My New Tasting Bowls

Well I just came home from a trip to BB&B and I bought a set of those cute little tasting bowls and the little spoons to go with them. I am a sucker for cuteness! Now my question..I am planning on making one of the soup recipes that comes with them but am thinking won't those little spoons be kind of frustrating to use because they are small? Has anyone had soup with them who can comment? The soup would be a first course/appetizer type of thing I will serve right before dinner.

Here is a picture of the little bowls. They can hold either hot or cold foods and I bought the little spoons to go with them. I was just wondering though about using the little spoons for soup. Usually soup is eaten with a larger spoon and wondered if it might be frustrating to use the little spoons.

Martin, I harvested the garlic you sent me. (Thank you, thank you, thank you!) First the problems. The winter was depressingly dry, and my garden only got watered about once a month. I know that stunts garlic growth, from my past attempts to grow Spanish Roja. Then my darling 4 year old twins helped me in my garden by removing the plant labels, so I'm not sure of several varieties that I grew this year. The garlic in the flower bed out front were all Asian Tempest, so I'm sure of those. My step-dad, who does the cooking in my parents' home, was quite impressed with the bite, and with the size of the heads. Definitely will grow again. Purple Glazer still had its lable somehow. Those heads were about the same size as the Spanish Roja I have grown (small), and we haven't tasted them yet. (?) Giant, (maybe Russian Giant or Siberian Giant) is, well, huge, with large bulbils! Good flavor. Definitely will regrow. Martin's Heirloom, average size heads (remember, drought conditions), large bulbils, haven't tasted yet. Good production! Probably will plant again. Porcelain (?), average size heans, small bulbils, haven't tasted yet. Grocery store shallots, small bulbs, may grow again. Thanks again. I am passing along the Martin's Heirloom and (?) Hi, I just found this site while browsing around GW. I am usually on the Home Decorating forum here at GW. I've already found wonderful ideas just from reading the first page of T2T! As for Large bowls/Platters---if you garden, you can drill a small drainage hole in the bottom, glue a terra cotta plant saucer to an upside down candle holder and then put the bowl with plants on top. I just finished doing this with some Found & GoodWill candle holders. I have some larger mis-matched serving bowls and platters and I've run out of space inside so had to find a way to use them outside. Once painted, I'll place some of the drilled serving bowls on top of the clay saucers and fill them with pretty colored plants. A grouping of pretty mis-matched bowls with plants---just an idea. I haven't gotten around to painting mine yet but here's an example that might help you with your serving bowls. ------------------ These are clay saucers glued to the top of 'pillars' I had stored in the garage rafters. These are the Free and Goodwill candle stands, saucers glued on top.

Ice in new under counter ice maker tastes awful. Help!

It's a U-Line BI1215, which creates crescent shaped traditional (non clear) ice "cubes." It's brand new so I was instructed to toss the first several batches. We are waaayyy beyond the first few batches, four days of batches to be honest. I'd expect the newness to be gone, wouldn't you? I am not using it since it smells and tastes so icky. My best description is a strong plastic-y smell and taste. (I haven't swallowed any, just tasted melted "cubes") It was connected using a braided water line supply kit, hooked to my sink water line. The water is not filtered. I called U-Line and spoke with a person who suggested putting vinegar in the ice tray and then trying the Ice Machine Cleaning packet if the vinegar doesn't work. I tried the vinegar and now the ice is really gross. I will have to wait for the cleaner to arrive. Until then, has anyone else had a similar problem? What was the cause? And the solution? Even though my sink water tastes ok, would filtering the water help? Thank goodness my fridge icemaker still works. It's a typical blisteringly hot summer here. Thanks for reading and responding!

I worry that b/c of everything else going on between the two rooms it will be busy. They're not overly big expanses, really, especially being split as they are between the two spaces...and I really do like it. Part of it, I think, is b/c I've always disliked swirly counters, so I'm confused why I like this, so then I second guess myself. At some point the cabinets will all be the same color..but we'll have the brown of the floor, the brown of the trim around the inside of the doorways/windows, white trim around doorways/windows/floor, light blue cabinets, plus my husband wants to build a very large table for the dining area, and he wants to build it, I believe, out of like butcher block and cedar. I can't remember exactly, but it seems like..over the top. I think I need to find out exactly what he plans to do w/the table. I worry the whole thing altogether will be a LOT and I'll need to tone things down w/a lot of white to balance it out. Not sure if that makes sense. What I dislike about the laminate is the exact opposite thing everyone warned me about w/the white--I detest putting something on the counter and hearing the crunch of crumbs. Or putting my hand on it and feeling crumbs. Seeing spills. The things that "blend in" so I set things down and didn't see the water or whatever and now my papers are wet. I'd thought maybe if it were white there would be no excuses. (tho in reality it's probably wishful thinking) The laminate we got from a countertop place that I believe only does laminate, We installed it, and it was pretty inexpensive. I'm not sure what it costs elsewhere, but 11' was less than $300, so I don't think that was too bad. If I did something different, I wouldn't feel horrible about replacing it, but I wouldn't do it right away.

Depends what kind of soup. One with big chunks or long noodles wouldn't work very well, but more like a cream soup, or one with small pieces would be fine. We have a grocery store nearby that gives samples of soups in little cups with little spoons & it works fine. Howver a big bowl with a little spoon would be exhausting :).

Islay-Carbel..all those pictures are so cute...I liked the glass ones too but just decided on these for hot soup.

Elba--I am thinking of making a cream of tomato soup that they have a recipe for in the cookbook I bought to go with the bowls...I am making a roasted chicken, stuffing and asparagus for the meal itself and thought the tomato soup would be a nice touch of taste and color before the meal. Thanks for your input.

Joann, That's going to be so nice. Here's another recipe to consider:

Roasted Red Pepper Bisque
Ã¢ÂÂ¢ 1 jar TJÃ¢ÂÂs Roasted Red Pepper and Eggplant Dip (or mild Ajvar)
Ã¢ÂÂ¢ 1/2 onion, finely chopped
Ã¢ÂÂ¢ 2 tablespoons butter
Ã¢ÂÂ¢ 2 sprigs fresh rosemary
Ã¢ÂÂ¢ 3 cups chicken or vegetable stock
Ã¢ÂÂ¢ 3 tablespoons tomato paste
Ã¢ÂÂ¢ ÃÂ½ to ÃÂ¾ cup heavy cream (or use fat free half and half)
Ã¢ÂÂ¢ Salt to taste
1. Melt the butter in a deep saucepan. Add the onion and rosemary and cook for 5 minutes. Discard the rosemary.
2. Add the peppers and stock to pan and bring to a boil. Lower heat and simmer for 15 minutes. Stir in the tomato paste. Use stick blender to purÃÂ©e soup.
3. Stir in 1/2 cup of the cream and season with salt.

Mustangs..that sounds delish too..how big a jar is the dip because there is no TJ's around and I would need to know the amount if I sub a dip that's available in my supermarket.

Joann, I don't have a TJ's either! TJ's and a brand I get locally (Marco Polo) are both 12 oz. jars.
