One of the coolest hints received when I started using my scale was to use the "tare" command. For instance, put a bowl on the scale and press tare; add 7 grams of salt, press tare (which returns the weight to zero); add 454 grams of flour, press tare; add 65 grams of sugar, press tare; and so on without ever bothering to empty the bowl!! This method is really simple and a significant time saver when you are measuring or weighing several dry ingredients that will be combined immediately anyway. It is especially good to weigh flour. You can be consistent and don't have to worry about not compressing it and getting to much into your cup measure. Have fun with your scale. I still smile when I get mine out which I always do when I make bread or any other baked goods. I THINK I got the hint about using the tare button (which everyone else probably already knew!! from the Smitten Kitchen website, which is a fun read. I linked it below. After careful consideraton, when I had to replace my first digital electronic scale, this is what I chose: (see the link) My reasons were that it has the "tare" function, is easy to keep clean, and also has the ability to change the weighing units from ounces to grams, so you can use all recipes without worrying about conversions. Also the button for this is accessible and you can change at any time, even when weighing- some other scales you can option ounces or grams but the switch is underneath which is hardly convenient. I tasted the sauerkraut today, as we just got back from vacation, and it tasted a bit salty - mainly because I was unable to measure the salt accurately. In the future, I will make sure to add exactly the right amount of salt, and now that I have a jeweler's scale, I should be able to. The flavor was otherwise very good, especially with the caraway, and it had a fair amount of sour flavor to it, but I think it could have gone a bit longer. It has a very nice crunch to it. Anyway, I added a bit of distilled water to the jar I opened to dilute the salt flavor a bit and stored it in the fridge. I'm letting the other jar go for a few more days. It will probably take me a while to eat this much sauerkraut, and I do not want to keep it in the fridge all that long. I do like it a lot and am looking forward to making more fermented vegetables. It should not have taken me this long to start making this!

I have Ozeri for most uses, but I also have an Amir jewelry scale for precise weighing of smaller quantities - especially helpful for measuring salt, yeast, etc. or anything that is in a small amount. One scale is not enough. I weigh all my ingredients (except water) when making pizza dough, partly because I now make smaller portions of dough at a time, for smaller pizzas. I find it extremely easy to make a small amount of pizza dough and prefer this to storing leftover dough, although sometimes I like to do that as well, as it can improve the flavor.

I have a Salter. I like it because you can zero-out a bowl or plate to still get an accurate reading of your ingredients.

Salter and Polder brands have very accurate scales. They are easy to use and come in different sizes also. NancyLouise

Another Salter fan. I also have a non-electric SOEHNLE my daughter sent me from Germany many years ago, and it's still a favorite because it has a large bowl with it. Even with the bowl on the scale, you can still READ the scale and I use it all the time for scaling dough for loaves of bread.

If you have a Tuesday Morning store near you, they often have digital kitchen scales at great prices.

I love mine too! What ever you get be sure you can zero out the weight of the bowl or measuring cup.

Hey Terri we have an Oldwillknots too.

I would make sure the scale goes up as high as you want. Our oldwillknots only does a couple of pounds (DH uses it for coffee), so I have a another non-digital that will do way higher, I think like 15 lbs.

Oh, yeah, and be sure to use your BB&B 20% off coupons.

And once more, I'll share the hint that I got from Cook's Illustrated many years ago. Put your scale into a large zip-lock bag, zip it up, and leave it there. You can use it just fine when it's in the bag, everything works just fine thru the plastic. You only take it out to change the batteries.

I've got a weight watchers scale, (a slightly older one that doesn't calculate WW Points) and it serves my purpose.

My Old Will is actually a postal scale. I bought it for making candles..but find I use it for postage and in the kitchen too. It goes up to 35lbs and down to .10 oz and does grams as well. And zero's out.

I recently bought a kitchen scales and love it.
It is a My Weigh 7001DX and it has great features.
It can also be used for postage.
The capacity is 15.4 lbs and can weigh is grams, kilograms, pounds, ounces and pounds and pounds using a decimal point.
It runs of three AAA batteries or an adapter you can purchase. (I wish I would have.)
It has a tare feature and you can zero it in at each ingredient without having to remove the container from the top. It comes with a 30 year guarantee.
It has a adjustable back lighting feature and a hold button so if your package is too large to view the screen, you can push hold, remove the package and still see the weight.
It comes with the batteries, a fitted plastic bowl of good size, a holder for mail and a holder for tube mailing.
I use it daily.....baking, portion control, packages and just playing around. I think with shipping it was $41.00.)
Someone here suggested putting into a plastic baggie to keep it clean.....love that suggestion
I made some whole wheat walnut bread using grams and it came out perfectly. I love being able to weigh the finished dough so I can use the correct bread pan. (Thanks to Grainlady.)
