Here is what i'm fighting. The NW as all know slugs and snails are prolific and i just walked outside and found this,i have no idea what this plant was as it was growing side by side to my foxglove but all the same. Seeing it makes me want to weep.

I took everyone's advice and have set out all sort of traps. I'm hoping to see less of this so i'm crossing my fingers.

Deer damaged to a Western Red Cedar. It's a goner.

Deer damage to Red Alders. He was here last year in the background on the far right. These are going to be firewood, so not much real damage.

A bull elk turned this 12 ft. Japanese Maple in to a walking stick.
This was one of my finer selected seedlings. :-(

And broke this Serbian Spruce in half.

The bull elk also rubbed this Pinus bungeana pretty good. This is above my head! I had to hold the camera as high as I could.
Fencing is out of the question. I would have to fence 2100 ft., a lot of it on very steep ground. I'm up on a bluff. Limited funds, of course. My wife and I are 70 and retired.
All in all, I consider it a minor inconvenience. Just part of living in the country.

scarletsflowers, that picture is a little hard to tell but it appears to be something in the cucurbit family (cucumbers, squash, melons). Which, given how late in the season it is and the size of the plant it probably wouldn't have done much anyway before the first frost annihilates it.

Thank you all....it will take some time for me to get over this. You are all right, one would assume that a parent would feed the babies well enough before fledging for them to make it through the process or surly see that they were failing and needed to be fed a few more times to make it up to the sky. I have been over and over this in my head, I have so many questions that I know nobody will have the answers to. The first being how does a Tres get hit by a car on a nearly no traffice rural road, then it all snowballs from there. I am sure everybody feels this way wether it be a HOSP a HOWR, a racoon, ants, snake, poisioning or cat, it HURTS to lose one of our birds and to know it suffered and to think there MAY have been something more you could have done. I guess I should consider myself very lucky to have this be my first loss in 5 years. Thank you all again, nobody but you guys would really understand this heartache.

As a medical professional, it continues to frustrate me that we easily do heart transplants - but the treatment of depression is still very challenging. The incidence and prevalence of depression is significant. Many people will experience major clinical depression in their lifetime. Suicide is a complication of depression, just like infection is a complication of a laceration. Some get the complication, others don't. Yet talking about mental illness is so taboo. Depression is impaired brain chemistry - not a personal transgression. Insurance coverage for mental illness is so lacking. Insurance pays generously for for the complications of alcoholism, overeating, and smoking - things people have far more control over. Sorry for my soapbox rant, but in emergency medicine I see so many victims of suicide, both the individual and family & friends left behind. Hopefully his death will bring more attention to the need for better mental health care.

Ironically, none of these opinions of your cabinets' color are worth the time it took to type them. Monitors resolve colors differently, no matter how "true" they claim to be. Even "true" is different in peoples' eyes, because EYEs make colors different. So to you it's too yellow. I agree with taking a door back to wherever you got it and comparing it to the sample. If it's different, you might have a leg to stand on about changing them. I don't get the designer "letting" you have a color, as someone mentioned. The thing is, and we warn against this in every. single. discussion about paint color: you cannot choose a color without living with a large sample in your own lighting. White is a color. Just because it's painted on a door, doesn't mean you shouldn't live with it for a while. Some know this because it's my own oft repeated color story: attempting a gorgeous, gray/green color. Found it perfectly several different times. I painted at night. LOVED IT. With each color choice. However, in direct sunlight, it appeared teal or turquoise. Seemed my windows had a protective coating on them, which created a blue light. Those cabs not in direct sunlight remained the beautiful color(s) I'd chosen. I eventually settled on a cream with yellow it in, because combined with the light from the windows, it became sagey/green/gray. Go figure. Anyway, you don't have to live with it. 1) Change your lighting 2) Change your paint 4) Change your back splash Paint them Have them replaced. 6) Don't look at them. Reface them

The bark on the trunk of my Hibiscus detached from the trunk. SO SAD

The story sounds quite sad but what type of hibiscus are you growing? Do you know what caused the bark split? frost cracks? That type of damage tends to occur on the south side of plant. You may want to post several pictures from as many angles and including branches and upper/lower foliage to see if someone recognizes something. You can also take samples of fungus to a local plant nursery in a sealed transparent plastic bag.

Mike, looking at your tree's its terrible! I'd be so devastated - i guess there's not much you can do, looks like you have a nice chunk of land on you. I suppose in many ways you do have it worse than me. Deer, bucks and the lot at least the slugs i dispose of.

planetes, thank you for that ID i had found some squash seeds some bird had brought in and i thought nothing of it. But in that case that would be a terrible place for it to grow. Ha.

Mike, I didn't realize you have such a deer problem -- yet you have such a beautiful garden. I'm almost ready to buy plastic flowers to put some colour back into mine, the little darling Bambis are all over the place and I can't fence either. I'm getting to like Salvias more and more because they are left alone and add colour in sunny spots. Now, if I could find something colourful for the shade???

Scarlet, I just try not to grow plants slugs are attracted to. Easier said than done.

Dottie, yeah,...I have a deer problem , and elk too. So far I can live with it, but they're pushing their luck. They destroyed another tree the day before yesterday. A volunteer Doug Fir. Not a big deal. That's 6 they've killed or severely maimed, this season, and it's not over yet. Plus, I'm in a no shooting zone. The bull had been spotted with a yellow pail stuck on his antlers last week. This week it appears he lost it.
