Blue can look great with it, as can layers of yellow a la Nancy Lancaster.

I have Hawthorne Yellow on my walls and sea blue area rugs over hardwood...i'm still having a hard time pulling it together. I have a white wood bed and pine furniture.

The only things I like to avoid in sunny yellow rooms are beige, muddied versions of other colors, and pink. I think beige always looks dirty in combination with clear yellow. And pink and yellow is too candy-baby-girlie for me.

Blue and white are classic and beautiful with yellow, and I like to throw in a little green and some good polished wood in such a scheme.

And I did a yellow room once with bright navy, rich auburn, and black, which looked strong and fresh.

I had a hard time pulling together our yellow-walled bedroom until I saw and liked this picture on Houzz. I added a rug with a good deal of coral in it, and it worked wonders.

I agree that blue is stunning with yellow. Our bedroom is a yellow that is bit lighter than your pic, but it's definitely a true lemon yellow! Have several blue & white porcelain pieces in the room, & use white matelasse bedding. We love the combination. This wall color was here when we moved in 6.5 years ago, & we have loved living with it! When we re-paint, we want to match it!

Good luck & enjoy your yellow. We feel that ours glows like candle-light at night & feels very soft. In the daytime, it is bright & cheerful, but as you say, not "too" sunny. It's a keeper!

I love blue with yellow--that's the direction I have gone with my yellow rooms for the most part. I have also done yellow and green; I think different shades of geen give different effects with yellow. I have also seen some lovely yellow rooms with some red accents.

Truthfully, I think most colors go well with yellow so I would go with an inspiration room or two to decide which direction to go.

Cranberry color tones might work.

This (not my pic) is my drapery fabric in a yellow room. The background is aqua. All these colors go great with my yellow walls.

I love yellow rooms and have lots of them over the (many) years. In the past, I have had lots of white in my yellow rooms with touches of pale green (celery) and some small touches of vibrant pink.

I totally agree with bronswynmom that best to avoid muddy colors, but there are so many other great choices, makes me want to go paint something yellow right now...

Laura, that's just the direction I think I'm going to try. I love blue and yellow, but it would require too much $$ and oomph to swing my rooms that way. I had green, tan and white before this, so I am planning to add lots of white and cream and see what I get. Wonderful pictures, all, thanks for posting.

I've never had a yellow room, but my BFF had her MB painted Straw Hat for many years~she paired it with lavender and it was very soft and feminine, but her DH didn't mind.

You picked a beautiful shade of yellow....I went with the blue and white in my yellow guest room...

These are 2 different bedrooms in our home; others are painted sage/olive. We chose to go with some brighter colors rather than more subdued tones. Actually, all of the rooms in our home have variations of olive green, yellow and red colors so that furniture, accent pieces and art work can be moved from room to room for some free "redecorating".

What colors are those in your guest room? I have been trying to find the right yellow and blue for my library for months and months and those look really good together.

I plan to accent with sand, orange and green with touches of lavender. The trim will be a cream color.

This is our mstr br. Some things have changed--- the light is gone from the fan, for one, and there's a white and green cabinet to the right of the bed. But the room has been painted Hawthorne yellow for seven years and the color scheme has always been green and white. We re-covered the chair last summer in a light green boiled wool with tiny flecks of yellow and blue, which don't come across very well. just wanted to show you a room of yellow and green that is about as different from Arts and Crafts style as possible :-) We've enjoyed our yellow bedroom.

The walls are BM Pale Moon and the ceiling is BM Cumulous Cotton.

GF who has very different taste from mine...she's into all this country antique stuff...painted her bedroom the same yellow and is very pleased with it.

I also went with blue and yellow in the outhouse....though the walls are a deeper BM man on the moon.

AnnieD-- you have an outhouse! You rock! Lovely room and very helpful pictures generally, friends. Kswl, I am going to search and see if I can find more pictures of your MBR-- my computer would only show one, which looks like it could be great for me since my couch is a similar color.

I think I would keep the white and distribution of colors similar to the picture and if I used another color at all, I would keep it soft with miniprints or pin dots in pillows, blankets, etc. I am not sure what you have in your room, but the your picture is beautiful and if I had a room like that, I might not be able to leave home in the mornings, so replicate that as best possible. JMHO. I LOVE YOUR PICTURE. It makes me want to go right out and buy a bucket of yellow and get working.

I did have one thought, though, and it isn't a big deal - next time you are wandering around with a paintbrush in your hand, you might want to paint the underside of the soffit to match the yellow wall rather than the ceiling. I think it emphasizes the break when you match those bits to the ceiling, whereas matching the wall makes the whole thing flow upward more seamlessly.

It's just a thought - your house is lovely.

I, too, may be heading to the paint store with a change in plans! Every time I see one of those beautiful soft yellow bedrooms, I am in love.

They've used a lot of white and cream, so I'm wondering why that's not working for you. I guess you don't want to post a picture, which is understandable.

If you look at the first pic on the right side, you'll see that the ceiling at that level continues into a wide hallway area which leads to the bedroom door, the door to the bath and the closet doors. You can just see the edge of a dressing table and stool there with the picture on the wall. So there's no place to actually break the paint color as it's all on one plane. I like the blue with the yellow so I'd rather not paint the entire ceiling the same yellow. In the room, it looks fine....I think the pic exaggerates it some....

If the hallway is contiguous only with the bedroom, I think you could paint that ceiling yellow if you wanted to. But I agree that you don't need a full yellow ceiling in your room.

Annie, I have a situation very similar in my kitchen. All my trim and cabinets have to remain the color they are because at one point they join with the molding from the hallway which leads to a very open public area and which hallway leads to the sleeping quarters and a small library.

Sure, I'll put up a picture. It's All Wrong, or at least a lot of it's wrong. I'd like to slipcover the chairs in ivory-- the couch would be great too, but I don't know if the exchequer is up for that. The little botanicals are too small-- I am picturing a large mirror with a pine or natural cherry frame, or maybe a set of three larger botanicals, or maybe a large landscape. The cotton sheers are arriving today-- maybe some pillows in scrumptious fabrics? I think the pinky toile pillows work. Anyway, more white, less green, plenty of wood, live with the rug since I don't think I can justify replacing it-- what do you think?

I have a sunshine yellow spare bedroom with white trim that has had a couple of accent colors in the 16 years we have been here. My favorite as the original 'iris room' when I used purple and lavender as accents. I used a couple of favorite iris prints as inspiration pieces and also had a needlepoint iris pillow on the bed. I've also seen turquoise used with lemon yellow that was very striking. Right now my accents are a paler turquoise and green and I'm not really crazy about it. Am probably going back to a brighter combo or re-painting altogether 'one day'.

My cotton voile PB sheers came. On the plus side, they soften light, are cozy, and screen the view of bulldozers and hardhats. On the minus side, they're pretty sweet and I'm not really sure. They weren't expensive as window treatments go but with three children to educate, I can't fling money around lightly. I have ruled out shutters as too much moral and financial strain (measuring! ordering! what if I don't like them!) I am eyeing bamboo shades at the moment. Would love curtains in a wonderful creamy ground with a not too insistent, large-scale floral on them, but finding and buying samples, etc is just too time consuming a process when I need my windows covered now. Plus, most of the tempting fabrics seem to be $50 yard and up.

Have been pretty frustrated decorating this room-- bourgeois suffering, as I remind myself. My other rooms came together without all this fuss. I blame the yellow. But I am determined to triumph in the end. The key seems to be a lot of white and medium or dark wood mixed in. Next up... slipcovers...

I think the yellow is lovely....the only problem I have with the room is I'd want more lamps...maybe a table with a lamp on it for the 2 occasional chairs and park the ladder back by the fireplace. I agree the pics are small for the space.

I think the color on the occasional chairs is fine. If you want, you can go with a tan or a gray on the sofa to make it more neutral. Best bet is to find a fabric you like to even use as throw pillows to pull the room together, then pull a neutral color out of the fabric for the sofa, so its use will last beyond your latest color scheme and into the next one.

I have a creamy yellow and white bedroom that I love. I have a tiny distressed table in light aqua with a few other aqua accents. Bedding is white with yellow print pillows and a yellow and white quilt at the foot of the bed. I have tried several different colors, but always go right back to the aqua as my accent color. I seem to prefer bedrooms in white and just one other color, with very little touches here and there of a third color. I am doing a guest room now that is white and blue, with just a little tan thrown in. I think I have gone thru my "lots of color stage".

I also have hawthorne yellow in my living room which only gets indirect light from the large kitchen windows (railroad apartment). White sofa and a painting whose primary colors are green. Several large green plants, which look so pretty against the yellow.

Here is our Hawthorne Yellow room. Grainy cell phone pic, but you get the idea. This was this past weekend when we were putting stuff back in the attic. I came out of the shower to this on my bed. LOL

I actually love the look of white with the yellow, and other touches of color (right now we have blue, but I have had cranberry, and granny smith green).

Yes, something more substantial over the sofa would be nice. Those are pretty botanicals though, & I hope you'll still use them in there. Yes, slipcovering those two wonderful chairs...great idea! I like the green sofa & the darling green wooden chair. Love your particular yellow paint color-it is perfect.

Can see why you'd want to do some tweaking here & there, but personally I find your room very inviting & attractive with the elements/colors you currently have! That's a room I would love to spend time in. Are you having us over for coffee soon?

I like yellow a lot, and all the colors already mentioned with it.

My very favorite yellow rooms, though, have lots of yellows blending together, with smaller areas ranging over into the creams, gold, oranges, ambers, red in small accents. Sumptuously yellow that's cheery in the morning but looks absolutely fantastic at night with pools of artificial light fading back into amber and ocher shadows. Creams and whites to lighten up as desired, although going that direction very far to me becomes fresh and sweet (also nice, but no longer my favorite for a bedroom). In any case, the whole set off with just enough small contrasts of dark brown or black.

If it were my room, I'd keep my eye out for that curtain fabric, one with a background color that blends with the walls.
