Please help me recreate this in my kitchen in a smaller scale....

We are putting a wall of cabinets in our kitchen to make a hutch with beverage center. We have restrictions on space (due to the eat-in area) so we will need to use shallow depth cabinets. This is something that our cabinetmaker is doing custom so we could do anything up to a 20 inch depth. We are attempting to include a built in beverage center and I've had some challenges finding a shallow depth refrigerator. A whole other issue ;) My question is if the lower cabinets are 20 inches should the upper cabinets be 10 inches? If they are down to 18 inches would the uppers be 9 inches? I was hoping that someone has experience with shallow depth cabinets they could share. How do you think this inspiration piece would look with lesser depth cabinets?

Comments (24)If you don't want to change windows, I still like the layout I posted earlier. You could do deeper cabinets on either side of the fridge and maybe move the fridge a couple inches closer to the slider. In my last kitchen I had a very small island (39X42) with the fridge directly opposite the stove and the island in between. I never once considered the island a barrier (maybe because the island was small). I usually removed items from the fridge to the sink area. Moving your stove down on the wall would give you a nice prep space and more storage near the stove. I believe you have 5 feet between the edge of your island as I drew it and your dining room table. That should work in your space. Use small tuck under counter stools. If you still think the walkway would be too small, you could do a nice lighted display case facing the dining room. Or just dining room storage. A peninsula could work, but I still like the fridge across the isle. I'm not sure seating works and I moved your stove down a bit to give you more room at the sink. Here is another possible option for microwave cabinet on right of window side. above walls: 30 wide (42" high) below bases: 15 drawer then 2 ( 30 w bases) If this is the only cabinets in the kitchen, I highly suggest going to 42" tall with no crown to get an extra storage : 1 extra shelf per cabinet. Also under lighting really is functional as well. Here is a photo example how 42" white shaker look with no crown. I agree with yvonnecmartin (cookie sheet somewhere is useful) Don't forget fillers on adjacent side walls, they're functional,too. Comments (43)I looked really hard to find any "dents," but couldn't. One commenter's post about frameless v. framed cabinets didn't make sense to me. I have framed, full-overlay cabinets in my kitchen, and frameless in my bathrooms. The 'look' is indistinguishable...yes, I may lose a little space in my kitchen cabinets, but aesthetically, they look the same. I also don't understand frameless being more expensive than framed; I don't recall that when we remodeled (in fact, the opposite was true), though it was 10 years ago. Of course, the OP said that she re-used 50% of her cabinets, which were not full-overlay, but partial over-lay, meaning the frames are visible, so that would certainly have accounted for a lot of her $$$ savings. Comments (65)I must be in a category of one, because I like the plan. I'd started working on this earlier, before I read your last post, but I was sidetracked for most of the day. I'm going to add another idea I had, which won't reduce the sf farther, but will change the way the study is used, just in case you decide to stay with the plan, (and it's OK if you don't--I've enjoyed working on the plans). The idea was to move the stairs over on both levels, to move the entry door farther into the house and add a shower to the powder room. The bathroom door would have to go back to the original location, but the changed entry door would afford privacy, and the study could be used as a guest room, or in case you ever need a bedroom on the first floor, a full bath would be available. That would make the utility room slightly smaller and take up most of the entry closet. It would also change a couple of things upstairs--smaller master, larger BR2 w/wider closet, and slightly smaller laundry room. In this plan I also made the extra cabinets in the kitchen into the bar, and allocated all of the pantry space for food storage, except for MW in an upper cabinet beside the fridge. I like the idea of the side unit if we can't replicate it in the middle of the cabinets as suggested but I love the look of the inspiration picture.
have been able to find some beverage centers that are shallow depth. One that would work is from Perlick that is an 18 inch depth built-in BUT they are $. The one I saw was quoted at $2,800 which is not in my budget for a place to store the kids drinks ;) Houzz has sent me an idea based on my search history I assume but, I'm unsure if it can be enclosed vs freestanding only. This is the Houzz recommended unit...
