It was really annoying earlier today but hasn't been a problem tonight.

Ann

It's still up on my screen.

I still have it too. I sent an email to the Angie's List people telling them that I would never support or do business with a company who uses such invasive and obnoxious advertising methods.

Like it will do any good...

Annie

Check the conversations side for more info. This is, I am afraid, the wave of the future, and it's up to us to be proactive with tools like AdBlock, etc.

I've had it tonight as well.

Just above the strip at the bottom is a tiny tab in blue writing that say's "Block". If you click it you get the option of blocking "ange's list". I did and that was the last time I saw it :-) I'm using Firefox, possibly that makes a difference.

Colleen, I don't get that block option. Not using Firefox though.

Had that darn thing today and tonight. Don't see a block option on FF either. Maybe it only works down under? LOL

I have been annoyed by it all day as well. No "block" option for me, either so I guess I am stuck with it.

Wouldn't be so bad if it was not EVERY TIME you open a thread or refresh the screen!

Maybe if we all sent an e-mail... Nah, it still wouldn't do any good.

Linda

In all the years I have been reading and posting on various websites, I have never been accosted by such an irritating ad format. My solution is to vacate the premises until the Angie's List ad does. See ya later.

It's gone!!!!!! Power to the people!!!

Well, this is the first time I've come to this forum for the last few days that it hasn't been there. I didn't even take the time to read the ad to see whose it was. I just exed it out. But, to have to do that every time a new page opens up is extremely annoying. I hate the up and down ads, too, that make the page move up and down. I've been thinking about saying my goodbyes to the wonderful people here, cause I'm sick of the invasive ads. It's hard for me to do that, though, so I keep coming back, although I haven't had much time here lately, anyway.

Tamara, are you listening?

Sally

My computer automatically updated the anti spam anti virus pop up blocker software.....and Angie's list is gone gone GONE!!

Thank goodness it's GONE now! I just hope it doesn't come back!

gone here too, thankfully...

Annie

obnoxious banner
much to the chagrin of cooks
finally gone away

Somebody tell Ruthanna she can come back now lol

Nice haiku, Robin

Obnoxious as h e l l! I use FF and don't get the "block" option either. My antivirus software won't let me download Adblock Plus and I can't figure out how to disable it long enough to download it.

It's gone!

I wonder who was the genius who thought advertising by coercion would win customers.

Jim

Please don't yell at me. :-)

I don't mind all those pop-ups. It's a good thing that adverttizers want to advertise here. That means we are important. It also means iVillage can earn income to keep the Forum going.

Even thought I have never been enticed to buy anything because of the pop-ups, I sometimes click on them just so iVillage can make some more money.

Sorry.

dcarch

Earthquakes, tsumamis, nuclear reactors blowing up, people running out of food and water. I'll take a pop up any day of the week. And GW does have to pay the bills!

Obviously you have no idea how internet advertising works. I believe that Tamara has said that they use Google to place and choose their advertising. It's not someone who has been solicited to place an ad as in print ads.
Also print ads and ads on the net to be successful don't obliterate the content that brought the prospective customer to the page.
There are ads to the right of the page that don't impinge on the content....they will pay the bills just fine. But any ad that offends the potential customer is worse than no ad at all.

My son is a senior account director with a very large digital marketing company....we talk his business often over coffee, scotch or a good meal.
Linda C....who is glad that obtrusive ad is gone.

Agree wholeheartedly. I think stationary banner ads are more than enough to pay the bills, and that the format of the ads is up to the hosting site. I'm sure the intrusive ones pay more, but it just strikes me as greedy. Not that it matters to Gardenweb, but I always wonder whether there's evidence that these things generate business. I've never heard anyone have a positive reaction to ads that make noise, follow you all over the screen, or open up the ad when you click on the close button. That last one is particularly infuriating-- great job-- you've boosted your click statistics, while alienating your target audience and ensuring that no one buys anything from you. It's reminiscent of sub-prime mortgages.

Such obnoxious marketing also seems like an especially odd choice for what amounts to a high-brow rating service. Generally, people who are willing to pay for something they can get for free are looking to avoid obnoxious advertising and general trashiness.

I don't object to advertising on this site in general. I've never posted against it until yesterday. I only object to the kind of ad which impinges on site content or forces me to take some action, as this one did.

If an advertiser wants favorable attention from me they will post an ad which is somehow attractive, interesting or helpful. There must be creative types in the advertising industry who are capable of producing such an ad.

Yes obviously. Here I go again, talking about something I have no knowledge and showing off my ignorance as usual.

What is blatantly shameful, and inexcusable, let me admit also, notwithstanding the fact that I have a great deal of business relationship with the media world, yet I have not the faintest idea as to how that environment operates.
What I mean is, I have done a lot of business with J. Walter Thompson, WPP, The Dilenschneider Group, KCS & A, Hill & Knowlton, The Ricochet Group, TNS Media Intelligence, AMF Market Research ------ etc.
I just had dinner with the former C.E.O of TNS, and his wife. I should have asked them some business questions so that I would not be as uninformed ------ but mostly we ended up talking about her operation.

Wouldn't it be funny if your son works for one of those companies?
----------------------

Let me be clear, I don't like any kind of advertisement, whether they are on the vertical side or on the horizontal bottom. But they are a fact of life. Angie's List didn't upset me because it didn't restrict my abilities to view the materials here. With my Windows Internet Explorer, I just use the Ctrl key and the center scroll knob and I can minimize the ad to very small size.

What Jimster said....:)

Several of us wrote to GW complaining about it, on another forum.
And I know Annie wrote to Angie's List directly.

It's gone now......the squeaky wheel, perhaps?

Yes, I did write Angie's List directly, including my email address. I told them that the advertising on the iVillage cooking forum was obnoxious and intrusive and that it was so offensive that I would never consider supporting them or doing business with them or any other company who finds it necessary to "smack me in the head" with such an advertisement.

Funny, I got no answer....

Annie

Whew! So very, very glad it is gone.

Linda

I have never seen it or any other type of ad on here. Guess I should be grateful, eh? Reason I probably didn't see it: I have Firefox and I downloaded AdBlock Plus from Firefox's support site. It's updated at least weekly.

As far as disabling an anti-virus software to allow a download: try right-clicking on the icon for your anti-virus software. (Use the icon on the bottom of your screen, not the shortcut on the desktop screen.) That may bring up some menu choices that include temporarily disabling the AV program to allow a download.

Donna

Now you know why I disappear for days at a time... I saw the annoying ad, read a post, saw the ad again, closed the browser and didn't return for two days... If it had come up again the very same thing would have happened.

I have enough stress in my life I do not need Pop-ups.

For the record I will click on stationary banner ads if they interest me but I will NEVER, EVER FOR ANY REASON CLICK ON A POP-UP!

I don't know how it works in other browsers but with Internet Explorer 8, on the right of the lower bar, as you're changing pages, you will see the web pages that are being loaded on to your computer... You'll notice that when you're on GardenWeb there are many ad sites also being placed on your computer...
