Car problems - what are yours?

Last week I had a tire blowout. I had Toyo the manufacturer pick it up from my house to deal with the warranty. Then, a 2nd tire went yesterday - had a screw and a nail had imbedded in there. I had to call in to work and tell them I would be late. Called my insurance and had the tow truck sent to my house. Then I took the flat to the place where I bought it. The first guy said I needed a new tire but the manager said it could be fixed.

Community tire was giving me a hard time - so I took it to Discount Tire. Turns out the sidewall had blown out from being flat. They ordered a new tire but I did not have them put it on last night because I had to work at Dillards. So this morning I called warranty company from Community Tire and they said to have another place replace the bad tire voided my first warranty and that indeed I was covered for a screw, nail, blowout, etc.

So I went to Discount Tire and said I wanted this new tire but on a separate rim so I could use it as a spare rather than that donut which has been getting too much use and might go at any moment. Then I was going to take old tire on the original rim back to community tire and have them honor the warranty.

But turns out Discount Tire had the recycle place pick up my old tire last night. I made them call the recycle place and luckily my old tire had not been destroyed yet. Thank you holiday weekend!! I will get it back on Monday and then I will go to Community Tire and have them get me a brand new tire since the sidewall was also blown out and the old tire cannot be repaired. Whew!!

And that was my morning!

Bill Vincent, I believe, had posted a warning with some info a while back on how 'new' tires being sold were actually old ones that had been sitting around for too long. Apparently they still degrade and become unsafe to drive on, causing blowouts.

I know that with my new car, two or three tires went much too soon, and I'd never experienced such a thing with any of my other cars. So this may have explained what was going on.

So, with your new tires, be sure to check the printed numbers on the tire for their manufacture date to be sure you are getting new, ie, safe, tires. This article appeared to show how to check them but I didn't read it carefully. Might need to research a bit more.

First car... wow. 1970 VW Bug. Never tried jumping a curb, but it DID have a mind of it's own. It used to start honking the horn on it's own, blow fuses at will - boy did I get good at changing fuses, it would pop the tailpipe at will, I had to keep track of my miles because the gas gage fuse used to blow... if I had passengers in the back, the fender rubbed the tire... but all in all I loved that car - paid $1500 bucks for it and got every dime back out of it when I sold it 10 years later for a used 1987 Kawasaki Ninja... I used to pick up my girlfriends on that thing... parents LOOOOVED me! Still have the dang thing! NCTomatoman - wasn't a olive green pontiac tempest in My Cousin Vinnie??

Usually I switch between the public radio station and a local mostly "news" station which is unfortunately becoming more talk than news and info. But lately it's just too much political rhetoric that I wind up changing stations and when they're both polluted it goes off. There's a CD player in there but I don't use it. I usually have things on my mind and wind up making notes (on my digital recorder) so I don't forget. Only about a month until the election is over but then it's going to be too much holiday stuff on there. So, probably not listening to much. Have to rely on conversation when someone is with me. That can sometimes be tricky... :)

My Nissan Versa is not in the same quality category as the Subaru, I think (I previously drove a Legacy for many years, a very good car, except for the problem with the CV joints) or others, but I do vote enthusiastically for the interior room in this small hatchback. I have carried a dresser, two full bales of hay can go in, I can put my bicycle in the back without taking the front wheel off -- that was a major want. The MPG was the best for the lowest cost at the time that I was shopping -- and the seat is far more comfortable than my Mazda's. So it ticked all my boxes for very little $$. I'm actually on my second one. Its big flaw, to me, is that the seats don't fold flat to the floor, leaving a rather big step up in the middle of the cargo space. I'd recommend that you think about why you want a hatchback (what will you be hauling?) Look at the clearances -- some hatchbacks cut the door much narrower than the interior, which limits the size of items you can get in even if the interior space is there. Look at the height of the cargo space too, because wide and shallow isn't all that useful. Toyota has a new Corolla Hatchback -- I haven't seen one yet, but I am always positively inclined toward both Toyota and Honda.

What snow brush do you use for your car?

Earlier in the month I asked folks on this forum what their favorite snow brush/broom was. I was trying to figure out which one to buy for this winter. The one I used last winter scratched the paint off my car on some spots. So far, I think this broom called Snow Joe might be what I'll end up getting, unless someone can convince me otherwise. Has anyone here ever tried one? Going by the reviews on Amazon and Ebay, it's certainly not a perfect broom but it seems like it comes the closest to satisfying my needs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fst2kDDTO4M There's an original version, a 2019 version and an outdated version on Amazon. Has anyone had experience with all versions? If so, which one would you recommend? I don't care about having lights on the broom.

That's scary squirrel.

I had a flat tire a couple months ago. The car is supposed to have run-flat tires but they had been changed out, so they didn't run flat. Which is a problem because the car doesn't have a spare. So I had to call DH who called a tow truck who took the car to their shop and then drove me home so I could pick up our truck and drive to work. I was about 3 hours late. But the shop was great and my tires are perfect now.

Besides that, my only problem with my Mini Cooper convertible is that it's too cold to put the roof down. Stupid winter.

I drove for over 35 years without a flat tire. Never. Then I had three flats in the span of less than a year on a relatively new car, all due to nails in the tires. One was a blow-out on the Baltimore Beltway. All three tires had to be replaced.

Last week my 18 yo daughter said "oh by the way I think the car needs brakes." She has been using my car to go back and forth to college each day and I hadn't driven it in 2 months or so. Get in the car and it is metal on metal. So off to the mechanics and with all that needed to be done the bill was over $700. The mechanic then informs me that I must get new tires - all four are bald and dangerous to drive. The tires have only 28,000 miles on them. So I went directly to a Goodyear store and they told me that since they were considered to be performance tires they had a zero milage warranty - in other words - lady you're screwed. He did offer to give me a $50 credit on each tire for new zero milage tires and I said "thanks but no thanks". Needless to say, I went to the local Tire place that has the best prices around and $900 later I have new tires. Okay, so the charge bills are coming in January with all the Christmas gifts, plus now I have nearly 2 grand in car repairs and did I mention the 3 grand due on the house taxes??? When it rains, it really friggin' pours sometimes!

We also had a flat tire on thursday; DH drove in to a random tire shop and had it replaced,
The very next day it was flat again but the tire place was closed so now the car is at the dealership till they can look at it monday.
DH forgot we had free roadside assistance with audi, which is who he should have called in the first place instead of going to that tire place
( which looks like a dump ) .
