I like a radish sandwich also. But open faced on rye bread. Also, heavily buttered. Other than that, exactly like yours. :-) Did your dad teach you to drink good lager beer with it?

I've had my big meal for today, so I may have a peanut butter on whole wheat with a slab of white onion and some spicy mustard as a light meal.

There are so many other good sandwiches, I can't write about all of them. For example, I recently had a prime rib sandwich. It was delicious. I'll get out of the way and let others tell about theirs.

I need to put in a plug for Di Bella's subs, for those who can get them. I didn't realize until now that they had shops outside Rochester, NY. Everything about their operation and their food is superb, great bread, generous filling, lightning fast service. Rubino's, also in Rochester, makes a similar high quality sub as does Wegman's. But Di Bella's is the ultimate. When I'm in Rochester I always have one or two of these and always get the Godfather.

When we were little girls, my dad used to make us a special sweet sandwich if there was no dessert after dinner. He called it "a little carbarustrum with some frasinola on the side." It was a slice of soft white bread spread with butter, sprinkled with brown sugar and folded over. We loved it and he cracked us up every time 'cause we couldn't pronounce it.

When I was young, I used to dice up some sweet pickles and mix with miracle whip and eat it on white bread.

My dad likes peanut butter, miracle whip, red onion, and bologna with a lot of cracked pepper.

Two favorites beside the camel rider:
1. mayo and ketchup sandwich
2. whole salted peanuts and mayo sandwich

My favorites are a fried clam roll and lobster roll. The only time I get them is when I go home. No good seafood here in the middle of the country!

I've never heard of anyone else liking this one, but my mom and I used to make peanut butter, bologna and tomato sandwiches. I loved them. Of course, I haven't had one in a while so that may have changed a bit, but darn they ware tasty! :)

If I can get really good, garden ripened tomatoes, I like a tomato sandwich. Slab-sliced tomatoes with sweet onions (preferably Vidalia or Maui, but I'll take red if I can't get them), lettuce, mayonnaise, salt & pepper.

I do the radish sandwich too, on buttered baguette.

I've also been known to eat a scrambled egg & kimchee sandwich , with buttered toast for the bread...with or without bacon, sausage or ham for breakfast.

A friend of mine puts sharp cheddar cheese in her tuna sandwiches, which I thought quite strange until I tasted it.

Favourite by far is an in season, still warm from the sun, tomato, lettuce and Miracle Whip sandwich on fresh bread.....lots of salt and pepper.

Second would be homemade meatballs, bit of tomato sauce, provolone and hot peppers on a crusty roll.

Third would be Montreal smoked meat, shaved thin, piled high on rye with lots of neon mustard...dill on the side.

I like:

Fresh tomato on white bread with a tiny swipe of miracle whip on only one side of the bread.

Thick sliced bologna on white bread with another tiny swipe of miracle whip on both sides and stuffed with ruffled potato chips stuffed into the sandwich.

Peanut butter and banana sandwiches on lightly toasted wheat bread.

A slice of a very sharp cheddar cheese, sliced very sour pickles, a thick slice of a good ham on dark rye.

On rich bread like Health Nut or a thick moist dense wheat bread, thick slicesof liverwurst and thin slices of green apples.

Egg salad on white bread with romaine leaves.

Tuna salad on slices of toasted english muffin bread.

Lots of spicy pickled vegetables like cauliflower, green beans, chiles, peppers, or whatever I can get my hands on, and stuff it into toasted hoagie rolls. You have to eat them fast or they will mush out the roll.

Cold baked beans slightly mushed, but left mostly whole with yellow mustard on white bread.

And, you can put me into the real butter on white bread with tons of thin sliced radishes. I adore a good radish sandwich!

And, my other delicious cold sandwich is to take a leftover grilled brat, slice it, stick it on dark bread that has been toasted with some thin slices of red onion and a big spoonful of creamy cole slaw (kind of squeeze any extra moisture out of the cole slaw between two spoons.

Oh!

I almost forgot! I love, love, love cold ratatouille on leftover french or italian bread that has been sliced about 1/2 inch thick, open faced and oh is it good!

Ooooh, green apples with liverwurst, that sounds good!

I forgot about veggie sandwiches, too. When we do mixed veggies on the BBQ grill, I do love a sandwich with them the next day, sometimes with cheese, so I'd probably enjoy the ratatouille sandwich as well.

I forgot about baked bean sandwiches too, only I like pickle relish and spicy hot mustard in mine.

White bread, layer of mixed tuna/mayo, thick layer of potato chips, press, and eat. Yum.

I don't think I eat any odd sandwiches, but I do like to make odd substitutions for plain mayo, for sandwiches that have lettuce. Sometimes I use Roquefort salad dress or a fresh vinaigrette, but often I mix Louisiana hot sauce with mayo, and that helps the flavor a lot. I buy Red Rooster brand, which is cheap and has the best flavor - it's not as hot as Tabasco brand and therefore I can use more and get more of a chili flavor without too much heat.

When I make bean dip, I frequently put that on a turkey sandwich instead of mayo, or I might use guacamole. I also like to make my own sandwich rolls - the last batch I made was sourdough rye.

Interesting. This thread did immediately set off in the direction of "odd", didn't it? Odd sandwiches are fun and we all seem to have a favorite odd one, but what about Rubens, French Dips, Croque-mademoiselles, sliders, beef on weck, gyros and other classics. Does anybody make them,like them, or have their personally invented, non-idiosyncratic sandwich?

The only odd one I can think of that I like...and it isn't really odd.... is sliced cucumber, Miracle Whip, lettuce, salt and pepper on white Wonder bread.

My Dad loved those radish sandwiches and it was the only sandwich he would eat.

Sob, sob, I don't like sandwiches, odd or not, especially cold ones. I can eat a really good gyro.

Dark rye bread with liverwurst and slices of pickled red beet.
French bread with cream cheese and fresh chives.
I think I mentioned peanut butter and banana slices on the PBJ thread.

Rachelellen, I put a slice of ham in my tuna salad sandwiches. It has made more than one sandwich bar employee turn green around the gills.

Other sandwiches I like:

My current favourite is a baguette with ham, Havarti cheese, fried onions, bacon, tomatoes, chives and mayonnaise.
Whole wheat bread with Italian salad (in Iceland that means canned peas and carrots in mayonnaise) with a couple of slices of smoked lamb.
French bread with cream cheese and raspberry jam.
French bread with honey and butter.
French or whole wheat bread with fresh tomatoes and lots of butter.
Steak sandwich: spicy pieces of beef or lamb with fried onions and mushrooms.

Peanut butter, butter and dill pickles.
Braunsweiger, red onion and lots of black pepper.
A thick slice of good ham with Miracle Whip can't be beat (no veggies, no cheese, no mustard, just ham).
Those are about the only odd ones I eat.
Otherwise, I pretty much like them all.

Netla, I don't think that ham in a tuna sandwich sounds odd at all! I wouldn't have thought of it, but I'll have to try it.

I have been making my own sauerkraut for a while now, and have fallen in love with putting it in all kinds of sandwiches. Since I don't can it, but keep it in the fridge, it's nice and crispy and adds a really nice tang and moisture which means I can use a bit less mayo.

I've also been putting my bread and butter pickles in sandwiches, and roasted red bell peppers. Grilling onions slowly in a heavy pan with no oil makes another good way to add moisture without adding a lot of extra calories.

I bought some portobellos today, and some eggplant, so we're likely to have veggie sandwiches at some point in the next couple of days.

With lots of fresh zucchini around now, it must be time for my BIL Fred's Vegetable Sandwich:

sliced zucchini and onion, sauteed in olive oil
sliced ripe tomato
sharp cheddar cheese, sliced
grated Parmesan cheese
s&p
Italian seasoning herbs
mayonnaise
sturdy bread toasted, 2 slices per sandwich

spread one slice of bread with mayo, add a layer of cooked zucchini and onions, sprinkle with s&p, Italian herbs, Parmesan cheese

spread mayo on other slice of bread, top with sliced tomato, Italian seasonings, s&p, and sliced cheddar

Put both slices of bread under the broiler and broil until cheeses are bubbly. Put sandwich together and cut in half, serve immediately while still warm from the broiler.

I don't think I've seen this one posted yet. I recently discovered that I really like toasted rye bread spread with Nutella (I was desperate for a snack and found both in the pantry). I love the commingling of rye aroma/flavor with nutty chocolatiness. Of course, what doesn't taste good with Nutella?

About ten years or so ago I decided I wanted to eat the same thing at home that I had in restaurants...and that was the end of the simple sandwich for me! Now, it's artisan sourdough with goat cheese and red pepper, tomato bruschetta, flatbread with feta, hummus and grilled chicken, grilled pumpernickel Reubens with lots of sauerkraut, or tortilla wrap anything.
I haven't had a regular sandwich in years and don't miss them.

Fritos on any sandwich are fine by me, although I don't like Fritos on their own.

Chicken nuggets, ranch dressing, apple slices and sliced cucumber on a potato roll. Even though I don't like ranch dressing on anything else.

Crustless bread, homemade butter, little salt and pepper and vadalia onions.

This is one I eat a lot in the summer although I copied it from a local restaurant.

Thin pumpernickel bread buttered on the outside. Sprinkle with shredded Parmesan cheese. This is the outside of the sandwich.
Lightly toast.

Spread the inside with hummus and
add thin sliced red onion, tomato, baby spinach

I'm not much of a vegetarian but I like this sandwich as is.

Finally, a tomato in my garden ripened sufficiently for tomato sandwiches. I made them simply, which I believe is the best way. The bread was well toasted English muffins, because that's what I had on hand. Now that I've tried that I will do it again in the future. Other than that, just mayonnaise, a good layer of tomato and a sprinkle of salt. I just finished eating two. Delicious!

Sliced cucumber, vinegar, touch of sugar, S & P. Let it sit a while. Then make a sandwich with your choice of bread.
When garden produce is high -- I half or quarter green peppers, thick slices of onion rings, parsley, S&P, olive oil I also add Italian seasoning and nuke turning a few times till onions are clear and peppers are soft. While the onion/peppers are still warm, stack on roll of choice with thick slices of garden tomatoes, sliced cheese of choice, mayo. They are very messy but delicious. I have also added sliced turkey.

Small curd cottage cheese on whole grain bread with avocado and sprouts. Also good on rye bread. I think I put mayo on the avocado side. Also good with added tomato. Don't eat much anymore, cottage cheese too fattening, avacados too expensive, and can't get good sprouts or tomatoes.
