Lennox A/C + Furnace Quote

I just received a quote for a new gas furnace plus A/C unit for $9,400. Details are below. Am I getting ripped off? The price was higher than I was expecting. Thanks for your help.

A/C - Lennox XC15-036 SEER rating: "up to 17.00" according to literature. Sales rep said 15+ (http://www.lennox.com/products/overview.asp?model=XC15)

Furnace - Lennox G60VHV070 (http://www.lennox.com/products/overview.asp?model=G60V)

Other - Comfortstat 7000 thermostat, HC-10 filtration system (http://www.lennox.com/products/overview.asp?model=hc10), new metal supply plenum, drain pan with float switch, condensate pump.

This system is for the main level of my house, which is about 2,500 SF with high ceilings (14'). House is located in Atlanta.

I had a "catastrophic" refrigerant leak on my existing 10-year old builder grade A/C unit. I have been nursing the

A/C unit along for a couple of years with a slow leak, so I was expecting that I would need to replace it sometime soon. The sales consultant sold me on the merits of the variable speed furnace, and it added $2,000 to the A/C-only quote.

All I can say is my unit was 2k cheaper and I would never get a Lennox again. It has been nothing but a headache sens having it installed.

Dumaspup, most likely this is due to a poor installation and not the equipment itself.

Johnnywhit, not a bad system. Was a load calculation done to determine sizing? Was the ductwork examined to determine proper supply and return amounts? With that price tag, I sure hope so. Price is higher than what I would expect. Definitely get 2-3 quotes. See if you can get a quote on a Carrier Infinity system. It is a 2-stage system, which means first stage cooling has a lesser capacity and thus runs longer to remove more humidity. $2k is not a bad price for that furnace, but you might want to consider a more efficient 90+ model. It's up to you. PVC venting might be an issue and add more to the cost. I would also suggest asking for the Honeywell VisionPRO IAQ thermostat, which can slow the blower down to dehumidify on demand if configured properly. It's a nice thermostat (not that the Lennox one would be bad) and is a good choice for an upper-end system. See what your dealer thinks about it. Ask him if the Lennox thermostat can slow down the blower to dehumidify on demand.

When I first purchased the system earlier this year, I new nothing except that the upstairs was 12 degrees hotter than the downstairs when the AC was running. I found some HVAC sites similar to this one and learned how to solve the problem. During that process it was suggested by some seasoned pro's that I have my static pressure checked since it impacts air flow. My first response was "what the hell is static pressure?".... I learned quickly that static pressure can be viewed as "back pressure" on the blower fan. The more "back pressure" the harder the fan has to work to move the air. It is easier to push air through a large pipe versus a small one. Imagine blowing air throug a typical soda pop straw....then imagine trying to blow the same amount of air through one of those small red coffee stirrer staws. It is much harder to get the same amount or air through. If the ducts are grossly too small then the fan can't work hard enough to move the required air. While the fan is trying, it is burning much more electricity than what the salesman sold us on when he said it uses the wattage of a 75 watt light bulb. Also it is hard or the fan motor which could shorten it's life. It is very easy to check static pressure. I own a Dwyer Magnehelic gauge which could be bought off the internet (amazon.com charges ~$100 but it can be had for as low as ~$60). It is a simple gauge that you connect a small rubber tube to....and take measurments while the unit is running. Knowing your static is very useful especially with new HVAC systems because they come with tables that relate airflow, wattage-used, and temp-rise, to static pressure. It helps trouble shoot problemms and pinpoint duct issues. Static pressure issues are independent of the manufacturer. If the system is to large for your ducts then the large blower is going to have to work hard to try and move the air through the too small ducts.... How many returns do you have now? At least one on each floor? How do you filter your return air now? Here are the the advantages to a whole house air filter cabinet. Indoor air quality Protection of both evap coil and blower motor asbly at furnace And probably the most important, you don't have to rely on renters to change 1" filters on a regular basis which they are notorious for failing to perform this chore which can cause expensive service calls to correct. The filters in whole house media cabinet last up to one year. Put it on your calendar and give them the filter to replace. Changeout is easy and quick. As to thermostat, you should discuss with dealer. There are several good models to choose from including WR and HW. Not certain about the Lennox. You definitely do not want a timer controlling the staging but rather the thermostat based on demand. This is not an area to take a cheap shortcut like many dealers do and homeowners aren't educated enough to know the difference. Pricing seems reasonable. Suggest competitive quotes from another dealer though. IMO

a couple of observations.

you need a load calculation. I question a three ton for 2500 sq ft living space with high ceilings. You don't want to be undersized for Atlanta summer temps/humidity.

I think 80% furnaces even for hotlanta are dinosaurs unless paired with a high eff HP.

I am not a fan of Lennox especially HPs but even at that, the price quoted is on the high side.

The HW VP IAQ stat is the way to go with its "dehumidify on demand" feature.

Thanks, dumaspup, Tiger and Ryan. Sounds like I have some more research to do.

The Lennox thermostat does allow you to set the relative humidity level, not sure if it slows the blower down to do this or not.

Why negative on Lennox? Is it poor equipment, or just priced higher than comparable equipment from others?

Lennox is fine equipment. Most HVAC equipment is very similar as far as functionality and parts go. All brands can break. The key is finding the best company then going with their recommendation. Is your Lennox dealer a Premier dealer? Some areas can have difficulty getting parts for one brand or another, but if there are a multitude of Lennox dealers in your area, it might not be an issue. But overall Lennox is not poor equipment in my opinion. I think Tiger is referring to the performance ratings on some of the heat pumps, where the heating performance is low. Lennox OEM parts can be pricey from what I've heard. You're not looking at a heat pump, though. Do you know the coil model number? That will tell you the specific ratings for that matchup. Personally, at this point, I think Carrier has a good line of equipment, especially with the Infinity system. Make sure you ask for the tin-plated copper coil as it seems to hold up better than the standard copper coils from Carrier.

Get a quote on a Trane also.They have all aluminum coils inside and out.Top notch equipment installed correctly offcourse.Lenox has no market in my area anymore and parts have to be ordered that are not universal.

That may be true for Trane's outdoor units and Comfort Coils, but I think they're air handlers use copper coils... correct me if I'm wrong.
