I joined AL last year after a nightmare experience with a GC recommended by a friend. I've found it really helpful and I used AL to find the company that is doing my kitchen remodel. The thing that impresses me most about AL is that the contractors are really aware of their reviews and status. I always mention that I'm a subscriber and leave reviews. It also wasn't expensive in my area (Seattle) and was just over $20 for a year (or was it for two years?). Anyway, it wasn't expensive. I've also used them to find a plumber, electrician and septic service.

Don't forget to check on their license to make sure it is valid and that their insurance is up to date. Just google the contractor's licensing board for your state. You can also check their status with the Better Business Bureau. Amazes me how often licenses have been suspended or revoked.
