My Sofa Is Gone!

My antique one, that is. I posted a while ago that I was having trouble deciding what to do with it. I finally relented & allowed DH to take it to our favorite charity. He told me I made someone's day, because several people in the store just loved it & wanted to buy it when it came in the door.

I also sent away my old iron bed. We had a full size for years & finally switched to a queen. We had intended to put it in our second bedroom so we could have a guest room. But we had decided that we needed to structure our home for the way we live. How often would we be having overnight guests? Not very often. I also purged several boxes of books, clothes, & misc. household stuff. It does feel good to be free of it!

I'm sure you DID make someone's day! Once you really start having the items in your home tailored to how you actually live, I'm sure the spaces will become so much more comfortable. (don't forget to take your deducation)

It was hard for me to arrange our home based on our needs. We were doing a whole house remodel and I know how we live in the house doesn't fit the "norm." I'll just worry about resale in 15 years.

Richard, I hope you don't mind if I take on answering your question. I have gone through what seems like the same from your description years ago to four of my stored trees. The first one I just threw it out thinking it would not be worth keeping anymore since the whole trunk at the base was striped of its bark by the mice. A area about two inches wide around the whole trunk. A little while after I did that I came up with an idea that I decided to try. The other three trees had the same damage done to them. What I did was to cut a branch from each of the trees and then stripped from each of them pieces of bark long enough to reach across the damaged area. I used a razor blade knife to do this. I carefully scraped the bark from the areas above and below the areas I wanted to bridge with the fresh bark I striped from their branches exposing the light green coloring just below the bark. One of them was even below the level of the ground. Then I taped the three 1/2 inch wide strips to each tree at first just to hold them in place with just plain scotch tape later I covered it all with duct tape. To my surprise it worked. Near the end of the summer months I removed the tape from the trees and to my surprise they had all grown new bark completely around the effected area. In fact those same trees are part of the photos I posted above. I was sorry that I thre out the first one. Since then I have always wrapped the trunk of my trees with heavy-duty foil and I leave the foiled covered bottom of their trunks exposed and tie up the blankets that I use covering them hoping that it keeps the critters from getting under the blankets and into the trees. I know mice can chew threw foil but so far I have not have a problem. Maybe its just luck but I have been using that method on all the young fruit and other trees I have planted on my property.. I live close to a very large field and a woody area so there are many varmints I have to deal with. Groundhogs are one of the worst. Hope you understand what I have just described to you and the damage to your trees was just at the base of the trunk and if you try it it works for you. Just my two cents worth. Good luck!!! Lou

Justgotabeme, Your advice on a nice display with background was good, although I didn't do my wording on the background. After I took the word "Quality" out of my ad I had zero money order scammers and I am now convinced there are key word triggers for the scam artists. My sofa has gone to its new home and I got close to my asking price. I do think the display with nice background brought the real buyers in.

Julie, I had the same NFMart experience you did. I was completely overwhelmed by the store and DH ended up talking me into a soft Broyhill. DH..."Why are we here if were not going to buy anything?" After 4yrs the wood frame squeaks and it's so uncomfortable I'm always changing sitting positions. Have you been to Crowley Furniture in OP? I think they carry mid-line sofas but their service is excellent. The two sales people that helped me were decorators. It was great to bounce ideas off them, as well as get help with the multitude of fabric choices. If you're adventurous you could try T. Ormans. They advertise high end furniture at wholesale prices. Another overwhelming place for me. Tons of furniture spread out over a 70,000 sq ft building. I think you really have to know what you want before you go. They're only open Thursdays, Fridays & Saturdays. I do think I'll visit NFM again. Next time I'll go during the week and be armed with a list of brands worthy to look at. I remember the back of the store had an area of higher quality furniture that wasn't prowled by hungry salespeople. I love equestrian stuff...goes back to my days of being horse happy as a child. I have a number of horse statues around yet and had an equestrian theme in DH's study at the old house...even had my old helmet and riding crop propped up on the book case. There is something about how the fur on a horse so beautifully shows off its muscles and bone structure that make them such wonderful creatures to look at. Note the Antoine-Louis Barye horse sculpture on the mantel.

When we downsized our living quarters, we got rid of the sofas and ALSO the diningroom table.

did youever notice how only a couple people ever sit on the sofa? We use two recliners and two wing back chairs and a wooden rocker.

the thing I miss the most is the diningroom table. Not because we ate at it. We didn't. It's just the idea that we should have a table. Everbody has a table, so we should too. We didn't have room for it and it just collected STUFF.

We have an open floor plan with an eating counter dividing the kitchen from the great(?) room. We have very little company for meals so it made no sense to keep it. but I still wish I had room for a table

DH said they were raving in the store about the beautiful upholstery. I was thinking about how much time I spent going through fabric samples to find the perfect upholstery to match my Aubusson rug. It was difficult, but I'm glad I did it.

We kept the two chairs that match it & may have them reupholstered later. We can use them for now. We're going to move the den sofa into the living room & use it until we get a new one. When we're ready to redocorate the room, we're getting a slipcovered sofa.

my sympathies and congratulations!

I know it's hard to let go of something like that, esp. if you've actually invested creativity in it (and not just DREAMED of investing creativity in it, which is all I can do, LOL!)

It's just the idea that we should have a table.

When my son was in 6th grade he had an unmarried teacher who also had no table. Somehow the two facts became intertwined in the the kids' minds. One day she mentioned that she was having a table delivered. One kid said, "Oh, you must be getting married." The teacher was confused/embarrassed because, in fact, she was engaged but hadn't announced it to the students yet.

We couldn't live without a table. We literally live around the thing. I've hated when I only had an eating bar. Need a table and chairs to feel comfortable.
