So many Pit Bulls up for very sad

For at least six weeks before I became a mother to Theodora (Teddy, pictured below), I checked out our area shelters in southeastern Virginia, looking for a small puppy to adopt. Surprisingly, they didn't have many at all. However, I found that about half of the adult dogs available for adoption were pit bulls and/or pit bull mixes. Another large proportion of the dogs were labs and/or lab mixes.

Then today at Craig's list, I got a little bored and went looking at pictures of dogs up for adoption and the great majority of those were also pit bulls and pit bull mixes. Is the breed *that* popular*??

Why are so many being given up, before they're even two years old?
