A friend of mine has a lot of that color in her family room. She combined it with brown leather, taupe walls (nicer than it sounds), and a little bit of black accents.

Have you looked at the Pottery Barn catalog? They have some really pretty pillows that would go well with the rug.

It's hard to start with a solid red rug - just about anything will go well with that. I'd look for some pillows or window treatment fabrics or something with pattern in it. Then you can use the other colors in that piece to determine what you want the walls to be or the furniture.

I'd collect some inspiration pics of rooms and color combinations that you love.

I was thinking brown. The room has a white fireplace and I was going to maybe flank it with two white bookshelves.

I do know that I want an armoire for my widescreen TV. Maybe a dark brown color.

Ya never know about monitors, but the rug appears to be a yellow-red rather than a pink-red? I had a rug that color (deep yellow-red) in my last home and I love that color. It went wonderfully with green and peach and touches of lilac. My antique sofa and chair just got reupholstered in a deep tomato red mohair velvet. It looks really good with tans, browns, golds, and caramel as well as with green. It would look great with navy, white or ivory too. Red is surprisingly versatile and it adds wonderful warmth and energy to a room.

I know this is going to sound strange, but I consider the color red to be neutral. I can't think of a color that would not complement it: purple, orange, lime, peach, blue, green yellow, etc. All would work.

I can picture the red rug, brown furniture, white bookcases and a hit of lime for an extra punch.

Well, Monablair beat me to it. Red is a neutral. It goes with everything. So, pick the next thing you like...artwork, pretty fabric for a side chair, whatever, and go from there.

I wouldn't do dark brown, but that's because I like clear colors. Looks like you do too. If you go with warm tones, throw in a little something cool to give it balance. Same with depth. If you go with dark colors, put something light in there to give the eye some variety.

I happen to like red and pale blue together, a la Cath Kidston. I think a washed denim for a family room would be nice with that rug. Or a khaki color. Some kind of green on the walls and some apple green or turquoise accents for a little fun.
