how to clean memory foam mattress topper?

so, we bought my oldest daughter a memory foam topper for her mattress. she loves it! but last night her younger sister snuck into her bed and had an accident. if it was the other younger sister, i would be sure it wasn't an accident, but this one, i'm sure it was. anyhoo, does anyone have any idea how to clean it? i am pretty sure i can't toss it in the washer, but if i can, PLEASE let me know!!!

I would spot clean it with lots of water and hand rinsing. Then squeeze it as dry as possible with clean towels then hang it outside to dry and air completely. It may take more than a day to complete, but bring it in each night to avoid rewetting it with dew.

I wash all kinds of weird things in my washing machines, but I think I would draw the line at that, both for fear of damaging the bedding, but also for fear of overwhelming my machine when it became fully saturated.

The memory foam has some kind of encapsulated water in the cells. So I don't think you can throw it in the washer. Also, the extra weight of the foam being wet may damage your washer.

Either spot clean and use a wet vac to pull the water out or a carpet cleaning/extracting system. Also, when you put it out to dry, don't leave it in freezing temperatures. If they freeze, it ruins the foam.

The topper is just a temporary fix. You will usually start to feel the discomfort again when in a couple of years. Usually people buy too hard of a mattress and they don't get the support that you need. When you lay on a mattress it should conform to you back or side. Lay on the mattress the same way that you sleep. Never go shopping for a mattress by price. Find the comfort that you like and then talk price with the salesperson. In general, I tell my customers to plan on spending at least $1200.00 for a new mattress. Again, don't use this as a guide to shop with, but more as an eye opener to be ready for the price. Most people would be happier on Platinum Dreams, Restonic, or Simmons. These are my favorite brands in order. I bought ours several years ago and we love it! I then went on to buy one for our guest room bed and one for our daughter's bed. When DS was in grad school, we bought him one for that bed. Two years ago, I sent one to my parents for their Florida home and they tell me that they've never slept better than they do on this topper. They went out and bought one for their Michigan place, as they said they couldn't sleep without one anymore (LOL!). All have the different comfort body zones. The only suggestion I can give you is to buy the 2" or 3" toppers and not the thicker ones. When I was looking for mine, several people on a decorating forum like this told that they'd purchased the thicker ones and none of their fitted sheets would fit over them. All of the ones we now have are 2 1/2" or 3" and the fitted sheets work fine with them. Lynn

I did a lot of research on true memory foam before purchasing, it was invented by NASA...and it adjust to your body temp. an it works I am always warm, Dh always cold but in bed just about perfect! and it perfectly aligns your body so no pressure points, have never seen 5Lb. density but mine is Tempurpedic at 4 Lb. density, have it prob. 4 years at least and it is exactly same as when we got it, and we are no light weights by any stretch of the imagination..we also got the Q pillows not core filled but solid mem foam and a real pillow not contured,we love our bed too, first thing Dh say's as we climb in is..."Hello bed" a friend is so sorry she got a pillowtop mattress, right before she discovered mem foam, I talked her into the pillows after spending a fortune on pillows for years and still having neck pain/headaches, now she takes it with her when she travels, and don't anyone try to take it away from her...LOL NO more pain! You can not beat the prices at O in any stores, you will simply get ripped off..

Sarahlee, It somewhat surprises me when you say that your topper is gel foam. When I was in the market for a new mattress I told all the sale people that I did not want foam because of its reputation for being hot to sleep on. I'm extremely bothered by being too warm when I sleep. One of the salespeople told me about the gel foam and how it is sensitive to your body temps and makes for a cooler sleep. I was skeptical, but with a money-back guarantee I did purchase it and have been very pleased. I have never been in the market for a topper, so I wasn't even aware that they made a gel foam one. It would seem that if it is a topper only, the gel layer can't be that thick. Seems like most replies you've gotten have been relative to regular foam, rather than the gel foam.

Friend of mine washed her topper in the washer and it came out in pieces. Later she found out that it shouldn't be washed but only spot cleaned. Something w/ the structure of the foam, it gets ruined when wet.I wonder about dry cleaning?

there is no "dry" in dry cleaning. It uses some type of solvent liquid.

i would imagine the same result as laundry

I worked in dry cleaners when I first came to USA. There are many different chemicals. We were spot clean the clothes w/ chemicals and then it went in the special "washer", but there was no water in it. It was more like some type of dryer w/ more chemicals added. I don't consider dry cleaning clean. I use to wash my husbands suits too! In the tub.They came out nice. I wash everything at home.

I would contact the company that made the bed topper and ask them what they recommend.
