What to do with 2 liters of Ginger Ale?

I bought a 2-liter bottle of ginger ale because I wanted to use the bottle to make the fruit fly trap. I am about to pour the soda down the sink but suddenly it occurs to me that some of you may have creative ways to use the soda instead of pouring it away. Any suggestions?

Well, you could drink it, or you could do what I do and mix half ginger ale and half white wine and then I can actually drink the wine, LOL.

You could have a big party and make punch.

PARTY VODKA PUNCH

Cake of ice
Pineapple
Maraschino cherries
Strawberries
Concentrate orange juice
Concentrate lemon juice
2 c. sugar
1 1/2 qts. vodka
Club soda
Ginger ale
Sliced oranges, lemons & limes

Freeze a container of ice to fit into the punch bowl. Add maraschino cherries or strawberries and pineapple chunks to freeze. For color, add grenadine. Make 1 quart orange juice from concentrate and 1 quart lemon juice from frozen concentrate.

Mix 2 cups sugar and add enough water to dissolve. Heat until sugar is thoroughly dissolved. When cooled, add to fruit juices. (The dissolved sugar is the secret of the punch.) Add 1 1/2 quarts vodka, depending upon the number of guests.

Just before serving, add: 1 quart club soda, 1 quart ginger ale. Slice oranges, lemons and limes and add to the punch bowl. Use maraschino cherries or strawberries for each serving.

Or......you could use it to marinate chicken or pork:

Pork Chops with GingerAle Marinade

1 cup ginger ale
1/2 cup soy sauce
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon dry mustard
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
2 tablespoons brown sugar
3 to 5 dashes Tabasco sauce
6 3/4-inch thick pork loin chops

Place marinade ingredients in a zip-top plastic bag. Squeeze to combine. Add pork chops and marinate several hours or overnight.

Heat grill on high for 5 minutes. Place chops on the grill and cook for 5 minutes per side or until internal temperature of 145 degrees is reached for medium or 160 degrees for well done when instant-read meat thermometer is inserted in center of meat. Total cooking time should be 10 to 12 minutes.

Makes 6 servings.

You could bake a pound cake (although I like lemon better):

Makes 10 to 12 servings
Recipe from Mr. Food's Easy Cooking

2 1/3 cups sugar
1 cup (2 sticks) butter or margarine, softened
1/3 cup shortening
5 eggs
2 teaspoons lemon extract
3 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 cup (6 ounces) ginger ale

Preheat oven to 325Â°F. Coat a Bundt pan with nonstick cooking spray.

In a medium bowl, cream sugar, butter, and shortening. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add lemon extract; mix well. Add flour and ginger ale, alternately. Pour batter into the pan and bake 75 minutes, or until a wooden toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let cake cool 20 to 30 minutes; remove from pan to cool completely.

I keep cans on hand for upset stomachs, but I've been known to just drink it and then I have to buy more for the tummies.

I made a pork loin marinated in ginger ale once, overnight. It was fab. You can reduce the leftover gingerale to make a sauce.

Hi Daniel, I think it would be easier to figure out why the lettuce is not doing well inside and then correct that. Trying to transplant lettuce outside this early during a winter in which we're having recurring ice/snow storms and below-average temperatures would be less likely to be successful even with the use of 2-liter plastic bottles as cloches. To grow lettuce indoors under lights, you need to keep the lights so close to the lettuce plants that the lights and lettuce almost touch. Having the lights any higher than that will cause the lettuce to stretch and get leggy, which is what I assume you're referring to when you describe your lettuce as 'wimpy'. I have found that lettuce grown indoors benefits from having the grow lights left on 24/7, which is not true of most other vegetable seedlings grown indoors. I generally give most indoor seedings between 12 and 16 hours of light indoors but lettuce needs more. If you can, try to keep the room where your light shelf is slightly cool....maybe around 60 degrees. Lettuce grown indoors under lights can grow too fast too quickly in a very warm room. As far as transplanting lettuce outside in the cold winter weather and covering the plant with 2-liter bottle cloches, my best guess is that it is unlikely to be very successful. You'd have better success with a larger cold frame or a low tunnel (PVC supports bent into U-shaped hoops and covered with clear 4 to 6 mm plastic) that would shelter the young lettuce plants from the wind, frosts and freezing temps. The problem with plastic cloches is that they can be blown off the plants by a strong wind and plastic doesn't hold heat very well. You can use 2-liter bottles and milk jugs as a cloche over seeds that have been winter-sown and they usually work quite well for that purpose because they protect the plants from wind insects and animals so the seeds can sprout. They also help trap a little heat and that might keep the seed/soil slightly warmer than unprotected seed. With lettuce that already has sprouted and is growing, though, the 2-liter bottle cloches are likely to hold too little heat at night to keep the lettuce plants above 25-28 degrees and they are likely to have that greenhouse effect occurring on sunny days. As you lettuce grows in size, any part of the lettuce that touches the plastic cloches during times when temps are below about 28 degrees likely will suffer cold damage. A small cold frame is better than no cold frame. However the issue with any sort of season extender is that small ones are harder to heat/cool evenly and it is much easier to keep the temps at the right temperature with larger ones. The same thing is true of greenhouses....very small ones can overheat much more quickly than larger ones. I personally wouldn't attempt to put a heater of any sort in a cold frame if any part of the cold frame is combustible for rather obvious reasons. To make a long story short, I'd just say that my husband and son both are certified professional firefighters( DH is also a certified peace officer and actually works as a public safety officer) and we all three belong to our local volunteer fire department---and you simply would never believe how many structure fires are started by small heaters in confined spaces including small dog houses and poultry coops. Even heaters with thermostats (and thermostats can malfunction too) can heat up a small area fairly quickly and cause combustible material to burst into flame. I asked my son his opinion of putting a heater in a 3' x 3' x 1' cold frame and he said he considered it a risky move and he wouldn't do it. If I was in your situation right now and keeping the young lettuce plants indoors under grow lights were not an option, I'd put them in a unheated cold frame or in a hot bed (essentially a deeper cold frame where the lowest layer of 'soil' is fresh manure that releases heat as it decomposes). If in a cold frame, I'd spray paint the 2-liter bottles black, fill them with hot water to start out with, and place them on their side in the cold frame so their longest sides are exposed to the most sunlight and I'd use them as solar collectors. The water-filled bottles will collect heat during the day and release it at night as they cool. Even with a cold frame, you need to have a self-opening vent to allow the top to 'pop open' if the sunlight heats it up to a certain poing or you need to manually open the cold frame every morning and close it every evening unless the daytime temperatures are going to remain very cold all day long. Long-range forecast models show that our part of the country is likely to have another bad round of winter weather in February, perhaps as early as late next week, so planting early is quite a risk based on the current weather conditions, the Feb. forecast models and the knowledge that most parts of OK have had significantly colder than average temps this winter. There have been some years I've pushed the limits and planted early because the weather conditions have consistently been warmer than average, and you often can get away with early planting in a year like that. Well, first allow me to compliment you on your keen sense of fashion... ::grin:: Know, first, that just because you dug these worms from the topsoil of your garden does not guarantee that they are all surface dwelling species. Many deep soil worms will surface to feed and find a date. As such, and because there is no way to know what worm species in general might be common to your area, reliable information on reproductive and growth rates cannot be provided. I wish the kind of data you seek were available but, alas, that remains a wish! Adding some compost from a backyard pile to that container is likely to increase the level of available nutrition and better optimize conditions. Know, too, that coffee grounds and corn mean are no more or less attractive to them than are a few rotting leaves and a fruit or veggie rind or two. In fact, the fruit and veggie rinds may be advantageous due to the higher sugar and moisture content, which often/usually amplifies microbiological activity on which the worms rely. Consider including some of this kind of stuff as feedstock as opposed to the processed corn meal. My only other comment is that very small systems like this are far and away the most difficult to manage. Your set-up may require less resource but is not going to necessarily be an accurate indication of how a larger system will be managed. Larger bins are more stable and tend to have a better biological diversity that aids in heading troubles off at the pass. As you see your experiment through just keep in mind that your next bin, which I am confident you will ultimately set up, will be easier to handle! Not really bathroom related, but yet another tale for those who love stories about MrG - we are in the process of finishing off the rest of the useable basement (all of it minus the utility) and MrG has reared his ugly head yet again - remember wayyyyy back at the beginning of this adventure when I talked about the wavy concrete floor - OMG. So the rest of the basement is going to be loads of fun. It's out of level over an inch in quick checks - problem being it's too high in those spots - compared to where we will meet at the doorway (now beautifully tiled) to the laundry room. No, I will not let Mr.Hunzi break out and replace the concrete - we all know how that turned out last time, the end result may have been lovely, but the 10yr wait and the 3yr process is just too much for a second round of that sort of fun. ;-) And the future flooring is lovely, not inexpensive heart pine - unless I have to find an alternative to accommodate the Ghost of MrG. For lottery ticket and enduring and nancy who kept me company through the whole saga of bathroom and dirt before - come over and offer your wisdom at the home decorating forum - which is where I thought might fit best for the Studio Pink Babe Cave Adventure!

I absolutely love ginger, but I wasn't able to post to this before. I also love ginger flowers and have several types of ginger in my yard now. The blue ginger is blooming right now (see link below), but I also have red and white gingers, none of which are edible, but some of the flowers have very nice fragrances that are quite unique. As for edible ginger, I keep a jar of ginger paste (from an Indian market) that I use in soups, marinades, and stir fries, but not desserts. For desserts, I use ginger that I keep in the freezer. I should probably grow edible ginger. I bought ginger snaps at TJ's last week-end (along with some other more decadent cookies), but I think I should have made them myself. You bought two liters of ginger ale for the bottle???? Why didn't you buy two liters of something you liked? Or just go get a big jug? I apologize, I know that's not what you asked -- Maybe you could add vodka and fruit make slushies -- lots of them.

Thanks Annie and 1pinkmountain! Annie, that's some punch there. We don't drink so probably will consider doing the pork chop. I remember a friend of mine who went and lived in Korea for a couple of years, came home and started cooking meat in soda. He told me the soda acted like tenderizer. I had never tried it though. Yea, the only time we had Ginger Ale at home was for someone's upset tummy. My mother in law always has some at her house because she tends to have a very sensitive stomach. But I hope we won't have to drink it for that purpose. LOL

Annie1971, I bought the 2-liter because that's the only size I could find. They probably have something smaller but we don't drink soda so I have no ideas where they keep the smaller bottles. I picked the Ginger Ale because I'd seen hubby drinking it for his tummy. If I bought something else no one was going to drink it at all. But now I think about it, he's not having an upset stomach so probably won't be drinking it anyway. Silly me.

I would pour it into somethiung else and use the bottle...
Then I would maybe invite the neighbors in for punch?
Or use some for a marinade, and use some for the luiquid in bread.
I have never done it with ginger ale but beer is wonderful as the liquid in a yeast bread.
If I had some ginger ale...I would make this:
3Cups AP flour
1/2 cup whole wheat flour
1/4 cup "cereal"...wheatena, maltomeal, 7 grain, oatbran...whatever"
1 1/2 tsps salt
1 tsp cinnamon
2 packages yeast, or equivalant
2 T. oil...or butter
1/4 cup honey.
Mix...
warm 1 1/2 cups gingerale to room temp or a little warmer, Slowly work the liquid into the dry ingredients, adding a little more AP flour until it gets so you can knead it
And work in about 1/3 cup chopped dry fruit....perhaps apricots, raisins, maybe figs or dates and a couple of tablespoons of toasted sunflower seeds...or perhaps roll the finished loaf in sesame seeds.
Knead, rise, knock down, let rise, and shape into 2 loaves and bake at 350 for about 45 minutes.
Sound good?

It's great poured over pineapple sherbet and eaten/drank as a float. You can add a little lemon or lime to cut the sweetness, if you like.

Linda C, soda yeast bread? Happy thought indeed! What's the role of the soda in the bread? I first thought it was a sub for sugar then I noticed 1/4 cup of honey.

Denise, I like the ice cube idea. I make water kefir and sometimes it got a bit too strong when fermented for too long. I figure I can add an ice cube of soda to rescue it.

Trsinc, we don't usually do float. It's not the sweetness but the carbonation that my family doesn't like. Hubby doesn't mind but little man and I won't drink it because when the carbonation comes back up it hurts the nose! LOL

Lou, I have not tried the plastic wrap and bowl method. Think I am going to try it tonight. The soda only cost 88 cents so not a big deal. We can always give it to someone else if the plastic wrap method works. By the way, how big of holes and how many holes? Do you put banana peels in the bowl as well?

I sub GA (but I usually have seltzer water on hand)for water in pancake mix to make them light.

There are some great suggestions posted. I think I had better get some GA today.

Thanks Colleen, next time when we have corned beef, I will remember that.

Lou, I made one last night. I used a skewer to poke a hole then moved around to make it bigger. Had four holes all together. I left it in the kitchen overnight. This morning I looked there was one fruit fly in it. At least we caught one! LOL Will leave it longer to see if the rest will go in for a visit!

Mustangs, I do use seltzer water to make the batter for onion rings once in a while. It does give a nice and fluffy texture to the batter. Good trick!

Hey Lou, just to let you know that my plastic warp bowl trapped 4 fruit flies this morning. Compared to the milk jug trap this one definitely works better. Now I can give the bottle of ginger ale away for those who will enjoy it. Thanks!

My rotting tomato in a custard cup covered with saran with about a dozen holes poked in with a knife tip had easily 20 the next morning..
I think I inhaled more than 4!

I spaced the holes apart, in the plastic so they would have less chance of finding their way out.

Tried both ways side by side, the bottle caught just as many.

I put a little yeast in water, into both.

Might as well put the recipe in here to save you time.

Pancakes and Waffles Recipe

Ingredients:
2 Â½ cups milk ( IÂve been using powdered milk too)
2 eggs ( separated ) .
1/3 cup of Veg. Oil
2 tablespoon of vanilla
Pinch of salt
Â½ cup Sugar
1 cup of Wheat Flour
4 teaspoons Baking Powder
All Purpose flour
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Mix Pancake Batter
I beat the egg whites first , so I donÂt have to clean the beaters.
Beat the egg whites with a teaspoon of sugar, until peaked.
Add Â½ the egg whites to the batter and fold in easy.
Beat the other Â½ of the whites until very stiff and fold these in also.
After the pancakes are cooked, I put plastic in between for freezing.
BATTER:
Put the first 6 ingredients ( except egg whites ) in a mixing bowl and beat until smooth.
Put in the Wheat flour, Baking pwd. and some All Purpose flour.
Beat until smooth. Add enough flour to thicken slightly,
(were it leaves ripples while mixing ) not thin and loose.
For Waffles:
Thicken a little more, to where you have to move it around with a spoon,
when it is put on the waffle iron . Then do the egg white thing as in the pancake batter.
When baked I cool them fast on a rack and put them in a plastic bag,
and right in the freezer.
If you overcook a little, dampen slightly with water,
before you put them in the toaster oven.
As for the waffle iron , I have a very old round one with adjustable heat Range.
It makes a waffle about Â½ inch + thickness. For me this is just right,
for the amount of butter and syrup that you can put on top.
I found a Cuisinart mod.WMR-CA to match my old one.

Now I can make Waffles in Stereo

I donÂt use the Belgium Waffle Maker ; except when IÂm adding
Ice cream and fruit topping , because itÂs too much waffle for the
amount of syrup and butter. But may be good for you.!

If I want a Belgium Waffle, I just make a double decker and
put fruit or whatever filling in between.
With Ice cream on top.
Then you have more cooked surface area , on the Waffles.
Which is where the flavor is ( the cooked surface )

LOLOL Linda! I think the fruit flies like me too. Whenever we eat dinner, the fruit flies just hover around me, never my husband or our son. Think it's the balsamic vinegar that I used in my salad. When they got close to my face hubby couldn't stand it and tried to kill them without slapping me on the face. LOL So far, there are 6 or 7 of them in the bowl; they keep moving so I can't really count them. Anyway, so far I think the bowl is doing a good job. I don't have any fruit flies in front of my face at lunch time. But again, I didn't eat salad for lunch. Will find out at dinner time when I begin to eat.

Lou, what lovely recipe. I don't have a waffle maker. Bought a cast iron pancake puffs maker last week. Think I can bake it in the cast iron puffs maker baked in an oven?

Lou, just fill it to the rim? The puffs maker doesn't have a lid so I assume it will just puff up! LOL

By the way, the plastic wrap trap works and it captured 7 or 8 of flies but half of them found their way out! Got some smart fruit flies in the house.

Lou, we got ONE this morning! LOL But honestly we don't see as many of them flying around as usual. Maybe they spread the word about our new trap and most of them had fled for their life? LOL

Those singing frogs are so cute! I probably need a bigger trap to catch them.
