review your kitchen scales please

Hello,

I am going to buy a digital kitchen scale today and an looking for reviews. What kind do you have? I am looking at either a salter or cuisinart both have 11lb capacity and are around 40$ I don't want to spend much over 50$ and am not looking to use it for baking much, mostly for weighing out meats and cheese and for portion control. Does anyone have a recomendation?

I've had the little Polder scale linked below for about 3 years. It's a nifty one. I'm very happy with it in every way. Polder has some other models, including a black and stainless version of this one.

thanks for the feedback so far. I was so excited to put the plans on here I forgot some details. there will be a full basement, we're planning on putting the garage in there, under the kitchen side. The original house had a dumbwaiter on that side of the house to take groceries and such up. I was also thinking of putting a coat closet on the front side of the stairs, the whole stairs issue has been super complicated trying to go up so far, and not use a ton of space for them. A drop zone is a definate must, I use the kitchen table for that and the other 1/2 has a chest and a desk in the front door. We like to think that we are tidy but make a mess too. Most likely there will be some built ins in the living room too, any suggestions? we're hoping to do that room in wood paneling. The walk in pantry is something I knew you all would say that I needed. Any ideas on how to get one in the space. At the front of the kitchen, closest to the dining room, we have a wet bar/butlers pantry area. In our current house that is one of the most used spots and seems more valuable space wise. Land is close to asheville NC, site elevation is about 4ooo ft. So it's pretty high up for here. The living room faces south. Climate is moderate, we get all seasons up there. The one thing that I'm not sure of is how brutal the winters will be, they have been changing a lot lately. We don't need screen porches, there are not any flying insects at that elevation. Sorry for the delay in responding; I was away till this morning. bmorepanic: Thank you for taking the time to rework the plan. The hot water rads never get too hot so we're ok that way. Silly I know... I admit that the reason I didn't want to go around the corner with cabinetry etc was to keep that end wall clear to have a place to display my artwork. We do need 2 chairs & table. Currently we have a 54" round table (pre this house purchase) with 2 chairs and it is a very tight fit with a utility cart too behind the north chair along the long wall. Definitely a tight fit. We've been living with it for 7 1/2 years so downsizing to a 28" square bistro style will feel positively spacious! I close the door when seated at the table, but have thought of putting in a pocket door instead. David: I hadn't thought of an island 3 different widths. I'll give it a try. laxsupermom: Due to placement of stairs to the basement & to upstairs attic/loft bedroom the DR door can't be moved over. The appliances have all been ordered. I went with the KA convection micro/oven combo for the features of having a dual oven without having to purchase a double. buehl: I don't mind at all the personal question. I realize I should have given more background. My DH & I are empty nesters (mid 50's). Our 2 children (1 grandchild - 2yrs) live at a distance and visits to here are about 4 times a year for a weekend duration. I have a non-functioning ankle (fusion or ankle replacement hopefully in my future). This causes issue with inability to bend correctly from the knee to reach down & lifting. A raised oven will be so much easier & safer. This injury also causes instability in balance, so having to move only a couple of steps when carrying anything hot like pasta water to dump in the sink is important. A place to sit to chop veggies etc is necessary from time to time. jejvtr: Good question about soundproofing, but not an issue. The music studio is only a couple of steps down from the kitchen level, cinderblock wall with the hallway in between and a door on each side. It is almost completely soundproof. lascatx: I mixed up my dates and the cabinet guy comes next Saturday. It's good the hear from someone who has lived with a similar setup. Even though I'm the only cook, there is at times 2 of us trying to do things in there at the same time. Thank you everyone. I agree, switch the stove and fridge from the first to the second. I have a 10 1/2x15 1/2 kitchen and think it is plenty big! I also have two windows as we have no side neighbors (well, an elementary school). The size is quite adequate, esp with that nice, open island. You could always make the island bigger if you don't think you'll have enough storage. I sometimes look at the huge kitchen and think about how many steps they must take when making a meal! I've got 3 kids and make almost every meal at home, so I'd say your kitchen is a fine size.

I have a very similar space and tried and tried as you are to locate the sink and stove on the same run and it just couldn't happen without cramping and majorly sacrificing function. We ended up with our main and only sink in the island. I was hesitant I really was but it really has allowed effecient use of space and keeps the auxiliary traffic out. We have 2 boys and use our island all the time for all sorts of things - snacks, wrapping presents, homework. Having the sink in there has not impeded any of those things. I know you said you really didn't want to do that but to sacrifice functionality to avoid it you might want to really think hard on it before you get too far. On the other hand if you can squeeze more length in maybe you can do it - but then I'd want a prep sink on the island, a water source there somewhere even if it's a smaller one. Our island is 9' long and has room for 4 stools on the long end and one on the short side. It houses the sink, dw, trash and a 4 drawer stack. We have a decent over hang, about 16" which makes seating comfortable. I like green designs - our MW is right by the fridge and that works well and usually those 2 appliances are used right in succession - no crossing zones to get to them. Good luck! It is so tough to get everything just so! If only I'd have analyzed the rest of the house as much as the kitchen! ;O

A Salter fan here. I often see them for great prices at Tuesday Morning, if you happen to have one of those stores near you.

I got mine years ago from Old Will..
It will weigh from 10th ounce to 35lbs.
I love it.
Mine is a postal scale that I use for candle making, kitchen stuff and postal stuff. It had an AC cord that I used for years..til one day It "sheared" off...and now I just use the 9v battery..

I've got a Salter 3007 Aquatronic scale and I am pleased with it. It weighs in pounds/oz or grams which I like, is easy to read, easy to clean, low profile and you can zero out the container you are using before adding your flour, sugar, etc. I can weigh as little as 14 grams when I'm packaging up dried sourdough starter.

Bought it from Amazon, probably. No complaints.

I recently bought a MyWeight 7001DX food and postal scales from Amazon. The total cost including delivery was about $41.
It has a 15 pound capacity, weighs in grams, kilograms, pounds and ounces. I really like it because if using pounds it comes out as pounds and a percent of pounds and if you use ounces you will get pounds and ounces. It runs on AAA batteries which are included with the purchase but I would opt to purchase the adapter. (I didn't, but wish I would have although the batteries are still doing great.)
Other features I like are tare weight, a hold button, a lighted, adjustable backlit display and a 30 year guarantee.
It also includes a letter holder, an expansion bowl and a mailing tube holder.
I have found it very accurate and use it almost every day for something. Love being able to weigh packages, etc. so I can order postage on line.
Good luck with what you purchase.

I have the exact scale that Carol has. I just got it about a week ago, based on recommendations here. I hated my previous scale--especially the auto-turnoff, which you couldn't override and used to shut itself off while I was in the middle of weighing something. I love the new one so far. Mine was purchased from OldWillKnott on eBay, for about $33 with shipping, and the seller was very friendly and helpful.

I had a Salter for years but switched to a Myweigh scale (which Old Will sells) and have never regretted it.

Originally I bought it through the MyWeigh site but now all are sold through authorized sellers. OldWill is one of them.

You can get an excellent comparison on the MyWeigh site. I'm really convinced these scales are the best value for the money.
