Forgot TGIF 7-31-08 (busy week everyone???)

Just up since our 5 year old woke us up after a bad dream and he/she inside me decided to start kicking my bladder and then I got hungry. Started reading posts and realized we must all be busy canning, staying cool ( 110 heat index here tomorrow), getting ready to go back to school ( ick) or on vacation:)

We don't have much going on. I entered 35 different herbs from my garden and also the selected tons of flowers from my garden to show at the county fair booth. I wasn't up to going through the canning closet to find things to enter so didn't put any of those in. Woke up this morning to find a brown grocery bag full of burpless cukes and one of the secretaries sent home with dh more cukes and green peppers. I have a bushel of apples I picked from a neighbor to get made into applesauce for the new baby to come, but not when it has been over 100 for two days and is expected to be that way through Monday, with high humidity.

We have a family reunion on Sunday to go to, the 75th annual one and they decided it would be the last. I think it is a shame to give it up after so many years. Tomorrow is my hometown's city wide garage sales, but the thought of pushing a double stroller around in that heat and humidity wears me out thinking about it.

DH update, the blood sugar counts have been going down and staying around 120 but with 12 pills a day is tough on DH who would rather chew on a nail then take meds. In fact he has 43 sick days built up after only 5 years so gets paid extra each month because he loses 3 sick days a month because he is at the limit. He doesn't get sick much and this is hard on him. That and the stress of it being an ongoing thing and that it is something he will have to watch the rest of his life. His intestines aren't infected nor no sign of Crone's disease, they look normal, still have the gallstones but they are small and not irritating the gallbladder and the hernia is there but only an inch long so they have decided against surgery because of the risks from complications of the diabetes that still isn't under control.

So all in all a crazy week at this house, cooped up because I can't stand the heat and the girls and Hayden are too young to be out for long, I never thought that I would say I can't wait for snow:)

I have a hugely busy weekend too Stacie, and with the heat I'm just not sure how much I can get done. I hate sitting down in my office basement, which is what I have to do for work since that's where the Internet connection is. No air conditioning down there so only in the mornings and late evenings for down there. Meanwhile I have a ton of yardwork and I'm just not getting to it--too hot. I've only been doing one load of laundry a day on weekends since it's so hot. Have put off errands too--too hot. It's all piling up for this weekend, but it's still too friggin' hot!!!!!

Whew, thanks Stacie, I feel so much better now!!!!

Nothing much going on here..just got back from visiting my new grandson (again)..friends were driving out there so I tagged along.

This is the start of "Hot August Nights" here in Reno. Will probably go downtown at see some of the old cars.

I think I remember you saying you had hit a plateau awhile back. I bet you're back to kicking butt again. Teresa, enjoy your movies. Wow, that's alot Katie, sounds like the snow will be around awhile. Try to stay warm and dry San, my son is in NH and he said the snow is insane. I heard more Sunday night/into Monday. Boo-Hiss! TGIF here too. Elery is on his way up for the weekend and he's bringing supper, that's a good thing. Tomorrow we're going out to visit my mother and I'm taking Amanda and the kids with me. Check up on the "old people", aka Dad and Stepmom, and do the regular chores then because Elery wants to go to church on Sunday. He wants to meet my pastor, he's shopping for someone to marry us, LOL. I keep telling him not to rush me.... Lori, no one notices those 10 hour days I put in either, but they sure sit up and mention it when I'm half an hour late because I have a dentist appointment or something, sheesh. They don't manage to add up those late days either, to find out that I worked 60 hours and got paid for 40, they just notice that half an hour. And have I mentioned that I just hate the media anyway? chase, I hope that septic problem is quick and cheap, this time of year, with all that snow, it's going to be a PIA, plus stinky. Ick. Terri, no Trader Joe's? Well, OK, I guess a new couch should make up for it. Michelle, we had 14 inches of snow here too, some is going to have to melt before we have room for any more! The rivers are already high here, it's so cold that the water doesn't soak into the frozen ground and we've already had flood warnings. In February! Ooops...I started a tgif thread too...GMTA!!! well I will copy and paste here and let the moderators delete my thread. Happy Friday and Happy Graduation to all our forum friends attending graduations and grad parties! Today is supposed to begin a heat wave here in Philly! High 90's for the next few days! YIKES!!! Its so nice out now...just came in for another little cup of joe. I was out admiring the handy work of a few wayward teens. They were bored I guess and they decided it would be so much fun to try to rip down the neighbors railroad tie retaining wall, What they could not rip down they wrote all over with sharpies. I was at work so I did not see anything but I know who it was....there is a bad element here-I suppose most blocks have some sort of problems like this. I think it may be time to take over the block captain job again-the lady who took over for me is not doing a good job-in fact one of her kids is involved with the bad element. On another note...today is Drews last exam. He has short days next week and done on Friday. I will be SO happy to see this year end!! I didn't post too much about it but its been a terrible year for Drew. He just didn't seem to adjust to high school life and my one time honor student is barely passing. Frank and I have been pulling our hair out trying to help him but he is just not motivated. Hopefully after having summer off he'll start 10th grade with a better attitude! Amy and I will hit the gym while he takes his last 2 tests. I am going to try to get my hair cut today too. My "girl" has gone out on early maternity leave so for this cut I may just go to a hair cuttery type place for a trim. Her baby is due in July so I'll have to have another trim befor she returns in Sept-Oct. Tonight I was invited to see my co-worker off to his prom. A co workers prom you ask?? Yes a prom! Theres a young boy who is really a cool kid. Turn out he is Charles BEST friend!! so my co worker is taking Charles sister (my great step neice) to the prom!! Charles does not want to go-more on that later. After that I was invited to a jewelry demonstration. I do not wear a lot of jewelry but I'll go and see...maybe I will get a jump start on holiday shopping?? Tomorrow I have to work early but I also get done early which is good as its the block clean up and I need to be here LOL!! Someone has to talk some sense into these people! LOL!! No really the block needs a good cleaning and we as a community have to work together to make this a safe neighborhood. Tomorrow night Frank and I are going out to dinner...nothing to celebrate really, well maybe celebrate just getting thru the past year LOL!! Sunday is Pocono Race day. The guys get up before the crack of dawn and set up camp on the infield of the Pocono Racetrack and watch the race. I went once and vowed to never go again!! LOL Its LOUD!! However I do help him get ready so he doesn't forget anything. I will no doubt have to work but I will treat myself to something sinful for dinner!! Well it is Sunday and I am just posting about Friday. Yesterday was my birthday and my folks came up and 3 of my sisters plus all my nephews (4 under the age of 4) so the girls had lots of fun and best of all everyone brought the food and I didn't have to cook anything I didn't want to, plus mom cleaned up afterward. I made the spinach dip and also bacon tomato dip. We had fun getting together and watching the Huskers win the game last night. The girls went home with my sis so just DH and Hayden and I until Tuesday, nice time to relax and catch up. We did some hollaring but got the house cleaned, even behind the coach lol, anyone know where all that stuff came from. I think we might meet the in-laws for a local towns fall festival and go to the parade and see some relatives of my MIL's husband. We see them lots and they consider us part of the family. Now just enjoying the quiet before DH and Hayden get up. Stacie girlsingardens

Well, TGIS. The heat has let up here in Brooklyn so I went to the park with my son. The intention was just to get in a walk before the heat ratcheted up again, but when we got as far ass the Boat House we found the Park Rangers putting canoes in the Lull Water - free for anyone who wanted one. Well off we shoved! The surface of the water was covered in bright green Duck Weed, evidently a byproduct of the floride in the water and photosynthesis. It is pretty once you understand that it is a natural process and not some form of pollution. We glided over lily pads with yellow blooms,and past duck families, little turtles, and under a lovely overpass. We kept our distance from the swans because the rangers warned us that they tend to attack the canoes. We watch Canada Geese landing and taking off in and over the water. The clouds were forming overhead for a heavy rain shower and we returned to the boat house just minutes before the deluge. My son left to meet a friend and I got soaked on the walk home but it was well worth it.

Imagine, I live in the middle of an urban environment and took a walk through the woods, past waterfalls and over a lake and then rowed a canoe across lily pads to where the turtles, ducks, geese and swans make their homes. Its a wonderland and I feel very lucky to live here.

At home we had a simple lunch of bottled borsht to which I added home roasted beets and a dollop of yogurt; rye bread, cheese and a little smoked salmon. Simple but perfect. Now its time to take an afternoon nap and see friends this evening.

I'll raise my iced coffee glass for a clink-clink and happy, peaceful weekend to all.

The heat actually let up a bit today too, so I was whining prematurely. We were without power for about two hours midday--I guess some animal flew into some conductor or something. Anyway, there was this terribly loud band like a cannon going off, and then no electricity. I opened all the windows and realized it was cooler outside than in my house! Everyone was out on the porch, like the old days, lol! I was taking a shower to get ready to go out to the store where it was air conditioned--just like the old days too, when the electricity came back on. So instead, I just goofed off some more today. Saturday is almost always my goof off day. I don't feel like going out.

Mimsic Brooklyn has some great attractions. My friend used to live a couple of blocks from the Botanic Gardens, they were SO FANTASTIC! A lot of great music in Brooklyn too. I heard Jean Pierre Rampal play at Queens College once.

Wow, I am not going to complain with all that you guys are putting up with. I am at our summer cottage in Guilford, CT (we arrived Monday) for the rest of august. I've been kayaking everyday and biking all around. My dh comes to visit a few times, so meal times have been wonderfully easy. I tend to go vegetarian when on my own, so dinner tonight was spicy peanut noodles with cucumbers and a side of tabuleh. The kids got chicken nuggets and rice. No a/c, sporadic internet service and no complaints. My kids are running feral here with packs of cousins that also have cottages. I see them when they are tired or hungry.

jococo: It sounds great at the Ct. beach house, especially the part about seeing the kids when they are tired or hungry.It sounds like when I was growing up - In the summertime we went out in the morning and came back in time for dinner. We rode bikes, played jump rope or jacks, read comic books and collected paper dolls. We went to a rec center at the local volunteer fire house for arts and crafts or shuffle board and did a lot of complaining about the heat and being bored. But we were on our own and out of our parents hair most of the time. Its refreshing to hear that some kids still get to do that.
