Carrier furnace + a/c quote, opinions please

Is the following proposal a decent value for a Carrier furnace + a/c?

- Infinity ICS furnace, 95% AFUE 100k btu, model 58MVC100

- Performance 17 a/c, 16.5 SEER 3ton, model 24APA736

- Matching tin plated N coil, 4ton, model CNPVP4821ATA

AHRI website lists this a/c as 13.00 EER and 16.5 SEER, so everything should qualify for tax credit.

- Includes Infinity control, 4" media filter in attached cabinet, refrigeration lineset, etc, etc

- 10 yr parts and labor warranty on entire system

- Free four year maintenance plan from dealer

Quoted price: $8500.

Less $1000 Carrier cash back rebate and $1500 tax credit:

Effective final price: $6000.

This is for a 1.5 story house in Michigan Detroit area with about 1600 sqft main floor, 800 sqft upper floor, and 1600 sqft walk-out basement (800 sqft is finished). Need to replace the current old 100k btu 92% AFUE gas furnace and 2.5ton a/c, both of which worked well for many years.

What do you think? I am planning to finalize this soon as the Carrier cashback rebate is ending on June 30.

Three tons of cooling capacity seems woefully inadequate for all that sq footage IMO.

My bid for the exact system(although it was the 58MVC060 furnace and 2 ton 17 SEER w/2.5 ton coil) was very close to yours. It is also in the metro Detroit area.

This is a very nice system. You will not be disappointed assuming it is installed correctly. Did the salesman do a real Manual J calculation on his laptop or did you write some numbers on a piece of paper? In NJ you will need a Manual J and Manual S calcualtion in order to qualify for the Cool Advantage rebate. Ask for a copy of the report. Do you need an electronic air cleaner? The Carrier 4 inch media filter works well. Is is less expensive and no maintenace. Is the Carrier 10 year labor warranty included? What are your plans for the second floor HVAC system? If it is the same age then consider getting a quote ro replace both. You should be able to negotiate a better price on two systems.

I'm looking to install an Amana ASX14 split system with an AEPF air handler in New Haven, CT (just the AC system, not the furnace) to replace a 30-year old Carrier system that finally died. First, can you tell me your contractor's name and phone number? I have a company quoting me $6,760 (before electric company rebates) on a 1.5-ton system and would love to see what your contractor says. FYI, cooling area for our two-story brick house has been measured by various contractors to be between 960 and 1050 square feet and required BTUs in the range of 18,000-21,000. I've spoken with contractors in other states (NY and OH) who have told me that the prices I'm getting from CT area contractors are outrageous...double what they should be (according to them). I've received quotes on similar systems (both economy and mid-level models in the 13-15 SEER range) for Carrier, Trane, Bryant, Lennox, and Goodman from contractors who are highly recommended by their respective manufacturers. All of the systems come in between $6,600 (for the low end Goodman) to $11,000 (for a Carrier Infinity). These prices include compressor, air handler, materials, new electrical disconnect, new copper lineset (the current one is 35 years old), removal of old equipment, basic digital thermostat, and new pad for outside unit. Amana seems to have the best efficiency and warranty for the buck, but I wonder if a) the quotes are really outrageous and b) if I have any true recourse in Connecticut. Curious what others might think about these quotes and if there is any advice for me. Thanks very much!

Yes, when I refer to furnace, I meant the inside air handler. The quote for a matching furnace is $3800, which I am thinking I don't need to spend, since my current air handler (a 20 yr old Rheem) is working.I do have budget restrictions, so am trying to make a compromise to get a good system. I understand that I will not get optimized performance from the heat pump, but I'm thinking it will take a long time to make a furnace upgrade pay off for these reasons: -Quebec electricity is still affordable; I currently pay about $1500 a year for my 2 storey house -the 5 companies I called (all selling different brands) all stated there was no need to waste money when the current furnace still works, although they could sell it if I wanted it -the heatpump won't work at optimum efficiency, but it will still be a lot more efficient than what I have today, so should still see savings -the aircon will only be used for 3 months of the year -the furnace takes over heating when it gets colder than -10C, which is about 4 months of the year I admit I have not done any calculations to confirm my theory, but I will attempt to do so shortly. Have been out of town last week. My current furnace is a 20KW model, which does heat up in increments. The thermostat quoted is the White Rodgers IF70.

Thank you for the prompt reviews! Looks like Proposal #1 is the winner so far. Mike ��" the attic fan made a huge difference in second floor comfort. One of the best things I did. Glad your experience was the same. I will look into the 2 stage AC. I will not run the fan or put in an extra return for the humidity/temperature change issues. I will just continue to use my dehumidifiers. They do take care of the issue. I am going to plan on replacing the line set ��" it is easy to get to. What do you think about the drain pan/wet switch that will shut off the AC if there is a leak? Is it going to go off over nothing like a smoke detector I used to have and drive me nuts? Or is it a good idea? I might not have been clear about one thing. Both contractors told me to keep the old air filter set up (Spaceguard High Efficiency). It is the old Aprilaire humidifier that Contractor #1 said replace due to age/parts and Contractor #2 said keep it, parts are not going to be a problem and the only part that goes bad is the solenoid. Keep the old one or buy a new one? Contractor #1 is going to look into the Carrier early failure of heat exchangers settlement. It might only apply to the secondary heat exchanger. The primary one failed on my furnace. I meet with the last contractor tomorrow. I hope to have all the bids by the end of the week. My goal is all new equipment before I have to turn on the heat!

This is the quote I received for a Carrier Heat pump in Atlanta. Initial cost is a little higher due to being a heat pump, I think. Don't know if this helps but you may be able to use it for comparison.

good price, great system.

you might consider going down in size to the smaller 4 ton MVC furnace. get a load calc on heating. unless you like the idea of having the extra capacity that I doubt you would ever need or use.

and for confused 2010

I don't want any third party evap coil. ask dealer to provide a matching and tax credit qualifying "ATA" Carrier coil for your system and application.

Thanks for your feedback. I could not get a load calc done by any contractor, but the original 100k btu 92% AFUE furnace ran almost constantly during the coldest days (near 0 deg F), so I doubt if 80k btu would be enough. I did consider 90k btu, but there is no such Carrier infinity ICS furnace, so I was forced to go for 100k btu.
