We had some lovely rich English butters when we lived in Europe. Kinda spoils ya for the cheap stuff here.

I also had never had butter used instead of mayo or mustard on a sandwich until I lived in Europe. Oh MY! What a revelation for little ole me. Sandwiches purchased from a street vendor with excellent butter, roast chicken, sliced cucumber (something else I'd never tried) along with the regular cast of sandwich filling characters....one of my favorite memories...(too many of my travel memories are food related. lol)

I may pick up some Irish or English butter while I'm town tomorrow. You've made me hungry for it. :0)

I don't know what kind of butter it was, but we stayed at a Mennonite Bed and Breakfast and for breakfast she served this wonderful fluffy egg dish, sliced tomatoes picked from her garden that morning, and homemade english muffin toast with this butter that I could not stop eating. It was so creamy and sweet. She served other stuff too but that was the stuff I kept eating...

The best I've had was the stuff we made when I was a kid, churned ourselves from the cream skimmed off the milk.

I understand that the European butter is higher in butterfat than the stuff we get here, and it may be that the Amish butter is too.

I can buy Kate's butter here, and Irish butter as well as Amish butter. I like the Amish butter here the best. I am a devotee of butter. Don't use it often, but when I do I want the real thing.

Hands down the best butter I've ever had is French butter and I always kept it in the house when we were living in Holland.

My favorite sandwich with butter is sturdy white bread, slathered with French butter and thinly sliced ham.

When I was growing up, my grandmother from Ohio made memorable sandwiches of homemade white bread, thickly slathered with butter and layers of freshly picked soft, young leaf lettuce.

I still remember them.

Best butter I've ever had was the butter I made myself from high butterfat organic cream which I get from a local farm.

The slogan on their bottles is, "Our cows may be on grass but they are not on drugs".

Thanks for the wonderful memory. When we lived in Germany and Scotland, we were so spoiled with local, and Danish and Netherlands butter. Too Die For!

Speaking of butter as a sandwich filling, here is a sandwich where butter plays an equal role with the other ingredients.

Spread a slice of good pumpernickel thickly with butter. "Shingle" that with thin slices of radish. Simple and very good, especially when accompanied by beer.

The best commercial butter I've had is Vermont Butter & Cheese Creamery's cultured butter, which we can't actually get here very often. Good thing, because I can go without eating other butter. :)

When I was just a young girl, my brother and I would pick blackberries on a farm that belonged to another friends family. Since it was blackberry season, it was always hot and when we got back to their house the mother would give us graham crackers spread with butter straight from the springhouse. Oh my, how good they were! I often fix them now but there's no comparison to the way they tasted then.

Butter in France. The butter in Ireland is a close second.

Cultured butter is what you usually get in Europe. I like it for table butter, not so much for cooking.

Love Irish butter, amazing stuff. Second for me would be Danish......but very hard to come by.

I have always buttered my bread for sandwiches, even peanut butter sandwiches. Maybe it was becasue butter was such a treat. It wasn't until I was in my 20's that it dawned on me that people didn't always use butter on their sandwiches.......no accounting for taste!

I still butter my bread for sandwiches but funnily my kids don't.

I also grew up with buttered sandwiches. I sorta thought I was the only one putting butter on a peanut butter sandwich! lol

When my dtr was in school in Ireland, she told us how good her housemother's homemade bread and butter was. She couldn't get enough of it. I had never heard of Irish butter but saw it in the store one day. Oh My. Big difference. If I ever see Amish butter, I'll be sure to buy it.

I'll have to check our local Amish store for butter now, you guys do know that?

My family has always buttered peanut butter sandwiches too, Dad especially liked lots of butter, and lots of peanut butter, I'm not sure what purpose the bread served, LOL, other than a vehicle for the other stuff.

Ashley also butters her peanut butter sandwiches, but that's the only one that gets butter.

Hey, in my family we put butter on EVERYTHING, because we churned our own butter so it was always available. Yup, we buttered saltine crackers, banana/pumpkin/any other quick bread, muffins, biscuits, toast, peanut butter sandwiches. Now I know why my cholesterol is high!

A buttered saltine dunked into a bowl of homemade tomato soup is still delicious, though.

Annie, I remember eating butter peanut butter sandwiches when I was a kid. It was soooo good! But now I look at how much fat I put on a piece of bread, it's pretty scary! LOL

Me too Annie! Today I stopped at our neighborhood produce stand that carries Amish cheeses on the off chance they had butter. Sure enough, Amish butter.

As a side note, I had the kids and we were all thirsty so I got a quart of OJ out of the cooler when we got to the market. OMG!! It was the best OJ I have ever ever tasted! The babies and I finished off the whole jug while shopping. I've lived in FLA all my life and never had any so good. I'm thinking it was the extra cold weather we had this winter. It's fresh squeezed on premise from their trees. I'm going back to get some whole oranges (they are Honey Murcotts) to make marmalade.

I want to know what is cultured butter???
