One, two, three: Miele W8440 Programming

Want more options? More water for rinsing? Reduce maximum spin? Special washing cycle for the people with allergies?

You've got it!

Now, letÂs start our "Teach Yourself Miele 8440 Programming in 24 second"!

1. Open the drum door.

2. Press and hold the "Pause" button until the washer shuts down.

3. Press and hold the "Start" button, close the drum door while holding the "Start" button.

4. After the "Start" button indicator flashes one time release the "Start" button.

5. Press the "Start" button five times (very important, you should start pressing button immediately after step 4) and hold on fifth until the display shows "programming mode" .

Bingo!

Display will show the very first programming option, "Reset", so you can always roll back all your programming & tweaking wrongdoings.

Now, as an equivalent of the first "Hello World" code, let's program Miele to add extra water in the rinsing cycle.

Press left menu button to scroll through the programming options until the "Water+" entry shows up.

Press the right menu button ( under "OK" on the display). You are now in the "Water+" submenu. Press the left button to scroll through the submenu. The following option will be available:

Water+

Extra Rinse

Water+/extra rinse

Back

Stop on the "Water+" and press the right button ("OK").

"Water+" will change to "Water+^"

Press the left button and scroll to the "Back", then press the right "OK" button, you will return to the Main Menu.

Scroll through the menu pressing the left button till the very last entry - "Exit", then press the right "OK" button.

Congratulations, you washer has been successfully reprogrammed, more water on the rinsing cycle, bigger numbers in your water bill.

P.S. Don't tweak with the options you don't understand, consult knowledgeable Miele support representative first. I also would not recommend to play with the country version, low water pressure option etc, use your common sense!

OMGosh!! Thank you, thank you thank you! I couldn't convince my local authorized Miele dealer to do this...they said they couldn't.

I also have some data that I've collected on the water temperatures for various cycles. I'm still working through it as I just got back home after taking delivery of my washing machine. So I'm just getting my washing done these past couple of days. I will post them soon.

mmm..... my washer was already set for water+/extra rinse. I know I've recorded 2 rinses for all loads except when I select "sensitive" as an option in which case I get a 3rd rinse.

wish I knew what some of the other selections meant. i wonder if there is a programming manual circulating.

We had a 240v Monogram Advantium before the fire that I loved, but the microwave wasn't the easiest to use with the dial (I just did the +30 button a bunch of times since it was quicker). I totally geeked out on the playing with the 4 heat choices in combination though and I had really good results most of the time. We replaced it with a Thermador Pro steam and I'm still getting used to it. I haven't really "cooked" anything yet, but as advertised, it heats up leftovers really well--so well things taste just as well the next day as the first. It doesn't reheat at microwave speed though so things take a while. The water is kinda putzy though. You aren't supposed to keep the tank full so you pretty much need to clean the oven and drain the tank after every use. I'm looking forward to having some time to play with it and learn to use it more. For a microwave, we got a small Panasonic Inverter for $100 at Costco and it is one of the best MVs I've ever used. It's wicked fast and actually can soften butter without melting it. I'm glad I didn't drop a grand on a fancy drawer unit like I was originally considering.

I would agree with your logic regarding the difference in our numbers on the 'High' spin of 900 vs 1200. Too much difference between 900 and 1400, and yes 900 doesn't seem all that high. Hopefully the tech will have answer. Interesting point on the "Kill-A-Watt" box. Will give it some thought. Your observation and report on the 'Comforters' cycle is impressive! I've observed it only twice and didn't recall the step-by-step sequence. I'm sure it will come with time. I washed a queen-sized mattress pad, not a comforter. How large of a comforter do you wash? I don't recall the dimensions, but Miele had given them for comforters. I thought it to be the size of a double bed, not queen which is what we have. I had the same issue with the machine starting, adding a small amount of water, then advancing to 'pause.' This happened about 4-5 times before the cycle eventually started without stopping. The point you brought out about the 'part that stays in the center isn't exposed to as much g-force' really makes sense. Something I hadn't previously given any thought to. At the end of my cycle, I did put it through a spin/drain just as you do. From here on out, I will first rearrange the mattress pad...thanks! :) We have observed the spring loaded door at the back of the main wash compartment. I believe dispenser drawer pops out during the water intake. Is this a normal action? At times the door can be pushed back in, at others not. Does your dispenser drawer react in this same manner by popping out about 1/8"? I've read other good reviews about the Sears laundry powder. I know powder is recommended over liquid. I myself find liquid too sticky. Is your non-chlorine bleach a powder? I also use Oxi-Clean with favorable results, sometimes adding it to the prewash...or heavily soiled I believe it's called. Previously you had asked if I got cycle descriptions from Miele. The answer is no. I asked if there was anything documented in which would describe each cycle. Same answer, 'no.' What I was told as far as amounts of water, cycles which lend more to cottons will use less water as they can take more agressive tumbling action, and those which would fall under a category of more delicate or light fabric would use more water, as water provides more cushioning for the clothing. We now have an appointment for the Miele tech to come out on Friday and check out our machine. Want to make sure the pause issues we've been having are checked out. Also, 'door blocked' fault has come up 3 times in the first 10 days so want that checked out as well. I am told the cool down cycle time can be incresed as well. Sometimes I find the clothing to be ever so slightly damp, and thought added a little longer cooldown could rectify that issue. Buying a new washer or dryer is sooo time consuming. I've literally spent hours observing these cycles (& calling customer service)...and Miele was our third set after returning both Whirlpool Duet and Electrolux! ;) Will let you know what we find out. Again, thanks for taking the time to enlighten us! :) AN ADDED NOTE: We are interested in observing an actual demonstration on the washer/dryer. I've contacted one of the showrooms and was told they do conduct them. I feel any tips or information learned is well worth it. Our Garmin tells us it's about 67 miles from home...a nice drive on a sunny spring day.

Weird. I once explained Rinse Process before but cannot find my reply anymore... Well, Rinse Process works from 140Â°F upwards - at least on the true European models. The temperature sensor measures the temperature rise during the first rinse. The increase is caused because the cold rinse water is "heated" by hot suds in the clothes remaining from the main wash. Once the temperature increase has stopped, the washer knows all the hot suds in the laundry have been diluted with fresh, cold water. The drain/spin kicks in and the final rinse follows. Since there isn't enough difference between the rinse water and the laundry's temp after a cooler wash, rinse process does not work. On Euro models, a lower-than-140Â°-wash will give three rinses rather than two. Alex

Which one Miele 1926 (used) washer vs Miele 1986 (newed)?

Wow what a decision. I have the 1986. When I was doing research back in 2002 I decided on the 1926. When buy time came the 1986 was there and I bought it in Jan 2003. There are differences. The 1926 will allow for 4 or 5 rinses. The 1986 will allow for 2 or 3 rinses, but ends up using the same amount of water. This is because the 1986 uses more water for each fill in the rinse plus I have mine programmed for higher fill rinses. The water can be up over the bottom of the door and into the glass while the clothes are lifted and then plunged into and through the water. A good looking rinse. The 1926 does the rinse and I think then does a slower spin between each rinse. The 1986 will rinse and then do a faster(not max) spin between the rinse. The 1926 lets you select the spin speed in rpm. The 1986 uses terms like low med high max, but these translate into the same spin speeds as found on the 1926. At first I was upset with the lack of rinses but found that 2 or 3 high fill rinses with spins between work just fine. If you use 3 rinses, the middle one will do short tumbles and longer pauses so that the clothes soak in the water. Also if I want additional rinses I can use the fine rinse cycle. This cycle provides two very high fill rinses, with the water for the last rinse being taken in through the fabric softener dispenser and you can use any spin speed you want. Jeans, Dress shirts. Perm Press works just as well in my opinion except that it will not give the same type of spin that Jeans, and dress shirts do. The speed will be there but the duration is not. Perm Press gives what I call half a..s spins but well...things don't require ironing. Silk...I use this cycle for silk shirts..it works great. I also use the wool cycle for wool sweaters....great. The 1926 defaults to extended, the 1986 defaults to quicker. I don't think the default quick cycle is the same as the rapid cycle on the 1926. I think the 1986 default cycle may be a bit better. Extended. when I first bought the washer I used Extended for white cotton all the time, and I would use a temp of 140F. Now I find that white cotton gets very clean using the default cycle and I use 120F or 140F if very dirty. If you use Extended each phase of the cycle is longer. However the length depends on the cycle you select, so less time will be added if you select extended for dedicates, than if you would have selected it for cottons. Here is one thing I don't think the 1926 has and that is fuzzy logic to determine load size. This is a major plus for me. The 1986 will determine the size of the load and then adjust the estimated wash time...So If I start a small load with an estimated time of 49 minutes, after a few minutes the machine will detect that it has a small load and drop minutes from each portion of the cycle....and still get everything clean. The shortest wash phase i've seen has been 10 minutes. Time reduction occurs when using the Extended option also. Also the machine will automatically add a rinse if needed, but this has only happened 1 or 2 times for me. The 203F cycle is something I really don't need. I only use 190F on items that do not contain spandex or polyester. If you subject these to temps much over 140F they will start to fall apart quickly. I will say though that when you use 190F and you stand near the machine you can hear the water near the boiling point during the tumbling pauses. You know that sound you hear in a pan when the water is really really hot. Prewash. You can use this option on almost any cycle. It starts with cold water, heats it a bit, and then drains it and the washer moves on to what ever cycle you have selected. This is very good for stains. So over all I am pleased with my 1986. Of course I didn't have the option of getting the 1926 but I am pleased with the machine I have and don't plan on getting another anytime soon. If I move..this washer goes with me too. I hope someone with the 1926 will reply and describe the operation so that you can get a good idea of each machine.

Well, I called Miele support yesterday and complained that one of my family members has a very sensitive skin and they reluctantly agreed to guide me through. They tried three times without any luck, I just couldn't enter into programming mode. Then I asked them to read their cheat sheet word by word, they refused, telling me that it's too complicated for the average customer, and repair man should call them from my house (I have a service appointment today, Miele technician is coming to align the drum door).

Well, after heaving such a great pleasure talking to Miele I started thinking what went wrong and eventually after several trials and errors found the right sequence (support guy just skipped one important step).

Just be careful, for example, Miele limits maximum spin speed to 1400 for US due to the weak floor structures, but the actual speed can be set up to 1600, which is just dangerous, especially if you washer was installed on the second floor.

Oh this is too funny. They limit the spin speed but it CAN go up to 1600 but too dangerous for U.S.A construction. This is probably the truth.

Oh, pish-tush, I've had my "old" 1918s with their default 1600 rpm max spins on a concrete basement floor, upstairs in a NYC brownstone apartment, and on the ground floors of two different pre-1900 wood-frame houses. And since it is the default spin speed, I rarely use anything less. All structures remained standing despite the high rpms. (What wusses.)

Thank you for posting the secret recipe. I'm itching to get my paws on one of the new machine's brains. For those with enquiring minds (and devious intentions) interested in playing around with the country code to get non-US cycle programming, but still retain US electrical service settings, you might see if one of the options is Venezuela. Last time I had my Fls (Miele and Asko) there, the electrical service was the same as the US........ (Disclaimer: I have no idea what that might actually do, it's just a thought I had when I read about the country code options; YMMV.)

Actually the maximum speed you can set is 2000 and the key words are "concrete basement floor" and "pre-1900 wood-frame houses". Different times, different building codes...

2000 rpm spin speed....can anyone tell more? very interested.anyone heard that it would void the warranty?and are the clothes ok and not damaged at this speed? any comments anyone?wanting to buy the W4840 but is it really necessary to spend that much on the matching dryer?yes might look cosmetically great but omg, thats a stack of $$$ for a dryer!

Well, consider two things that make a difference, drying is faster and temperatures are lower comparing to the regular dryers. All this happens due to the increased volume of air. Your laundry never gets overheated! So, does it worth the extra money? I think yes.

First, I wanted to thank flyingkite for starting this thread and giving all of us a 101 on how to tweak the w48xx.

Here are a few more things:

Â On my machine (bought on 11-14-2007) I need to press the "Start" button SEVEN times and hold on SEVENTHS until the display shows "programming mode".

If I only press it FIVE times as described above I get to the SERVICE MODE (some interesting information there).

In machines which gets you into programming mode by pressing FIVE times the start button, you will need THREE times to get you into SERVICE MODE.

Â I tried the EU (Country Setting) and ended up with RINSE-ONLY in Normal programming mode. Back in USA setting Â all works as said (except the temperature thing in normal mode Â)

I will keep you posted with anything new I will discover Â

BTW I will also post some feedback on the temperature issue in a separate thread.

I don't see any recent postings here so I will go back to the other thread that led me here. I just did my machine only put in water+/extra rinse. That was after I did water plus so we will see what I get. I had to do mine 8 times because I bought mine in June 2008. Very interesting settings. I wish as well that there was a book explaining all of this. All I want is 3 rinses at least for each setting other than wool and silk that I will never use anyway. Thanks again. So happy. Hope it worked.

I love this guide! thank you, I changed my water levels, got rinse plus etc. Now, do I have to reset every time I do a load of wash, or will these settings stay as is? is there a way to get the light to go on while the machine is washing? Thank you in advance.

The settings will stay as-is. I haven't found a way to keep the drum light on.
