Just bought a convection oven.

Because of this problem with rising prices of natural resources i went out and purchased a convection toaster oven. Its big enough to fit a store bought frozen pizza in there so for one person its great. It cooks in less time than a traditional oven. The best part about it is that it electric so no gas is used at all. I recommend them to anybody trying to cut down on their gas use during these times when you might want to conserve on gas and oil.

I've had a Sharp Carousel Microwave/Convection Oven since 2002 and love it because I can bake a panned loaf of bread in 20-minutes and NO preheating (25 minutes for 2 loaves).

For even MORE savings on utilities I use my two Solar Ovens as much as possible.

grainlady, I too have the Sharpe micro/conv and find I am using it less. Can you give me other ideas for uses? TIA

The only thing the Thermador didn't have was a convection fan. It was self clean, broil, timed bake, bake, micro, broil/micro, bake/micro with a low, medium or high setting for the microwave. I personally rarely used the microwave only setting since I had a stand alone microwave. From what I understand that is why it went out of favor with consumers - it was a poor micro-only oven. Now as to the design flaws of the built-in Jenn-Air convection/microwave, I'm going to be adding to this so I don't make any mistakes and misrepresent it. I rarely use the Jenn-Air convection/microwave any more. My biggest complaint is that it turns itself off. I'll preheat it, hear the bell that it reached temperature and when I'm finished prepping find the oven has turned off. It will only preheat for a certain amount of time and after that time has been reached, it will exhaust the heat from the oven. A second complaint is the temperature fluctuation - more frequently lower than higher. The temperature is displayed on the digital readout. Heaven forbid that you open the door to check on your food, it takes forever to re-reach the set temperature. The oven was half programmed correctly. The oven does permit one to set the convection/roast/microwave to any combination one would desire. It's the convection/bake/microwave that can't be set other than the reprogrammed settings. So the capability is there - just incomplete. There is one thing that we do use the oven for regularly and that is reheating pizza, pancakes and waffles on the crisper pan. If you are into convenience foods then this oven is for you. There are just two of us and we both cook so normally we would use the smaller convection/microwave oven more - we don't because of our frustration with the product. As I had said we did use the GE convection/microwave more than our full-sized oven. I will be adding to this post. There are more complaints. I just want to document them correctly.

Well, if it is any constellation....I've been doing alot of research on cast-iron cookware for the past few weeks. It started because of taking free cooking classes at Williams-Sonoma locally! I tend to rely on research, than personal experience. I did pickup 2 cuisinart pieces at TJMaxx for $60 & $80. 5qt and 8-qt oval. Found a great deal on Rachel Ray C/I 3.5 and 6.0 oval both for $68. Rachel Ray is made by Staub. I dislike China because of poor quality control, but a good company will tightly oversee qc in the states. Consumer Report rated Emerilware All-Clad very high and that is made in Japan. The money u save vs. STAUB or LC can extend your kitchen and buy if warranties don't cover they normally do. I am not one to buy just for a name or personality, I wish I had the means to buy LC -- it just isn't logical. We're getting the Wolf Combi Steam + Wall Oven. Haven't used them yet (a broken granite slab is pushing the install dates back), but our plan is that we'll probably use the steam oven most of the time, and the big oven just for holidays, or when we need a second oven or the broiler. Again, not speaking from experience just yet, but my understanding is that we'll probably use the steam oven for a lot of things that we currently do in the microwave (like reheating leftovers). My wife has never been a big microwave fan anyway, so we'll probably just continue with our small countertop model. I would personally rather leave out the drawer microwave and invest that money in a full-size traditional oven. I don't think Wolf ever said that their steam oven has broiler like capabilities. They do say that they can somehow brown the outside of meat with a combination of heat and steam. As long as you'll have at least one oven with a broiler though, I don't see that the lack of a broiler on the Wolf should sway your purchase decision. Finally, keep in mind that the Wolf 30" steam oven is really a 24" oven with a bigger faceplate that matches their traditional ovens. It only goes up to 450 degrees as well, so I'm not sure that your pizza stone will do you much good.

So, make a niche(s) with the proper electric service and size to have a built-in put in if you really need it to sell (but I bet you won't)--if you're planning to sell within three years, get the built-ins already, but otherwise, they're going to be just so many used appliances. If yours are truly ratty, you can buy new versions of each. If you WANT a speed oven, and intend to use it as such, that's another story. Go for it! Read through the manuals, etc. But I think you'll find that it's not at all the same thing as your Breville toaster oven. You can use the convection oven settings on a speed oven to perform some of the same functions, but it's a real oven, with limitations, not a toaster that tap dances. I sometimes use my speed oven the way others use a toaster oven--mainly for heating up frozen appetizers or reheating casseroles when other ovens are full, but my old (dead) toaster oven was beloved for making great toast, which a speed oven isn't, and not for other uses. I do zap sandwiches on MW mode, and once in awhile lightly defrost or melt, but if I used a microwave more, I wouldn't have such an expensive machine doing it. I agree with putting enough thought into a remodel that it won't limit resale, because you never know what the future will bring--thus make sure there's place for built-ins to be built into--but unless it's a flip, it should be designed for your own use and enjoyment, and you used the key words "heavily use" and "love".

Call the company and see if you can get another copy of the Cookbook that came with your oven. It has all kinds of recipes in it. Once you've used a recipe in the book, you can quickly translate it to one of your regular recipes, or use the recipes in the book as a guide-line for adjusting your regular recipes.

Panned Bread: Place the panned bread on the low rack which is sitting on the Carousel Turntable (the turntable is also a utensil itself). Low-Mix / 325Â°F / 20-25 minutes for one loaf (1 to 1.5 pound loaves), 25-30 minutes for 2 loaves. NO preheating.

You can place shaped breads (a braided bread or round "country" loaf) on the turntable (with or without a piece of parchment paper) and allow it to rise on the turntable. No preheating is needed to bake it. Bake for three-fourths of the time in your conventional recipe on LOW MIX (I usually reduce the temperature by 25Â°F).

Cookies: On the low rack (which sits on the carousel turntable) for one pan, or for two pans, place one pan of cookies on the carousel turntable, and another pan on the tall rack (which is perched on the turntable). Make sure the turntable is ON. For cookie sheets, I cover 12-inch round pizza pans with parchment paper. Make the dough balls about 3/4-inch big (or smaller), placed 2-inches apart. Preheat the oven / Bake 12-minutes at 350Â° / Convection Setting. I've found it takes less time to bake cookies after the first trays are done, so watch them carefully.

Baked Goods: Use the Low Mix setting for baked goods that require more than 20 minutes baking time. - Angel food and bundt cakes, quick breads and yeast breads and large muffins are examples of foods that work on this setting.

Convection: Ideal for foods requiring 20 minutes or less cooking time. Preheating is necessary with convection cooking. You can use two 6-cup muffin tins at the same time, place one on the carousel tray, place the other on the high rack. Make sure the turntable is ON.

A rectangular cake pan, large cookie sheet or 12-cup muffin pan are ideal for convection baking on the low rack with the turntable OFF.

I reduce the temperature by 25Â° and baking time to 25-50% from the typical oven temperature and time for the recipe.

I usually check things at 50% of the normal baking time and adjust from there. I make notes on my recipes for baking in the Sharp.

I love my regular little T.O. and had the same thought of my next one being convection too - although I still don't want a big one? A whole pizza - that must take up a lot of counter real estate?

It takes up about the same amount of space as a microwave. I have a microwave and a convection. I found space for both but if you want to conserve space you can get a two in one.

When my micro bit the big one I went after a micro/convection but wound up with a convection toaster oven. I love it, chicken nuggets in 30% less time :)

Just bought a convection oven.
