What's for Dinner #279

Gina_W

278's done. Here comes 279!

I haven't been cooking much and it looks like I'm not alone! LOL. I know, I know - summer is slow season here at the CF. Everyone's bizzzzzy...

I think I'll broil lamb chops tonight and have an appetizer of some Roquefort and some of the vanilla fig jam Jessica and I just made. Terrible dinner, just terrible! Nyuk, nyuk.

Annie it's great to see you here, hope you're hangin' in there kiddo -- I know you are. Ann I hope you get some toothache relief real soon. That pizza pic was sooooo beautiful...

    Asian Steamed Buns

  • canarybird01

Hi all....just checking in from Canada after good flights with some delays and much heat in Madrid. I arrived in Vancouver with a ball of fire in my throat....caught one of those "aeroplane colds" after the stress of getting ready and sitting a cramped ten hours on the London to Vancouver flight. So have spent the first days of my holiday stuffing myself with cold remedies and drinking gallons of hot tea. Weather here was warm on my arrival but has since turned to rain. No problem....we put on the wood stove and have been snuggling under blankets on the sofa at my daughter's Vancouver Island home. Here are some dinner pics:

Well the first one isn't exactly dinner...it's room service breakfast in my London airport hotel. There were large slices of pink grapefruit in the left bowl, cold cuts, muesli, toast & jam, orange juice and coffee.
Next is the Air Canada dinner where I chose fish with orzo and vegetables with a feta salad. Nice but not as good as the food on the Iberia flights Tenerife to Madrid (change of planes in Madrid) and Madrid to London. Iberia has the best food! But only in business class which I had to take this time as all economy seats were booked. They had beautiful fillet steak in gravy with veg, a great salad and delish dessert... all the wine, rolls and coffee you want. Heavenly. Too bad I had my camera tucked too far away to catch either meal. The next meal from Madrid to London was a Cordon Bleu again very good with veg, salad and the same as the first flight.
The new Air canada planes have touchscreen TV's in every seat with a good selection of movies so each person has his own choice of news, docs, audio or movies. The landscape pic was taken out the window of the small prop plane flying between Vancouver and Vancouver Island to Victoria airport. You see the Gulf Islands and Mount Baker which is on the American side.

Arriving here I had a craving for a Canadian-made burger so my daughter and I headed to one of the local chains where we knew we would get one with sweet potato fries. Yep....they sure do pile on those fries! A glass of wine cost more than a whole liter of good Rioja wine in Spain so we each settled for a glass of B.C. beer.

Been reading through previous posts and loving all your food and photos! Hugs again to Annie!

    SharonCb .... now in B.C.

patti skipped out for dinner: what's for dinner

    Q

    Comments (18)
I'm back from dinner. It was great visiting with our snowbird friends and we talked for over two hours. We were neighbors when we both lived in the boonies and they moved back to Ohio shortly after we moved. We went on a cruise together with others from the neighborhood and had so much fun with them once. So now we e-mail and get together once a year :-( Dinner--not so good. I ordered the fettucini alfredo with bacon-wrapped sea scallops. The salad that came with it was very good, the scallops cooked just right but the alfredo was disappointing, to say the least. It was a big plate of angel hair pasta with a huge glob of alfredo sauce out of a jar. Ick, ick, ick! What could be easier than alfredo sauce? It's just a little butter, cream, garlic and lots of parmesan. They had little rolls that came with the salad that looked a little like those biscuits at Red Lobster, but were floury and dry. Now I remember why we don't like to eat out. Harry had fried oysters, baked sweet potato and hush puppies. He said on the way home it wasn't very good, but if it's dinner time I swear that man would eat plastic! Guess we won't be eating there again any time soon!

Who made MW Signature Serial#URR-279-A, Model#55X sewing machine

    Q

    Comments (3)
I tired digging around on the net and the most I could find was that up until 1954 MW's machines were made by National. 'National also happened to be the supplier of sewing machines for Montgomery Wards & Co., Sears Roebuck & Co.'s chief competitor. However, unlike Montgomery Wards, which would continue to get all sewing machines from National until the sewing machine company met its demise in 1954, Sears would switch its suppliers several times in the following years.' On the website I linked to, you have to register & post an intro just to read the forums, I didn't take the time to do that. Wait a minute. Is this your machine? http://possumjimandelizabeth.com/xhtml/collect_sewing_montward.html The writer says it was made in Japan but not the mfr. This may not be yours, your model number is slightly different. You could join this yahoo group, I bet you'd be able to find the mfr. there but it would take some digging. vintagejapansewingmachines-you'll have to google it, gardenweb won't let me post the link (it's true some yahoo groups are spammy & members are bombarded with filthy emails, I still get some real lulu's from a bicycling group I was in ages ago!) You have a mystery machine Mable! I'm curious to see if anyone can get a definitive answer for you. Do you still sew on it? Here is a link that might be useful: sewing machine collector site

Last dinner of 2013? What's for dinner ?

    Q

    Comments (17)
We were visiting my wife's family in Vermont which ends up being a large group, with most of her brothers and sisters, and their spouses and kids, and this year even several girlfriends of the kids. All told we were about thirty. Meals were split up with one or two people volunteering for each meal. New Year's Eve was my night. I was stumped at first as far as what to make, but the co-volunteer Eric (a foodie BIL) came up with the suggestion of top-your-own tacos. We actually went with tostadas, and made black beans, three different meat toppings, and about a dozen other topping options, with side dishes of Mexican-spiced rice, and homemade cole slaw. Logistically the meal worked well, although some people didn't realize that they were supposed to be able to pick up the tostada after they made it, and instead they buried it beneath a 2-inch deep mound of toppings. Also we forgot to put out the guacamole until after half the people had served themselves. Food wise, some parts of the meal worked better than others. The shredded chicken verde was good but would have been better with more of the tomatillo salsa, however the co-op closed early, and the normal grocery store had no green salsa. The beef/chorizo was good but could have used a bit more of something, Eric and I couldn't decide what it needed. The shrimp was a big hit, the only problem with it was it disappeared so fast, the recipe (as well as I remember it) for the shrimp is below. Chili-Lime Shrimp 2 lbs peeled uncooked shrimp (31-40 count -- cut into thirds) 10 cloves garlic (minced) 1 4oz can diced green chilies 2 limes chili powder canola oil Liberally cover raw shrimp with chili powder and the juice of 1 half of a lime, and let rest for 10 minutes. In small pan, heat oil over medium heat, add garlic and green chilies, until garlic is softened and fragrant. remove from heat. In large pan, heat oil over high heat, until it is smoking hot, add shrimp stirring occasionally to make sure all the shrimp are getting cooked, and none are burning, after about 2-3 minutes the shrimp should all be cooked, add the garlic and green chilies that you set aside, and the rest of the juice of the limes. Stir for about 1 more minute, and place in large bowl to serve. Overall the meal received rave reviews.

    John Deere LX279 or GT235

    Q

    Comments (2)
Sounds to me as though the LX279 would be better suited to your application. If you were to tell me you had more acerage and needed to tow things and needed a higher ground speed then I would steer you towards the GT.....but you don't. Also, the 42"C two blade deck flows much better and bags better than a non-power flow 48" three blade deck. The liquid cooled Kawasaki is without a doubt a better engine...beautifully quiet....but there is an occasional maintenance aspect to it you don't get with an air cooled engine. You also mention that the LX has been one owner and obviously maintained very well. My guess is it's had an easier life than the GT. A GT just by the nature of it's intended purpose will likely have been living a harder life. For your application I don't think the big heavy duty transmission or the larger wheels do anything for you....you just don't need them for your application. You'll also get one of the nicest and quietest engines ever put in a lawn tractor. Also keep in mind that the LX series used the TuffTorq K62 transmission. While not as heavy duty and high ground speed as the GT transmission, the K62 is way more stout than anything you'll find in any other lawn tractor today. Based on your criteria I would be leaning towards the LX 279. BTW...I have 2000 LX255 ( same exact machine only mine has a 15 HP Kohler CV15 air cooled single cylinder engine). I've had it since new and it's been 100% problem free....but I do maintain it very well.

Sharon sorry to hear that you have caught a cold but your pics. are wonderful as usual. Enjoy your vacation with your daughter.

Tonight is Ribeyes on the grill along with Gruyere potatoes & salad.

Tomorrow is already planned as my SIL's father passed away and after the funeral everyone is coming to my home so I have been up since the crack of dawn getting food ready.

Annie, so nice to see you back. I have thought about you and hope that things are getting a little easier.

Great pics Sharon, hope your feeling better and having a great time. I love sp fries.

Ann, hope your tooth is better in time for a big birthday dinner (it's coming up, right?)

We had a casserole tonight. I was telling the kids about casseroles (a little food history lesson at dinner) and we started talking about names for casseroles. We call this one "Great Aunt Tillie's Famous Tuna Surprise". It's chicken. And my aunt Tillie never cooked. And there's no surprise. But we like the name.

Thanks for asking about the tooth. Waiting still to hear from the specialist. Not happy that he hasn't called yet. Unfortunately it is still a problem but not quite as bad. I think that the antibiotics are kicking in.

    Great looking Asian Buns.

Kathleen, I'd love your dinner. And nice looking haul from the market.

Arabella, I thought that the surprise was that the Tuna was actually chicken. That would surprise me. LOL!

Good memory. Anniversary and birthday are 4 days apart.

Dinner tonight was breaded chicken breast with rice and broccoli.

I didn't cook this evening. Alice turned her nose up at my soup last night. "I don't do soup in the summer, Mom!" So tonight I gave her money and said shop for what you want to eat. She came home with milk, guacamole fixings, sushi, sandwich makings for school lunches, and a HUGE watermelon. I gotta say, that girl can pick the best watermelons. So that was dinner!

I'm so glad I'm not the only one not doing much cooking lately. Turning on the oven is just not that appealing! Last night I made smashed potatoes, fresh corn on the cob and panko crusted shrimp (I admit it, I'm addicted. I'm sure it'll pass, but I'm having fun while it lasts). Tonight I was lazy and we had "planned-overs" more corn on the cob and mashed potatoes with grilled chicken breasts. I'd love to have the wherewithal to plan the lovely meals you all come up with, but I'm getting a little better every week. I'm just waiting for the weather to cool down so I can play in the kitchen more!

Sharon, enjoy your time in Canada with your daughter. I know you'll have a wonderful time.

Ann, I'm glad to hear that your tooth is doing a little better. Wishing you a speedy recovery and more of that lovely pizza!

Annie, glad to see you back here regularly. I wish I were closer to you so I could drop by to give you a big hug!

    All the best to everyone!

    LOL, AM, love that story.

Hi kathleen - you're getting me too. I guess I need some gravy, huh? great dishes.

Hmmmm. I wish Alice would teach me how to pick out a good watermelon. I have to buy them already cut, so I can see if they're actually red.

Annie, I think of you every day...

    Thinking of you AB.

Ann, I've always found it ironic how the medical experts' primary advice is to avoid stress, and yet, they think nothing of keeping patients waiting for test results. Anyway, I hope they'll take care of your tooth soon. Btw, I'm glad you liked the casserole dish. It's a dish I've used before on a previous WFD thread, at least 8 years ago. I like the size and shape, but you know I'm not big on colors and patterns, so this was an impulse purchase, but I'm sort of okay with it[G]

Kathleen, AM and ntt_hou, delicious looking offerings.

Sharon, I know you'll enjoy spending time with your wonderful family! And track down all the foods unavailable to you back home.

Dinners have been good, and frequent, but -subject to change without notice- due to the fact that it's still Summer, and it's still freakin' hot.
Plus, Thumper will be going back to school soon, and I'd rather spend time monkeying around with him, than be stuck in the kitchen.

Garlic Chicken. Thin Zucchini Pancakes with Double Brie and Roasted Tomatoes. Chicken Parmesan with New Potatoes in Pesto Vinaigrette.

I love chicken picatta and haven't had it in quite a while..note to self to make soon!

    Those Thai wraps look excellent.

The service/funeral and luncheon went very, very well. I served ham & smoked turkey sandwiches (on small potato rolls) with condiments, deviled eggs, potato salad, vegetables with two dips, chips/peanuts, baked beans in the crock, cheese/crackers, fruit salad, three desserts (Ann's silly toffee bars (which I adore - found on a search), Candy Bar Brownies and Blueberry cheesecake. Drinks, etc. Sad day but fun afterwards to celebrate Roy's life.

We were all stuffed from that so no dinner for the night.

Sol, as always your meals are always a work of art. I would really love those zucchini pancakses with double brie and roasted tomatos...yummm!

I have to say again that everyone's food and photos look wonderful! But I'll start right in with my contribution today before I start coughing and sneezing again. I've not had such a bad cold for many years but I guess the change in climate really affected me this time.

My DD, her DH and I were invited over to a neighbour's home for dinner. These are special neighbours of many years and dear friends of ours. The hostess is an artist who paints, grows an amazing vegetable and flower garden and cooks divinely! She said the dinner she was to make would all be harvested from her garden, with the exception of the meat. It was so delicious, as she is an innovative cook. I'm getting the recipes of what she made. Apart from the veggies she ordered a special cut of brisket from her butcher, which took a few days to arrive. She made it in a marinade of beer, balsamic vinegar and boullion (I think that's what she said) and cooked in in the oven for 4 hours. Delish!

The vegetables were garden greens with pecans, swiss chard with garlic and pine nuts, beets, dilled potatoes, onion gravy, and a dish which was forgotten in the oven but which we tried after dessert when she remembered it was there: julienne carrots cooked in ginger and orange juice - no photo of that one. Here are the photos: one of a bucolic Vancouver Island scene taken of an old cabin at the back of my DD's property. I've included one of the neighbour's dining room (love that lamp which is on a dimmer switch and looks like candles glowing) as well as their newly renovated kitchen with the dense forest seen through the window. The beautiful serving bowls used were made by the neighbour's sister, who is a potter.

    Pecans & Garden Greens Salad

    My Dinner Plate

Last night I made almond breaded chicken breasts in the oven and my DD added a medley of vegetables. Too tired to take a pic but tonight we're cooking for guests so I hope to get some photos. Sun has started to shine...think I'll go soak up some rays while it lasts. I see PBase is offline and some photos in previous posts aren't showing up today.

Just checking in - have been busy sewing and quilting, not a whole lotta cookin' going on. I did make 10 grain bread yesterday.

Last night made pizza, tried a new dough from Pizza Therapy. Toppings were crushed tomatoes, green pepper, onion, seasoned ground turkey, pickled banana peppers and Muenster cheese. Dinner tonight will probably be the same thing.

Oh Sol, I'm drooling over your Zucchini Pancakes with Brie. I have to bring that to Matthew's attention. He love anything with Brie.

    Teresa, pizza sounds delicious.

Shelley, Great photo. And what an interesting soup. I bet it tasted as good as it looked.

Sharon, nice to see you posting from Canada. Great looking salad.

Finally cooked a couple of dinners. Saturday night I grilled a small boneless rib roast. Just big enough for two. Baked potato cooked on the grill, hence the charred skin and fresh beans from our garden.

Last night was Spaghetti with Grilled Italian sausage.

LindainTenn, go to www.photobucket.com and set up an account and upload your pics. The site will walk you through it. If you can't figure out how to post them here, just holler, someone will help.

Sol, I want some of those zuke-cakes, myself.

The discovery of some frozen sliced ham prompted a pot of yellow split pea soup. Split pea is Alice's favorite so even the girl who doesn't "do soup" in the summer caved and had some.

I will post it on a separate thread so it'd be easy for those that want it.

I'd love a bowl of split pea soup, but not for a few days. It was around 90F here today and same for tomorrow. We've had the most beautiful warm Labor Day weather that I can ever remember. Everyone was out on the lake full force this weekend, including me.

I have been cooking and taking pic's, but way behind on posting.

    Earlier this week...

Then I got busy with peaches, I made Peach Preserves and Peach Butter.

We had Turkey Burgers. They were really good, I hope I can remember how I made them the next time that the mood strikes.

Yesterday we had wings, potato salad and really sweet corn.
I made a Peach and Cream Tart with Almond Crust.

And finally, tonights dinner. Babyback Ribs, potato salad, more tomatoes (found some really good heirlooms), watwemelon, sweet corn...followed up with another piece of peach tart.... OK, I'll admit it, I had a piece of the peach tart for breakfast too.

The cucumber pasta - was given to my aunt who wanted me to make it as she doesn't "cook" - lol. I think it's a Taste of Home recipe.

    cool cucumber pasta

    8 ounces penne pasta
    1 tbl oil
    2 cucumbers
    1 onion sliced thin
    1 1/2 cup sugar
    1 cup water
    3/4 cup white vinegar
    1 tbl mustard
    1 tbl parsley
    1 teaspoon salt
    1 teaspoon pepper
    1/2 teaspoon garlic salt

cook pasta place in bowl with onion and cucumbers toss with oil
In a jar combine remaining ingredients and shake.
Pour over salad to coat chill for 4 hours

Eileen, I want that soup! That looks so good - and great pic.

dixie - those silly toffee squares have been on my to try list for waaaay too long.

Shelley, your soup looks and sounds really great, but I have a problem with fish in soup. I did it to myself - years ago on a health kick I made the most horrific fish chowder and I've never been able to go that route, since. :-)

Sharon, I hope you're having a wonderful visit. As usual, your salad has me drooling.

Ann, dear, I don't know what you do to pasta, but it always has me craving it, when it comes from you.

And Nancy. Your post has inspired me to go get peaches. Hopefully I will have time to do something with them when Will goes to school on Thursday.

No pic from me, but last night I made my summer shrimp obsession - magothyrivergirl's rum glazed spicy shrimp. Man, that stuff is good. We have extra that I want to have over pasta tonight - I'll come up with a sauce and throw th ecooked shrimp on top. (recipe follows)

We also had sauteed summer squash, and rice. Jiffy Pop by the fire was dessert.

We're living summer to its fullest these last few glorious days - swimming and having campfires every night - then Will and I "try" to sleep in the tent with Sammy - and end up going in the house by midnight...lol.

    Stacy

Rum Glazed Spicy Shrimp - magothyrivergirl
(recipe from my local grocer's ad that was featuring Key West Pink Shrimp)
    2 1/2 lb shrimp
    6T light Rum (4T + 2T)
2T fresh Key Lime juice ( I have also used regular limes)
2 T olive oil (see note)
    3 garlic gloves, minced
1/4 tsp red pepper flakes (I use more)
    1/4 tsp salt
1/4 cup packed dark brown sugar
    1T cider vinegar
Peel shrimp, keeping tails intact. Place in bowl with 4T of rum, key lime juice, oil, garlic, red pepper flakes & salt. Toss to coat throughly. Cover; marinate in frig for 30 - 60 mins.
In small bowl combine brown sugar, vinegar,& remaining 2T rum. Stir.
Thread shrimp on skewers. Lightly brush with brown sugar glaze.
Grill over med - hot fire about 3 minutes per side, brushing w/ additional glaze until shrimp are opaque.
Note: For more zing I use 1T olive oil + 1T hot chili oil

Glad you are back posting Stacy.

Nancy, everything looks wonderful, but that peach cream tart looks amazing.

Linda, I haven't cooked Tuna in a while. Yours looks just perfect. The way I like it.

Diner food last night. Hot Chicken Sandwiches. I roasted two small chickens in the morning before work. So dinner was easy to put together. Just had to fry the potatoes and make the gravy.

God knows what WFD it was when I last posted, but there has been little cooking going on round here. Somehow we eat, but more of my energy has gone into fun art projects to swap...digitally modified postcards, and ATCs (artist trading cards). I am also doing literacy tutoring at the local detention center.

But our big project food wise was the Big Jim peppers from New Mexico. We brought back 40lb and next time we do, I am going to deseed the peppers BEFORE roasting no matter what the man says.

We filled two suitcases with peppers!

That's what they look like when roasted.

Last Sunday night's dinner..chipolte turkey with quinoa, and a cauli medley with some yummy Indian garlic chutney powder. I have enough purple basil to share with the whole country.

Just scanned real quick. I have been doing cooking off and on since the funeral. It seems that we have been asked out to dinner to join friends more in the last week then in the last 6 months, but I really have enjoyed it! Labor Day at friends we had the best chicken and shrimp dish cooked on the grill. I have put in a request for the recipe.

The weather has not been as humid here so that has made it nice also. Family and friends are coming for dinner on Saturday which I had planned to grill out but I don't think that is going to happen. Looks like Hannah is going to pack a punch on us as far as rain/thunder/lightening - I guess I will have to go with Plan B or no plan at all.

Tonight, we are going out to dinner by ourselves just to celebrate a little on something good that happened in our lives. To be honest, as of 4:22 we have not decided yet where we are going.

marigene, your tomatoes looks wonderful!!!!!!! so red and bright and fresh looking. Tell Trevor the cake is beautiful - what a good job!

Tonight Will had a bagel sandwich with turkey and cheese and some of this. I just had the pasta and veggies. Had some carrots and beans still from the farm and it was very tasty.

This is a dangerous thread to look at first thing in the morning. Creates all kinds of cravings.

Marigene, I'd love your tex-mex dinner and your tomato tart. Some of Stacy's gorgeous pasta and Kathleen's Greek Tart.

I got lucky at the grocery store and found a beautiful big 7 pound Brisket. I hardly ever see Brisket in our regular grocery stores. It went in a low oven before leaving for work yesterday morning, setting the timer to ring after about 7 hours so that Moe would remember to remove it from the oven. Melt in the mouth tender brisket served with mashed potatoes, peas and Sol's Zucchini Pancakes. OMG!! if you haven't tried these you should. I've wanted to try these ever since I saw Sol's picture. I even bought some triple cream Brie to serve them with. Instead though I made them as a side to serve with the Brisket. They were fabulous. (Moe's description). And I couldn't agree more. Went wonderful with the beef gravy. I still have the Brie so I'll be making these again soon.

(I even ate a leftover one for breakfast)

Ann, that looks excellent. And those pancakes had to be good for you to eat leftovers, LOL!!
Will you eat the leftover brisket on a sandwich? I wish I had one now!

Everyones pictures and food looks wonderful! I haven't been cooking much...just pasta salads, fresh vegetables, nothing really photo worthy.

Ann, How did you perpare your brisket before putting in a low oven? I think I want to do that tomorrow morning for a dinner and a movie we are having at our home. Looks delish!

Great looking meals everyone. Especially loving the different salads everyone is making.

Marigene, You've been cooking up a storm as usual. All of it looks wonderful, but I'd really love a piece of that chocolate cake.

Stacy, I just want to grab a fork and dig right into those pasta and veggies!

Kathleen, great looking food and wonderful place settings.

Ann, you've also been busy in the kitchen, and I'd take any one of your meals as they all look wonderful. Lucky find on the brisket. I never see it in stores here. Always have to order it.

Dinners the last couple of nights were braised blade steaks with mushrooms and onions, roasted potatoes, braised green and yellow beans with tomatoes and a salad.

Crispy chicken, zucchini pancakes with feta and herbs in them,(they were really good),greek salad and roasted cauliflower.

Last night was mediterranean snapper, smashed baby potatoes, crispy zucchini coins, lemon garlic broccoli and a wonderful tomato tatin, wich was like an upside down tomato tart. Tomatoes were baked in a quiche pan, then topped with goat cheese and herbs. A puff pastry sheet was spread with artichoke truffle spread, and then inverted on to the tomatoes. Baked until pastry was puffy and brown and then inverted onto a plate, so the puff pastry topping, becomes the crust. Very yummy!

Dixiedog here is the recipe for the halibut corn chowder.

Adapted from Karen Barnaby's The Passionate Cook

    Halibut, Corn and Cheddar Chowder

    6 tbsp unsalted butter
    1 c finely chopped onion
    1 c finely chopped celery
    3 tbsp flour
    2 tsp smoked paprika
    3 c chicken stock
1/2 c finely chopped red bell pepper
    2 cups homogenized milk
salt and fresh ground black pepper
    1/2 tsp dried thyme
    1/4 tsp lemon pepper
2 lbs boneless skinless halibut cut into bite sized pieces
    1 c corn kernels
    1 c cut up broccoli
1 c shredded sharp cheddar cheese
    1 tbsp minced parsley
    1 tbsp minced chives

In large pot over med heat, melt the butter and add onion and celery and cook til softened. Add in the flour and paprika and cook stirring for one minute. Slowly whisk in the broth until smooth. Bring to a boil, then turn down the heat to a simmer. Add the red pepper and broccoli and thyme and cook stirring frequently for ten minutes. Add in the milk and bring to a simmer. Season with the salt, lemon pepper and fresh ground black pepper. Add in the halibut and corn. Simmer five to ten minutes or until the halibut is cooked through. Stir in the cheese, parsley and chives and serve immediately. Serves 6-8.

Food here is inspirational, but the dishes are going to get me in serious shopping trouble....

I'm actually not here to praise but to rant.

Yesterday, I roasted a head of garlic, about 10 beautiful tomatoes and 3 red peppers. Smushed out the garlic, skinned and seeded the peppers. Ran the vegetables through the food processor for a great pasta sauce. The house smelled fantastic. In between carpool runs, I make and bake fabulous ground chicken meatballs. Also make a side dish of sauteed chick peas and spinach. Make the pasta. Serve the sauce on the side and tell the kids eat it if you like it, no pressure. They liked it. I liked it. DH (choose your own adjective) ignores it and applies ketchup.

That was cathartic, I feel better.

    Good eating all!

Oh Denise, I feel your pain. Rant away! I have a DH who routinely picks the meat out of a stir fry to slap it on a bun with mustard.

Pizza last night - I was exhausted from the week. Thursday was meatloaf. I love meatloaf. DH has bad meatloaf memories from childhood, but I think I've cured him of that!

TOnight we're invited to a friends.

Shelley thank you so much for providing the soup recipe. Boy that really would have hit the spot today. We had leftover Chinese the other night and then last night I cooked both Ribeye steaks and pork tenderloin on the grill (Steak for last night and Tenderloin for tonight) knowing how bad the weather was going to be here today. I also cooked up fresh green beans, beets and corn. Last night we had the beans and corn w/the steak along with bread. Tonight will be the beets and cooked cabbage along with the pork and dinner rolls.

Dixiedog you are welcome! Dinner last night was Marcella Hazans Roast Chicken with Lemons, which really is a simple and excellant recipe!

    {{gwi:1555326}}

Nancy's Blue cheese potato salad. Another winner! My husband isn't a big potato fan and my son hates blue cheese but both of them loved this. I used a very mild blue cheese.
    {{gwi:1555328}}

    A caprese salad
    {{gwi:1555331}}

Mini pitas that I brushed with melted butter and then sprinkled with duqqa, sumac and grey sea salt
    {{gwi:1555333}}

Some buttered curried corn rounded out the meal. DH had the last blueberry creme brulee for dessert. Simple but really delicious dinner.

kkathleen, my hydrangeas are mostly white still - yours are gorgeous - as is that tart.

Ann, those pancakes are gorgeous - and I saw your potato ones too - did you only sub the potatoe for zucchini or were there other changes?

Denise, I understand. DH loves Arby's as much as he loves my cooking. aaaargh.

wow, Shelley - it looks and sounds like a great dinner! What is duqqa?

A couple nights ago, we just had a big plate of beefy nachos with homemade chips.

Two nights ago, we went to an afternoon football game and came home freezing, so I made some chicken soup. Forgot to take a pic of the finished soup, but I did take some of these gorgeous carrots that I got from the farm.

And last night we had grilled salmon. With some weird salad recipe that I got out of the newspaper. Why do I do that?

Gorgeous carrots! Actually Stacy, everything looks great, but those carrots are beautiful. I have some carrots in my mess of a garden that I could probably pull up. How do you know when they're ready to pull? I'm pathetic when it comes to gardening, I'm not sure why I keep trying. All my corn shriveled and died this year, most of my cucumbers died and my melons, well my melons were actually cucumbers. And that's not a euphemism.

Last night we had subway since my power was out for much of the day. Tonight I'm working on some turkey soup with rice since it's kind of damp and chilly from yesterday's rainstorm.

Some great looking pictures. Yeah, Saturday was a wash out as far as company due to all the rain from Hanna. Sunday, what a difference a day makes. Beautiful sunshine and low humidity. We went and got a bushel of crabs and the family came over and we ate on my back screen porch along with coleslaw, sliced tomatoes & cukes, corn-on-the-cob and ice cream.

Monday we had hamburgers on the grill with swiss cheese & baby portabellas. Fries along side.

Last night we both were not that hungry so I just made us Chef Salads and a slice of bread.

Tonight is up in the air? I have Pork Ribs in the frig. defrosted but I don't know if that's what I feel like.

  • annie1992

AM, just go out to the garden, and run your finger down into the ground round the carrot, you can feel how big it is.

If you think they are big enough, dig them. Don't try to just pull them because the tops will invariably break off, leaving the root in the ground.

don't give up on the garden, my cucumbers did nearly nothing this year and the corn is all about 3 inches long per ear. It was too hot and after the catastrophic flooding in June we got almost two months with no rain at all. Even the sprinkler didn't help the corn. No butternut squash either, and I've been gardening for decades. It's like playing poker with G*d....

Nothing exciting around here lately, burgers on the grill last night. Over the weekend I did make jalapeño jelly and hot pepper jelly.

Tonight will be corn chowder, I think.

Lights out for this thread seeing it has hit 50 posts.
