thanx for such a sweet intro, annie--very good of you. and i appreciate the warm well wishes from all of you--i really do! dad was the first foodie i ever knew and i'm sure some of you recall a few of the stories i've told. that never changed.

a couple of months ago he wanted a meatloaf and even at his advanced age, made one. he wasn't satisfied with the results and mentioned that to me more than once. as it so happens, ted lost his job of more than 20 years, the day before his birthday. which just about coincided with a call from my sister sylvia that dad had been hospitalized for what turned out to be worsening kidney problems. the doctors figured they could get things under control and he'd be back in his own place in a day or so. what to do except make a meatloaf and go back to ny for a visit?
we planned to have a little welcome home party in short order and brought a bottle of great western champagne--something that dad liked to have on hand once in awhile for "special events".

the docs and nurses patched him up but decided that a week or two in a rehab facility was in order, to work on strength and mobility. and shortly after that, decided that dialysis was called for. we knew that dad had signed a DNR but were surprised when he refused that treatment too. he knew as well as we did that nothing else could help at that point and that's why i say he did things his way, always with the courage of his convictions. i'm very proud of him and all that he'd accomplished in his lifetime--he was quite remarkable in his own way. but he's been without my mother for quite a few years now and i'm sure if she was right about an afterlife, that he's found his way to her again.

and just in case you were wondering, the last meal that he ate, even if only a bit of it, was that meatloaf i'd brought home and syl stuck in the freezer for another day. and a day or two later, the last drink he had was a glass of that great western that syl had chilled and brought to him at the rehab facility. she'd also brought him a couple of lamb chops that he'd asked for but she never unpacked them as he wasn't up for them. you know it's time when dad turns down a lamb chop. thank you again annie and all--and a toast of my bubbly to mom and dad!

Oh san, I'm just grinning at the thought of meatloaf and Great Western champagne.

I have no doubt that your parents are happily reunited and that both of our fathers are happy knowing the wonderful men we have to spend the rest of our lives with.

And I'll never look at a bottle of Great Western Champagne again without thinking of your father and meatloaf....

San, I've just found my way to the CF late tonight, so my clink will only be a gulp of H2O, but my most sincere condolences on the loss of your papa. It sounds like he had every marble still in place and the meatloaf + the champagne proves he was a foodie until the end! I wish him peace and an everlasting reunion with your mom, and to you and your family, cherish the memories of all the good times.

i sincerely appreciate all your kind words but my sister is the one who really deserves them. she is the one who's been there for the last couple of years, providing whatever help he needed and getting him moved into a good, assisted living facility so we didn't need to wonder and worry...

and i am SURE you are right, annie. dad had an opinion on just about everything (unlike his eldest daughter, of course) but was remarkably close-mouthed about all of his children's spouses and i just don't recall him making any personal comments about them, good bad or otherwise. the last thing he said to me when they were getting ready to transport him from the hospital to the rehab facility when we were in ny a couple weeks ago, was to take good care of ted. and the VERY last thing he said to me in our last conversation this past sunday, was that ted was a jewel. he was right of course but still, it was such a surprise.

last night, we had a dinner in his honor. those "stubby glasses" were there katie--i think they can be seen in the 2nd pic. and of course there was champagne as well as a sam adams, which was something that dad enjoyed sharing with syl's son michael. i made chicken fricassee as he really liked Mom's, as well as some roasted green beans and onions with walnuts and mustard-roasted potatoes. i know he would have enjoyed that. the other picture was one i took of him at michael's wedding this past summer. it was a beautiful wedding and dad was very happy to chat with the other guests, right up until about 11 that night. i'm very glad he didn't miss that! thanx again, guys--and best wishes to all of you, especially lee, laurie, brenda, david and annie (hoping i haven't missed anyone who has been faced with their own challenges recently!).
