TGIF 6-13-08 It's Friday the 13th

I forgot until I turned on the news this morning that it is Friday the thirteenth. Hope nothing unusual happens today. DH took the girls down to my sister today and I will be cleaning and getting ready for us to leave for vacation on Monday. Hayden is staying with my folks and DH the girls and I are going on our first family vacation and are going to the Black Hills area in South Dakota. We are planning on hitting Bear Country USA (Peyton thinks we are taking a baby bear home with us), Mt. Rushmore, Reptile Gardens, and Flintstone village. We hope to spend a day at Custer State park and see some buffalo and other wild life. I went to the Dr. and got the okay to travel, and found out I have a bladder infection, which is what would explain why I feel so carpy.

I need to get some plants in the ground today and hope it rains today and clean the house and pack the clothes for everyone. DH wants us to have the van packed and ready to go on Sunday night so we just have to get up and go. I plan on taking my computer but if I am MIA next week you will know where I am at.

Happy TGIF to you all! I'm toasting you with my large mug of Costa Rican Tarrazu coffee this morning.

It's a good day for me....I took a day off to go over to Greensboro and take a quilting class. Gotta get ready!

Happy tgif....I'm heading to the church to cook for a funeral lunch tomorrow....and we are all praying the levees in des Moines hold...and those farmers who have lost their crop and many many more who have lost their homes and business in Cedar Rapids, Mason City, and many other towns in Iowa.

Hi all! Tikanis, yes, I started back yesterday, and will go until the first week of August. I've got an anatomy class and a psych class this time. The anatomy class is going to be hard, but cool. We're dissecting a bunch of stuff, and then we're traveling to a local medical school to observe an autopsy. (I think I'll bring a bib, and a knife and fork to mess with our prof before we go. Maybe a bottle of hot sauce as well! LOLOL!) The psych class is in an area that is under going renovations, and we don't have AC, and it.is.miserable. And, it was only 83 yesterday. We have a box fan going, but that makes it hard to hear him. I recorded the lecture, but all I can hear is an occassional words or two, and the droning of the fan. Ahh, well. :) Good luck on the survey; I've been worked on one before, and it was sooo stressful. And how cool to be that close to sea lions! Suzanne, gosh,you're got your plate full! I'd love to follow you around for a week, and see SP and the clucking girls! :) Deemarie, the wedding sounds like it was lovely! I'm very glad that things went wonderfully. :) Ivamae, I agree. We do need this forum. I've been here since '98, and I can't imagine not being here and talking to everyone. These ladies truly are my sisters. :) Yeah, where is BJ? Amy? Jen? Besh? Hheellllooo.... Today is an absolutely beautiful day!! Not a cloud in the sky. There is a nice breeze and the temps are in the 60s. Hard to believe that just yesterday, there was water, water and more water everywhere. I ran errands today and saw lots of remnants of the flooding. Gravel and mud on roads, water still laying in low spots, creeks running over their banks, and lots of hillsides with furrows and water still running down them. But we are supposed to have nothing but sunshine for the next 5 days, so hopefully everything will dry up. Our electricity did go out last night for 2 1/2 hours, but I curled up with some candles and some crossword puzzles and passed the time. All I had were scented candles though, and I was burning 3 different scents upstairs and DH was burning a 4th scent downstairs. The combination made a rather unique odor though and I was getting slightly nauseous by the end of the night! LOL QOD - Once. I had just graduated college and was working as a store manager in the mall (I majored in Fashion Merchandising). The district manager and I didn't see eye to eye on something and I mouthed off to her. I was subsequently let go (big surprise - lol), but maintained that it wasn't my fault. Of course, the adult in me now knows that I was completely wrong and had every right to be fired, but my pride wouldn't let me admit that then. I have been doing a program by Prevention Magazine called, Firm Up in 3 Weeks. I have walked 20 out of the last 21 days and either lifted weights or done Pilates 20 of those 21 days. I have eaten sensibly, snacked on healthy foods and even splurged occasionally on "Indulgent Treats", and I can say I never felt deprived or hungry. I slipped into a pair of jeans today without using a shoe horn and I feel great. The program was designed to be done for 3 weeks and then can be modified to fit one's needs or even repeated for another 3 weeks or as long as needed to reach one's goals. I am going to continue the sensible eating (I like having my food choices laid out for me) and will continue to walk 4-5 days a week and do weights and Pilates as often as I can so I can maintain. I loved SSing when I first started, but I just couldn't get back to basics again. I tried over and over again to get back the momentum I had when I first started SSing, but it just wasn't there. With this program, I am eating more carbs, but I am making sure they are whole grain carbs. I am eating nuts, peanut butter, honey and some sugary treats but all in moderation. The book lists hundreds of options for meals, healthy snacks and "indulgent treats" and I can always find something to eat that satisfies me. I tried to stay away from sweets while SSing, and I always ended up eating something "illegal" and going on a binge afterward. Then the whole cycle started over again and each time it was harder and harder for me to get back on the wagon. But I think I have finally found my "groove" with this program from Prevention. Ooops...I started a tgif thread too...GMTA!!! well I will copy and paste here and let the moderators delete my thread. Happy Friday and Happy Graduation to all our forum friends attending graduations and grad parties! Today is supposed to begin a heat wave here in Philly! High 90's for the next few days! YIKES!!! Its so nice out now...just came in for another little cup of joe. I was out admiring the handy work of a few wayward teens. They were bored I guess and they decided it would be so much fun to try to rip down the neighbors railroad tie retaining wall, What they could not rip down they wrote all over with sharpies. I was at work so I did not see anything but I know who it was....there is a bad element here-I suppose most blocks have some sort of problems like this. I think it may be time to take over the block captain job again-the lady who took over for me is not doing a good job-in fact one of her kids is involved with the bad element. On another note...today is Drews last exam. He has short days next week and done on Friday. I will be SO happy to see this year end!! I didn't post too much about it but its been a terrible year for Drew. He just didn't seem to adjust to high school life and my one time honor student is barely passing. Frank and I have been pulling our hair out trying to help him but he is just not motivated. Hopefully after having summer off he'll start 10th grade with a better attitude! Amy and I will hit the gym while he takes his last 2 tests. I am going to try to get my hair cut today too. My "girl" has gone out on early maternity leave so for this cut I may just go to a hair cuttery type place for a trim. Her baby is due in July so I'll have to have another trim befor she returns in Sept-Oct. Tonight I was invited to see my co-worker off to his prom. A co workers prom you ask?? Yes a prom! Theres a young boy who is really a cool kid. Turn out he is Charles BEST friend!! so my co worker is taking Charles sister (my great step neice) to the prom!! Charles does not want to go-more on that later. After that I was invited to a jewelry demonstration. I do not wear a lot of jewelry but I'll go and see...maybe I will get a jump start on holiday shopping?? Tomorrow I have to work early but I also get done early which is good as its the block clean up and I need to be here LOL!! Someone has to talk some sense into these people! LOL!! No really the block needs a good cleaning and we as a community have to work together to make this a safe neighborhood. Tomorrow night Frank and I are going out to dinner...nothing to celebrate really, well maybe celebrate just getting thru the past year LOL!! Sunday is Pocono Race day. The guys get up before the crack of dawn and set up camp on the infield of the Pocono Racetrack and watch the race. I went once and vowed to never go again!! LOL Its LOUD!! However I do help him get ready so he doesn't forget anything. I will no doubt have to work but I will treat myself to something sinful for dinner!! Toolbelt ( neat handle!!) I can't speak for the States but in Canada the homeless are almost always mentally ill or addicts. They resist any type of shelter provided to them. Even temporary shelter when it is bitter cold. They are paranoid and distrustful. Another large segment are runaway children that have left incredibly abusive homes. These kids are a bit easier to get to and persuade to take the help that is available. Many years ago the laws were changed so that no person could be held in any type of facility against their will. The hospitals for the mentally disabled were shut down with little or now support put in it's place. It's truly a tragic situation. Part of me says these people should be sheltered for their own well being and another part says they are entitles to live as they "choose" Anyhow, this is a real twist and turn for TGIF but perhaps a good one in that we all need to open our eyes to the unfortunate circumstances of others,

Linda, I'll be praying with you. Iowa sure has been hit hard. I grew up on a farm and know what those farmers are going through. Glad you are OK!!!

Have fun quilting Teresa!! Stay cool, I know you have had terrible heat.

No major plans here, jusy planning on enjoying my favorite time of year. Working a half day today and tomorrow.

Just horrible the devastation in Iowa. It has really been a rough spring for the mid west.

Sharon you need downtime. Sarah will be fine, with all of us watching over her.

Me? The kids got out of school yesterday so they will be vegging out today, well earned. DH requested salmon for dinner, and I'm leaning towards a carrot or corn pudding/souffle with it.

Sunday we're packing up the kids and the in-laws to go carousing around LA - maybe the Gamble House, Huntington Gardens, you know, Father's Day stuff. We'll end up at my dad's house. His wife puts up a Father's day family get-together with her kids and us. Since we'll be shlepping all day in the hot LA sun, our food contributions will be packed in coolers!

Meanwhile I'll be trying to come up with a caption for this candy. Care to join me?

Oh, Linda, Iowa has sure had it's share of terrible weather! All of those families who have lost so much are in my thoughts and prayers.

Sharon, you deserve a break from the stresses of the past week. Glad you can finally breathe easy and relax a bit. Take care!

As for me, the car is packed and I am heading to my sister's place about 2 hours north. Need more stain for the house and the supplier is up that way, so to save on shipping I am picking it up. Good excuse to hang out with my sis tonight!

Hope the bad weather is over and everyone can finally enjoy a normal summer weekend! I'll be clinking from my lawn chair on the shore this evening!

TGIF, all. After seeing the devastation in Iowa I will stop complaining that it snowed on June 10. Our thoughts are with the flood victims.

I had jury duty yesterday and was excused by 10:30, so I bagged the day, giving me an almost long weekend. I'm at home today...there's a strange bright light in the sky this morning, I think I'll have to go investigate. 70F today...whoo hoo!

Tomorrow is a half day at work, then I will be bartending at our first Relay For Life fundraiser of the season...a Texas Hold 'Em and Bunko Extravaganza (yes, that's how they billed it).

Sunday Dad gets to do what he wants as long as it involves planting the garden. It's been too cold and wet to till and plant...by Sunday things should be dried out. He says as long as it involves margaritas after and a rhubarb cream pie, he'll be happy.

A big ~clink~ to all the Dads this Sunday!

Well...let's see..I've been a busy girl.......today, I went to town, paid $$ for a homegrown 1/2 pig...spent a few hours chatting with my 'baby' brother in my living room...alone...It was nice to catch up and talk. Dropped off some candles I made for a lady who's wanting to share them with others and hope to generate some orders..(I thought I was out of the "selling" business. But they might pay for part of my piggie. So it's not all bad.) Went and picked up my organic produce and coffee beans. Home for a few hours, then off to the ball fields, just got home about 15 minutes ago..

Tomorrow is a double header for the big boy just out of town.

Sunday, yard work and hanging out...Don't know what special things "daddy" will get...Haven't really thought much about it.

Well must be summer cause the puter is acting up AGAIN!!
Seems it goes on the fritz about this time every year...I even took the tower out and placed it in front of the ac unit as suggested by someone here but still no luck.
I will post until the old boy kicks so if I disappear you will all know why!!

Lets see...Drew has been out of school for a few days now. His final grades were not at all stellar but he did manage to pass and be promoted to the 10th grade.
Amy is going back to school next week...not to live but to take a few summer classes...kinda get a jump start on her sophmore year. I know its good for her so I support it. However it will mean no summer vacation for the family.
I am not too bummed tho-means we can put the cash away for our move!!

Everyone please send good thoughts and/or prayers to dear brother on Tuesday. He will go back to the hospital for xrays and mri to determine if he can begin to put weight on his legs. The resident docs at the home say they feel he can but we have to wait to see what his surgeon says.
It will be a wonderful day for him if he can!!
It will also mean he will be able to go home by the end of the week and begin out patient therapy!!

Oh poor IOWA!! What a devistating flood!! My heart breaks for all involved and I hope the situation improves quickly!!

Happy Fathers Day to all the Dads!!

Susie, good thoughts sent to your brother.

Making spaghetti sauce with pork butt in it for hubster's father's day dinner. Also making home made strawberry ice cream with the ice cream maker I got for my birthday.

Me thinks it'd be so much easier to run up to the store and grab a (1.5 quart) half gallon of strawberry ice cream. But I'm mad at Bryers. So I'll make my own. Ba Hum Bug.
