofa, nice coffee table). Here's a before/after of a living room I did for a homeowner, where all I added were lamps, end tables and throw pillows (just reworked her other items). The end tables I used are really great, they work with a lot of furniture styles, plus they have a shelf and they're less than $100. I use them with a lot of clients! Since end tables don't get a lot of abuse, a "cheaper" one is a real budget saver. Great End Table As you can see in the Before, this furniture is large and overstuffed. A too small lamp would look silly. Using the above linked end tables and 30" lamps: You can use an end table like those (they're 24" high) and the proper size lamp, and it will work with just about any sofa you choose. Also, when choosing throw cushions I would get rid of the two red cushions on your sofa, and replace with a neutral. Maybe throw in a lumbar on one of your two chairs. And here's a room (while we were rearranging furniture) where the homeowner's furniture was not oversized/overstuffed. As you can see, these same end tables come up higher on her sofa, but still work. I can't remember how tall these lamps were, probably around 27"-28".

I would remove those sconce plates. You need that space so you can pull back drapes.

No you do not have to put them in just because the builder put them there.

From what you say, it sounds like this is new construction. I would question the placement of the sconces with the builder. Are they on the blueprints? Were they suppose to go on the other wall over the buffet instead? Workmen often get things mixed up.

Even if they do appear on the blueprints in that spot, I would make the decision not to install sconces flanking the big picture windows.

It should not be difficult to pull the wires and put them on the other wall. Then patch.

sally, I agree; I think sconces beside the windows will get in the way & will not be effective there. They would look good & give more light on the buffet wall. Since you probably will not be able to find something with the same glass, consider a definite change, such as frosted glass. However, if you know the manufacturer you could check their site to see if they used the glass in sconces. I have seen many rooms where sconces & chaneliers do not match.
