Do you miss pink slime?

This morning one of the banner ads here on GW linked to a site to promote pink slime. There I learned all about how wonderful the stuff is, including the fact that beef mixed with slime tastes better than that without it. If you miss pink slime, included is a form letter that you can automatically shoot off to a host of supermarkets of your choosing, requesting that they please bring back this nutritious product. "It is what I want to feed my family."

Thanks for the link, FOAS. I don't see the banner ads so would have missed this "educational" piece.

I recognize that package of beef. I always wondered why ground beef had that appearance. Imagine I've even purchased a few packages of it over the years but just never could get that nagging question of why it looked like that out of my mind. So, thanks for the answer.

We started grinding our own ground meats about 3 years ago & have no intention of going back. We use WF's chuck roast for burgers, meatloaf, meatballs, etc. Also like the texture better. The FP does a great, quick job of the task. Grind our own chicken as well for chicken/apple sausage.

We don't eat many hot dog type products & we make our own sausages. If we have an occasional hot dog at the fair we're not going to feel ill that we might have eaten "pink slime" but sure aren't going to run out & fill the freezer with products containing it either.

First impressions are hard to eradicate & my first impression of "pink slime" was not too good. I understand that this processing plant is likely to go under & there will be some jobs lost but that's not going to change my mind that my family can live just fine without "pink slime" on our plates for dinner. If this stuff is made from "trimmings" that I probably would have tossed myself when preparing a large piece of meat for cooking it's unlikely I want them added back in somewhere else.

Never would eat that "meat in a plastic tube....yucky!!
I buy ground beef ground at the butcher's from meat trimmings, or undetermined fat content.....but it's all ground there....and often in short supply.

IMHO, While there MAY be in fact contaminates that may or may not have had something to do with the trees deaths, I don't believe that is what you are seeing here. If you note in your pictures that the center of the wood seems to be discolored darker and appears to be "wet". Also note that the pink coloration seems to be on the edge of that wet looks, or seems to be associated with decay in some photos. This leads me to believe this is a product of the process of breaking down the wood. MANY microorganism are colored, or produce or excrete pigments when certain conditions are meet. Fungi, Slim Molds, Cyanobacteria are all frequently to typically colored, and all would have members that would be very happy in the conditions of a decaying tree trunk. Just my $0.02 Arktrees

joelld, stinkhorn fungus isn't really harmful -- unsightly and smelly, yes -- but not harmful. I had them pop up in my garden last year and soon discovered how they earned their name. UGH!!! literally had to run clear across the yard to get away from the odor.Whatever you do, don't try to dig them up...that's what I tried to do the first time I spotted one of them in my yard and I ended up making that mad dash to get away from the stench. If you have a lot of decaying wood mulch in your garden it isn't unusual to have stinkhorn pop up in it...that's what I've read, anyway. It won't harm any neighboring plants...just your sense of smell. Blech! Renee

I have no idea what type of forger-me-nots showed up. They are pretty with blue flowers! And I have no idea what type of cat-o-nine tales I killed off. Though I do know we have conservation land on the other side of the river, and there is lots of cat-o-nine tails over there. (And I would much prefer the wildlife to stay on that side of the river!) The pond is nice. But expensive. I never realized how much work was involved to keep it as a pond, and not allow it to become a swamp! The fish friendly herbicides cost a small fortune. And it really limits what other fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides you can use on your property - so you have to buy the fish friendly ones of those as well. The pond has been having a tough year. We flooded back in the storms in March/April. The pond rose about 3-4 feet. All the runoff caused a fish kill. Then in early May, a 60' pine tree fell and landed in the pond. Which resulted in another fish kill. We had to have the tree removed, and the pond dredged from that. Now with the drought, the water level is a good foot below normal. Which means that it has lost it's normal inflow/outflow. So I'm not sure what type of impact that is going to have. At this point, we think we have wiped out most of the invasive plants. And we are trying to restore native plantings. We're hoping to get a little dock built this fall - just a little platform to sit on and watch the fish, frogs, and turtles. And to have a nice place to sit to put your skates on.

My aunt gave me my first lipstick when I was about 12. I still have the tube. It's 'Pyxie Pink', in a white enamel tube with a pastel flower print, made by Milkmaid, Inc. (Patterson, NJ) I don't think there was much actual color to it, but it *smelled good*. Maid_o_Cliff -- I've used dishwasher cleaner to get rid of a hard water 'ring' in a toilet. (Drain water from bowl; sprinkle on the cleaner; keep damp with wet paper toweling; flush.) Something I don't miss, but do remember is Sen-Sen. (Did you ever taste THAT?) I think the slogan was, "Cover up your tell-tale breath with Sen-Sen." (Great, now you don't smell of tobacco, you stink from their product! Kind of a tip-off, eh?)

Nope, there's never been any pink slime in MY beef, and I don't intend to start now. Truthfully, I don't really use much ground meat, as I don't care for the texture, with or without pink slime, not even the stuff I grind myself.

I feel bad for the people who worked in the pink slime factory and lost their jobs. It must have been unpleasant work, so I presume they really needed a job -- any job. I must have eaten a ton of that stuff in my life without knowing it.

For someone like me, who is never going to grind meat at home, the best way to avoid this is to take a chuck roast to the meat dep't. at the grocery store and ask them to grind it for you.

Nope, don't miss it at all. We have been grinding our own meat for hamburger and sausages for many years. Found out about Pink Slime while watching Anthony Bourdain on a television show years ago. No thanks. Don't want to eat something that has fallen on the floor and wasn't even good enough for dog food, but they will give it to humans. Pretty disgusting stuff. NancyLouise

Gross. I haven't bought meat from the grocery store in 3 years now. Never will again if I have to raise the meat myself. I buy grass fed beef and free range chickens and eggs from local farmers...whose farms I've been to.

We've gotten where we seldom eat out any more either.
