Pumpin Shortage - I know where it is!

I delivered cases of tomatoes today for my mother and sister to can. My mother has a new Super Walmart a few blocks away and needed coffee. I had mentioned the "pumpkin shortage" to her and said I would look for it. I saw the Libby Brand and the display was at least the size of 2 California King size beds!

When I was leaving I drove around the back side of the store as there is a shortcut to the developement my Mom lives in. There was a huge semi truck at the loading dock and I saw pallets of Libbys pumpkin products. The guy was out of his truck so I drove over and said, I heard there was a pumpkin shortage but it appears you have plenty.

He replied, this is the craziest thing. I've been a trucker for Walmart for years. I've never delivered an entire truck load of a single food item - and I've delivered 3 truck loads of canned pumpkin just in the last 10 days.

Walmart has snatched up all the pumpkin!!!!!

Also, the can says Calabaza - which is squash. But they've been using Blue Hubbards for years as canned pumpkin. Both of these squashes produce high volumes of thick fleshed sweet squash - unlike pie pumpkins which can fluctuate in flavor due to the weather and sometimes have poor production rate.

Yep - it is everywhere now. All my local stores have it and I grabbed 10 cans of the 2cup size. That should last the year LOL!

I agree with Sue. IF there is a shortage of plants, I suspect it is because more people are planting food crops this year. It doesn't take an economist to figure out that high gas prices, floods where farmers live, and other natural disasters are going to mean higher food prices for us all this year. My heart breaks for the folks in the Mississippi Delta (the poorest counties in the country, I am told). Very many of them depend on their gardens to feed their families and they cannot expect the flood waters to recede until mid summer. Who knows when the ground will be dry enough to work? I am taking the best care of my garden I can this year in the hopes that I will have plenty to share. Our church is sending groups of workers to help every week.

First, a real estate lawyer is probably a great way to turn a $2,000 escrow shortage into a $2,000 escrow shortage and a $450 lawyer bill. You need to find out why you were short. In the end, escrows are pretty simple and the report should be easy to read. Your escrow account pays for certain things authorized by you in closing. The two most popular things are (1) property taxes and (2) insurance, but some banks will add HOA fees to the list. You will get a statement from the bank that shows the demands made on the escrow account and the payments into the account. If both of these are correct and there isn't an overpayment, then you owe the higher amount. As mentioned above, many times the shortage gets doubled in the year following the shortage as they have to make up the shortage from the previous year and prepare for the higher bill the next year. There are often hiccups in the first few years as timing differences get sorted out. Often the property taxes have weird due dates but these typically stabilize in year 3. After that check your property insurance and tax rate to see if there has been an adjustment.

I'm doing limited shopping. Costco twice in 6 months, Target only curbside, food co-op every six weeks, Farmer's Market every 2 weeks and Trader Joes every 2 or 3 weeks. A local high-end grocery every 10 days or so. Haven't found paper products that I prefer, because I used to buy them at Target but they won't deliver or do curbside and I'm not going inside. Someone posted (here?) about Staples having TP, so I looked at they had the Scott 1 ply I need for my septic, but they had their own house brand that looks identical for much less $$, so I bought 2 packs of 20 rolls. Delivered in 1 day for free. They also had some sanitizing wipes (their brand) and a free hand sanitizer if you spent more than $30. I have NEVER been able to make their website work for me, so I ended up in a chat, then a phone convo, but it all worked out. I should be good for many months.

Yes, you can make starter with grapes. Or whole grain. Or any number of things. Wild yeast is on them. It's all the same kind of yeast. The bread doesn't have to taste different if you use wild yeast (sourdough starter), unless you're trying for a yeasty taste. Commercial yeast is a different strain than wild. Regular bread will taste the same if you make it right. The real issue with using wild yeast is that the method is different and it takes a lot longer, and getting a good rise out of a new starter isn't guaranteed. All over the 'net, however, all kinds of people (especially young ones) are catching yeast and baking breads both sour and not from it.

My cousin brought me some organic pumpkin from Ohio today and I looked at the label out of curiousity to see if it was actually squash or pumpkin. The label says "certified organic pumpkin". I had no idea they could label squash as pumpkin. Very interesting!

A food product can be called anything. The list of ingredients must contain correct information.

No pumpkin shortage here. They're just early. I went to Tim's Pumpkin Patch (maybe 5 miles from my house) and picked up 4 huge pumpkins for $8. I went to the apple orchard(the orchards are maybe 20 minutes away) and picked up 2 more pumpkins and 4 winter squashes all for $8. Nope, I'm not gonna believe there's a shortage!

Tracey, I'm betting that your can is not Libby...

I buy an organic canned pumpkin, It's under the Farmer's Market Foods brand. They also have sweet potato puree in cans.

Becky, I am with you. However, last year around Thanksgiving, I couln't find canned pumpkin anywhere. Meanwhile, I drove past pumpkins rotting in the fields off of 20. Made no sense. I need to learn how to do it myself.

Pumpkins take a hit with an early frost and start to rot. Thicker skinned Hubbard squash can withstand a harsh frost before penetrating the skin. That's why canned pumpkin has been made with squash for years.

Today I baked a Sugar Baby pie pumpkin, a small Hubbard squash, A Sunshine Squash (kaboucha hybrid) and a Blue Kaboucha. The Sugar Baby pumpkin was no where near as flavorful or as sweet as the others. There is a reason Libby, Del Monte and Green Giant starting substituting squash for pumpkin years ago.

I found that most of my recipes do just fine with sweet potato or butternut squash in place of pumpkin, but Makayla's pumpkin patch did really well this year. I don't know how I'm going to keep them until Halloween, though, it's supposed to be in the 80s next week!

I'm canning some myself this year, because I haven't been able to find canned pumpkin (or anything that passes itself off as pumpkin) since the holidays last year. So, we'll see how it goes, but I have LOTS.

Also a ton (approximately, LOL) of butternut squash, acorn squash and sweet potatoes....

The hard squashes are on sale here at MagicLand ( my local little farmer's market0 for $5 a half bushel. I counted, that's approximately 14 acorn or butternut. I also bought one little "sugar pie" pumpkin, just to see if it's better than my field pumpkins.

I have just been trying to figure out why pumpkins are a Fall thing-- they seem to ripen in the summer just like everything else. Ours started rotting on the vine weeks ago!

It's not so bad to make pumpkin puree out of a pumpkin. The thing is to find a pumpkin with a hard shell-- that way you can just bake or boil the pieces and scoop the flesh out with a spoon.
