How about a more sophisticated lavendar? Maybe even do a soft overlay stencil (damask-like?) with a bit of silver or other metallic in it?

Squirrel - that sounds lovely and I would love it if she went for something like that. However, it would be too feminine for her personality. While she's not really a tomboy she considers herself 'alternative' (whatever that means! - a little emo?), and wants something bolder and edgier. WHich of course is hard to do with the PB style furniture which is newish.

Bulldinkie - rose and peach she has already nixed. The walls are actually a bold lavendar right now BM Lavendar Lipstick and she hates it. Blue might be an option. What kind of blue do you think would work?

I can't see the colors very well but I think a medium gray paint would look great. There are sooo many pretty grays to pick from now.

I was also going to suggest a med to darker grey. Something with more yellow than blue in it. Otherwise, perhaps a very deep burgundy?

Why not do it gray? Maybe then do the ceiling light blue or aqua for a little color and element of surprise. If she doesn't like "girly" don't push it. She can add accents in colors she chooses, and if she decides in a few years it's ok to do more girly looking stuff it will still go. There are lots of beautiful grays out there with hints of green, taupe, blue, etc. It's not all black/white cold grays of the past.

I have three girls (aged 5, 9 & 11) and their rooms are tannish gold with a navy ceiling, lime green with an aqua ceiling and light blue with a light gold ceiling. The middle kid who did the most subtle choice is now disappointed she didn't go bolder on her ceiling.

The original plan for all of this was to do 3 walls in BM Silver Lining and the wall behind the bed in BM Fashion Rose (bright plummy burgandy). But I was worried that it wouldn't 'go' with the rest of the house which is warm mid-tones. But I guess I should let her do it and not worry about the flow?

Colored ceiling is a good idea!

I think a really rich pewter or other dark grey would be wonderful with all the white furniture. You might also think about adding a single wall in an alternative color like red or strong turquoise or deep orange, and then picking that up in accents in the room.

One thing that might help is to look at the clothing she likes to wear - what appeals to her? Sounds like her bedroom with the light carpeting and PB white furniture is anything but 'alternative' - so let the paint color do that for her.

If you go with the grey tones, you could also see what she would think about doing one wall in the black chalkboard paint, so that she could write on the walls and have her friends do the same. I was the instigator behind my older DS's best friend doing that some years back in his room, and he loved it, still does when he is home from college. Great for an 'alternative' soul to express herself!

The color she has picked, the BM silver lining etc is exactly what I was envisioning as I was reading all the replies! Althougn I also pictured a deep eggplant as the accent wall. Go for it! Especially if she is the one who picked them out. Test it out on poster board to see if that is what she had in mind. I wouldn't worry about it going with the rest of the house. Bedrooms are the exception!

I think the BM silver lining is going to come off looking very blue. It's pretty if that is what you want. You might look at the pottery barn colors. I think something like cape hatteras sand might be more to a 15 year old's taste and it would blend more with your other rooms.

Thanks - I will take a look at the Cape Hattaras sand. I know that I would like it more but my daughter wants something bold and edgy. The gray in the bedding is is exactly like Silver Lining and one shade darker on the strip - Nickel. So it's a blue-based gray. If we were to go with gray walls I guess I need to stick with a blue-gray, right? Pewter sounded like a good idea but I wonder if the undertone is wrong.

How about Sherwin Williams Rain? It is a blue gray, sophisticated and could be edgy with the right accessories.

One of my 6 lovely DD's has this in her room with bedding that is a slightly metalic silvery Platinum color. The walls are an Eggplant color by BM. I am not sure of the name but I'll check if you are interested.

How about Restoration Hardware Silver Sage? The color reads more of a grey/blue depending on lighting. At least in San Jose, the entire store is painted that color and they sell little sample pots which are helpful.

Since SW Rain came up, does anyone have a picture of their room painted that color or Languid Blue, the color one chip over? I'm trying to decide between them and am having a hard time!

Silver Sage - I've always wanted to use that color. It looks great and would blend better with the rest of my house as well. Not sure if she'd think it was bold enough.

DD and I are going to go to the fabric store today just to look at colors. One minute she's thinking gray and turquoise, the next minute purple and she liked SW Rain too. The painter is coming on Tuesday so we'd better get this decided!

Smokey amethyst, a smokey turquoise, maybe some yellow accents, some black. Maybe she'd like this Spiegel screen -- it was actually featured on a kid's bedroom website.

PS. I wouldn't worry about the colors in the rest of the house - this is her place. I think teenagers need their own "special place" that reflects them. I had the coolest bedroom when I was younger - my mom always let us pick the colors and when we moved out she neutralized it. My sister(it had 2 full sized built in beds) picked out a vibrant green/turqoise - most moms would have vetoed - She even let me feather paint it on accent walls when I was 16!! Everyone liked to be at our house - my mom liked us under her nose. Win/win for everyone!!

The eggplant accent I had in mind is BM Shadow 2117-30 paired with BM Misty Memories 2118-60. It is one and two strips over from silver lining. It has more purpley undertones instead of the gray/blue. Don't know how that would work with the bedding.

Was looking for the screen, who knows how old the article was ... but I did see some great drawer pulls. I wonder if she'd like something like that. Sorry I guessed on a light carpet color and didn't see you had mentioned it's cream.

Funny, that last pic looks so much more red than when I was working on it, where it was more purple-y eggplant. I don't know if it's my eyes shifting around after some color-relief, or if something happens otherwise. I agree, gray with wonderful and mysterious undertones apparent looks great :)

I agree they turned out red! I thought it must have been a blooper of sorts since you are usually so good at adjusting colors! Like I said, the ones I just posted are only 1 and 2 strips away from the silver lining they were considering. Going the other way in the fan deck the colors pick up more gray/blue cool tones.

I suspect I may have been getting into the color with turquoise! lol. Let's call it Raisin Glaze or maybe Sedona Clay, or Arizona Sunset :)

WOW squirrelheaven my daughter is going to be so thrilled when she sees these pictures!! I'll show them to her tomorrow and see what she says. I love so many of them I wouldn't know which one to choose. Perhaps my favorite is the smokey purple with the teal accessories?? Wonder what she will say.

I wonder if BM Beach Glass or Mount Saint Anne would look similar to that? It's one strip over from Gray Whisp (the RH Silver Sage look-alike). Silver Sage is pretty but is more green-silver than blue-silver.

Oh great!! Missed this. Squirrely-mix. It's supposed to be along the lines of SS, but I think it might be a bit lighter and fresher. Try printing it out on matte photo paper. If she still likes the color -- take it to the paint shop for them to read the color in!

You're likely seeing a slightly different color than I am, but I'll flip through my fan decks and see if anything jumps out anywhere in the BM & SW lines.

I think teal or turquoise would be very cool. (I was an "alternative" teenager too.) There are a lot of cool, retro-looking accessories out there (cushions, clocks, etc.) now that incorporate a teal color (often with brown), so she could create a groovy, sixties feel.

The painting is done. We went with SW Rain. It was the closest to that blueish-tealish-silver color (last image in this thread). The ceiling is Topsail which is the lightest color on the strip. Looks wonderful!

Unfortunately (ha ha) she wants to put all her stuff back in (all sorts of odds and ends- posters, a bulletin board with a million scraps of paper on it that are all important, a few stuffed animals, random photos, makeup, tropys from when she was little, a Christmas wreath with sentimental meaning, etc.) I could make it look so cute with the right accessories, but she's unwilling to part with all this stuff. Oh yea, there are cords going everywhere from her chargers, Ihome, and other electronics.

So I guess it won't be a designer room!
