How would you update this fireplace?
Comments (25)I like the wall mount idea for the TV to the left of the fireplace and eliminating the armoire. I also like the idea of doing some built ins on each side of the fireplace and possibly mounting the TV in that with a swing arm for easier viewing. I can't go too high with a TV mount as I have neck issues and it's hard to bend my head back to look up to see the TV. There is only 12" from the end of the shutters to the wall. The depth from the wall to the edge of the hearth is 21". The length of the hearth is 6'. Currently the brick to the right extends 41 1/2". The height of the hearth is 15 1/2" and from the top of the hearth to the bottom of the top shelf is 87". Not sure what the depth of normal bookshelves should be. Maybe balance out the left and right sides of the fireplace with the bookcases? If that was done how high should the brick go up the wall? The hearth needs to stay - we use it to sit on quite a bit and the fireplace is gas so don't want the added expense of having to have it lowered to floor level....See MoreHow would you update this corner fireplace?
Comments (4)Build the wall to the ceiling. Cover the black metal fireplace with marble slab. Add a stained wood mantel and solid brass fireplace doors. Drop in a decorative mirror and here's what you can end up with. Of course, there are many variations of this look, but taking the wall to the ceiling will give you an open slate to create a variety of looks. Not sure I would use that particular mirror, but I was in a hurry and it was on my desktop....See MoreHow would you update this blank slate?
Comments (10)I agree with Thalia B above that wood trim is making a comeback but I'm seeing slightly different tones in those inspo pics than the one in OP's pic. (For as much as we can trust screen renderings of colours.) Subtle difference but it can make a difference. I love wood trim as well and when I said I'd lighten or darken this trim, I didn't necessarily mean painting it. Also, @jwencel42, to be clear about the fireplace: it's not that it's meh for me; it's that the view is superlative. :) In this room's design, how can one not privilege the natural view that take one's breath away?! :D This view deserves attention and contemplation and 'bringing the outdoors in' usually makes for harmonious design. A well-designed room is one that makes you feel good living in it so function is key. Focal points can only go so far. :) And usually, once people are in a room, they become the focal point....See MoreHow would you update this family room?
Comments (70)Thank YOU, C Rebekah, for letting us live through your remodel vicariously. I am thrilled with the this amazing transformation. You are creating such a wonderful backdrop for all of the things you will bring into this room to give it your personalities. I would have a hard time choosing the color for behind the shelves, as so many of the colors you’re drawn to would look beautiful. You may want to wait until your furniture and rug are in place to help you decide. Do you have any art that you know you will be using? That might be helpful, too. I’m glad you will be putting in a darker brown floor. I think it is timeless....See MoreJ Mig
