Favorite squash variety

I just came from our local pumpkin farm, where they have dozens upon dozens of squash varieties to choose from. Every year we buy an assortment, and stock up on our favorites.

The Sweet Dumpling squash is always good, so I buy them whenever they're available. Last year we tried a Sibley, which I really liked, but this year they didn't have them.

New varieties we're trying this year:
-Blue Magic
-Ambercup
-Sweetmeat
-Grey Ghost

This lead me to wonder what other varieties other food lovers might recommend. Do you have a favorite squash?

Kabocha is my hands down favorite. I tried growing the sweet dumpling squash one year and wasn't impressed. Wasn't sweet at all. Maybe it was the variety or the season--I should try growing it again because I know a lot of people who love it.

Anyway, Kabocha grows good for me and it's always yummy.

I use mostly OP seeds. They're cheaper and easier for me to get. In your first year, you will have alot of start-up expenses, so watch your expenses or you will find out that you haven't made money and may get discouraged. My veggies are: Zucchini-Black Beauty, does just fine and only $11/pound. Peppers, still uncertain at this time Yellow Squash-Early Prolific, does great, actually TOO well for my market. $10/lb Butternut Squash-Waltham, $13/lb Acorn Squash, Table Queen, $11/bl Spaghetti Squash, $19.00/lb, higher price this year. Last year 1/2 lb produced 22 bushel of good squash. Tomato-Big Beef, last year not so good, previous year-picked 1,000 lbs per week for 6 weeks off of approximately 400 plants. The weight is for good, non-split red ripe tomatoes. Tomato-Yellow Pear, don't plant alot they will produce FOREVER, it seems. Tomato-Black Cherry, very good tasting and producing, customers love them once they try them. Perfect size to offer samples without needing to cut them. Eggplant- Black Beauty, eggplant doesn't do well for me usually, but this one is the only one that I can grow. $3.85/oz Cukes, I don't have good luck with Straight 8 even if the seeds are cheaper. Pickles, I found National Pickling the best one for me. As you can see, I plant alot of winter squash. I can plant and almost forget them. Sometimes we get squash borers, but that is rare. Plus while they are growing, I am picking tomatoes and zucchini. I also have strawberries, Ozark Beauty is a very good tasting berry, also have Earliglow and Jewel, Earliglow is new for us, but the Jewel was very tasty and productive for their first year. We planted them in the fall of 2008 and picked in May/June 2009.

Paula, FYI, a lot of those ornamental peppers reseed for me. That's one thing about them that I really like. Dody, That should be my slogan "So many choices, so little room", and I should cross stitch it onto a sampler to hang in my potting shed. Charlie, You're welcome. Ask and ye shall receive. Going through the list and researching all those varieties might take you a little while, but it is something to do in the "off season". Chandra, Oh, no, that's not the list of what I'm growing in 2011. It is just the list of my personal favorites. They've become favorites because they tolerate our weather and produce well. After I posted the list of OSU-recommended varieties, Charlie wanted to know what it is that people "really" plant though, so I posted the list so he'd know what I, for one, like to plant. I mean no disrespect towards the OSU-recommended varieties, or the varieties recomended by any other university, like Texas A&M, for example. Even when I lived in Texas, I looked at their list and then made my own choices. While the varieties recommended by the various universities for their areas have been researched, often the research is done more on hybrids than OPs, and often productivity or shelf life gets as much attention as flavor, for example. Remember that university research sometimes is geared more towards commercial farmers than home gardeners. So, I try to choose varieties for our specific home garden that tolerate our weather, produce a worthwhile yield and also, those whose flavor we prefer. Where to find them? Almost everything I listed should be available from one or two or more of the following online sources, or at least they have been in the past. In a couple of cases, there's only one or two sources, and I've listed it below. The websites are my best guess and if I'm off by a letter or two, you can find them by googling. Victory Seeds (victoryseed.com) Willhite Seed (willhiteseed.com) Southern Exposure Seed Exchange (southernexposure.com) Seed Savers Exchange (seedsavers.net) Baker Creek Rare Seeds (rareseeds.com) Totally Tomatoes (totallytomatoes.com) Tomato Growers Supply Company (tomatogrowers.com) Ramapo tomato is available directly from Rutgers/NJAES. Moreton is also available there. I believe Little Lucy okra is available from a couple of places, and one of them is Park Seed. Baby Bubba is available from Burpee. Moreton and Supersonic tomato seed are available from Harris Seed. I get seed potatoes locally, from organic grocery stores in the DFW metroplex and from Ronningers, which has a new website you can find by googling. I'm not sure the new website is completely functional yet. I get my onion plants from Dixondale Farms and recommend them highly. If you are in the OKC-Norman metro area or in the Tulsa metro area, you may find all those same varieties locally, but I can't find all of them here in southern OK. Almost all the tomato and pepper varieties I listed are available from either Tomato Growers Supply or Totally Tomatoes if you don't find them on the websites of the other seed companies. I usually plant radishes and nasturtiums along the edge of my squash row and that does help with the squash bugs. Last year I didn't and they were awful. For borers I've found that silver plastic mulch really does seem to help deter them. I haven't had any serious problems with borers since I started using that, but the squash bugs have made up for it. I'd be afraid to try catmint, though; isn't it really invasive? When I've used row covers the squash plants got so big that it was difficult to keep them contained, and Parthenon produced almost no squash for me.

Sally, everyone seems to like this recipe. It's more soft and squishy and kind of sweet, instead of crusty. I brush the tops with melted butter when they are done. I use the bread machine to make the dough, just put in the wet ingredients, then the dry, be sure to check after it starts kneading to make sure you don't need to add flour. Sometimes the squash is "jucier" than other times. I've used canned pumpkin chunks, mashed with a fork, and frozen squash puree, they work fine too. When the machine finishes the "dough" cycle I remove the dough, shape it, let it rise and bake in the oven. I usually roll the dough out and cut it with a biscuit cutter. You can also make these with sugar, white or brown, but I like local honey in them and I often use the dough to make cinnamon rolls, then drizzle them with maple or apple cider glaze. Butternut Squash Dinner Rolls 1 tablespoon active dry yeast 1/4 cup warm water (110ÃÂ° to 115ÃÂ°) 1 teaspoon sugar 2/3 cup warm fat-free milk (110ÃÂ° to 115ÃÂ°) 1 cup mashed cooked butternut squash 1/3 cup butter, melted 1/3 cup honey Ã¢ÂÂ¢1 teaspoon salt Ã¢ÂÂ¢2 cups whole wheat flour Ã¢ÂÂ¢2 to 2-1/2 cups all-purpose flour In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Add sugar; let stand for 5 minutes Stir in the milk, squash, butter, brown sugar and salt. Add whole wheat flour. beat on medium speed for 2 minutes. Stir in enough all-purpose flour to form a soft dough. Turn onto a floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic, about 10 minutes. Place in a bowl coated with cooking spray, turning once to coat top. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour. Punch dough down and turn onto a floured surface; divide into 20 pieces. Shape each piece into a ball. Place 2 in. apart on baking sheets coated with cooking spray. I grew squash semi-successfully this year for my mother and sister as well as myself - 12 hills and 40+ squash. They started flowering and fruiting late this rainy rainy year.

Delicatas which look like elongated sweet dumplings.

Red kuris, sunshines and nutty delica which all seem to be in the kabocha/buttercup category - dry sweet and store well.

Finally I grew a bush butternut and have 3 or 4 semi-ripe squashes.

I am happy with all the varieties except the last one. I wanted small or medium sized sweet squash. My sister and family fell in love with delicata lasr year. My mom is a big fan of the kuri.

I like the orange squashes - butternut, acorn and Dickenson (Libby's pumpkin squash)

Slice them in half, bake them, and top with butter and brown sugar.

Kabocha here, too.
They grow really well here.
I love using the puree for smoothies and pies, quick breads and cookies.

I really like Confection from Johnny's Selected Seeds. It is their own hybrid Kabocha type. Food writer Leslie Land turned me on to it. I also really like Futsu Black, a Japanese moschata type. It grew really well for me in Maine this past summer. It is a good keeper. The Futsu Black tends to be a drier squash than the kabocha types.

I've been saving more and more of my own seeds, so I lean toward the open pollinated varieties.

My favorite is still Waltham Butternut, no matter whether I'm eating hybrids or OP varieties. I just like it. I also like Hubbard but the squashes cross pollinate so readily that I have resorted to choosing one variety per year to grow. It's nearly always Butternut (which also makes great dinner rolls and passable pies).

I've just started growing them again and have a variety but no favorite yet. I like them all. Roasting, but no butter or brown sugar....roast face down, long and slow. I want to try them on their own discovering their own flavor. Next year i will pay more attention for my climate and try varieties suggested from here and the garden forum postings.
I have a pile in the garage. Looking forward to picking one randomly, roasting, and making up a dish or a variety of dishes.

I have the best luck growing Sunshine kabocha and an Italian heirloom, Marina di Chioggia. Short season and both are tasty. I keep trying bush delicata, Sweet Dumpling and butternut, but I'm better off stopping at the upick for those. I grab Carnivals whenever I see them...they seem a bit less stringy than the parent Sweet Dumpling. Pretty, too.

The last year I had any size to my garden I tried Lakota--an old, old variety-- loved it-- nice and dry, nutty yet a bit sweet. Now I buy from a local farm stand-- buttercup & amber cup are my favorite but it's hard to find them small enough for just the two of us so I use a lot of sweet dumpling & the stand I buy from uses Waltham butternut which is a great keeper . I buy acorn for my daughter but don't really care for it myself.
